First trip Over the New Road to Worthington.'^
Completian of the Extension to its Terminus.
From Saturday's Daily.
On Ti.ursday the last rail was laid, and the last spike driven in the extension of the Terre Haute & Southeastern RoaJ, completing the road to Wortliington. Yesterday 'morning the first through train was run. On it were the officers of the road, consisting of W. B. Tuell, President John S. Beach, Treasurer Wra. M. Tuell, Auditor B. V. Marshall, Secretary George A'herton, Superintendent. Besides these gentlemen were Herman Hulman,
Board
The ride was made in good time., and the road bed was found in excellent condition. The newly completed portion was especially worthy cf attention, being unusually smooth for a track which has not yet been thoroughly ballasted. Especially noteworthy was the substantial nature of the improvements. It has evidently been built to last, and last it will, for
56-pound
iron, heavy oak ti. and a
road bed which uses the old tow-path of the canal for many miles, is as inperishable as a railroad can well be made. The distances between Terre Haute and Worthington can be seen by a glance at the following
TABLE OF DISTANCES
The fourteen miles that have just been completed are those from Clay City to Worthington.
At Worthington quite number of people welcomed the arrival of the train, which was looked upon aa a memorable event in the history of the place. After an. excellent dinner at the Osborne House, kept bv Kib Osborne, who looks the jolly landlord that he is, and who has a reputation as a host among all who have ever been at Worthington, the visitors scattered about the train.
Worthington is one of the best of the smal'er towns about Terre Haute. It is situated on the Indianapolis and Vincennes road, as well as being the terminus of the T. H. S. E. It does a good lccal trade, and is of growing importance
A noticeable feature of the road we are speaking of is the way in which such an institution develops thexountry. The H. & S. E. runs through ^country splendidly timbered and rich agriculturally. But the greatest of its attractions is the quantity and quality of its coal, the road running tor several miles through a magnificent field of block coal. The road has and is developing everything. Grain and hogs and lumber and slaves are shipped over it in large quantities, and each year shows an increase. But the most important feature of its trade relates to the block coal. It is easy to predict that its traffic in this single item will be immense, and that, too, in the near future. With the terminal facilities at this place, this road ought to furnish a large portion of the block coal for tlvj market at Chicago, which constantly increases its demands. And with the connection at Worthington with the I.

the Indianapolis market is accessible. In view of the fact -that the Ohio never is so uncertain, and that Cincinnati and Louisville must dqpend upon ihe Indiana block coal fields for their supply When they run short, and traffic on this road in supplying them, must become a large and paying business.
As to the road itself, its fixture, and a good paying one too, is assured. But while it prospers as it must, the region traversed by it will toe greatly benefited To Terre Haute merchants. The road is exceedingly valuable, opening up to them as it does the trade of a country which i6 naturally tributary to our city. And to the people along the line it is also of immeasurable advantage by reason of its furnishing a good and convenient market for their products.
In this way the railroad over which the initial trip was made yesterday, will become one of the mo6t important factors for the future in the business problems of of all this region. The GAZETTE congratulates Mi. Twell on the foresight dis Dlaved by him in securing a property -which must become increasing valuable each and every year.
THE COUNTY BRIDGES. From Saturday's Daily. The County Commissioners are doing good work at present by having the county bridges repaired, some of them needing it very badly. The bridge over Little Lost Creek, five miles east of this city has just been Rebuilt and is now in a fine condition. The bridge at Creal's Mill, ten miles northeast, on the line between Otter Creek and Nevins township is now undergoing repairing. Trustee Robertson, of Fayette township is at present building a bridge ever Big Coal Creek, on the road to Clinton. The Commissioners in company with a Pittsburg gentleman will probably go down this afternoon to again view the Prairieton bridge and ascertain tbe cost of having it rebuilt. ,' ,'u

WHAT THEY no
There is an immense amount
of work
connected with the delivery and collection cf mail in this city. It makes a person timid ju6t to calculate the amount of walking a carrier must do. Take Frank Mill's route for instance. He delivers to Keye* and Sykes, at the hospital, and at John Rupp's house, beside going to Nineteenth street on Main. His is not an exception to the rest. All the carriers have extreme outskirt mail to deliver, and some of the people who live furthest away take a daily paper which they want delivered in this way. The report of the superintendent of carriers up to the 15th inst. is as follows:
MAIL DELIVERED.

Totals.... 17 2141 S845 3233
It will probably be noticed at once that many more letters and postal cards are delivered than collectted from the boxes, leading an outsider to believe that a great many Terre Hauteans were remiss in -attending to their correspondents. Apparently already in this month about twelve thousand more letters have been delivered than collected from the boxes. The reason of this is that A great many peoyle mail their lettere themselves at the postoffice, instead of placing them in the carrier's boxes. Of course the figures above given are confined exclusively to mail matter handled by carries and nothing else counts. 'J
THE T. H. & W. R'Y. tfrom Friday's Daily. 45. a# President Wm.B.Tuell.the directors and officers of the road and a few other gentlemen went down over the Terre Haute & Worthington road this morning. They will return on the train this afternoon. The spacefbetween Clay City, the former terminus of the road, and Worthington has been spanned, and trains are now running regularly between Terre Haute and Worthington. In its present condition, and with its connections at Worthington, the road is a very valuable feeder to the trade of Terre Haute, and opening up. as it doe6, a territory which is ntaurally tributary to our Prairie City, and which has only needed proper railroad facilities to-anake this place its market and depot of supplies.
