On last Saturday the Courier re-vam-ped its stale charge that the Gazbttb purposely set its Sheriff advertisement in brevier type (which is the same size as the reading matter of the paper) instead of smaller nonpareil type, in order to make them "pad out" or measure more to the greater cost of the unfortunate defendant who was being sold out. There is an astonishing amount of cheek. for the Courier, whose unpaid printers and unhappy creditors crowd every corner watching the proprietor .squander his money, to attack anybody for anyhing. But in this instance cheek is dis* tanced by colossal mendacity. As business manager of the Gazette! am interested in these attacks and in exposing their falsity to the few persons who have seen therh, and the still fewer who have given any credence! It will be short work. The Gazette haa always felt that any space devoted to unveiling the obscurity of the Courier, was worse than wasted.

The appended statements are from two printers, who have had charge of setting advertisement#-' They explain ^hemselves':

About half-past five o'clock this morning as Wm. Hicks, colored man, in the employ of the northern rolling mill, was coming down the Vandalia track, on his way to wcrk, he was 6tartled on nearing Robinson's drug store, on the corner of Fourth street and the Vandalia railroad, by hearing a scarcely (audible groan, as if coming from a man lying near the railroad track. He looked forward and saw a colored man lying on the north side of the way. He inquired of the man what his name was, and received a weak answer of "Augustus Jones," 'and lighting a match he was horrified at the discovery that one of the man's legs was completely cut off, and only hanging:, by a slight piece of flesh. He held the lighted match up to the man's face and recognized him as Augustus Jones who worked with him at the rolling mill. He asked the groaning man how it happened but the man was to weak to answer. Mr. Robinson, the druggist, was aroused from bed- and Dr. Laug head summoned The man was carriec into the drug store, and Drs. Link and Laughead decided that tile man was U?o far gone to operate on. He was carried to his boarding house on Third street nearly opposite the rolling mill, and at 8 o'clock this' morning, after severe suffering, the unfortunate man breathed his last. The facts about the unfortunate accident are as follows: It Seems that Jones and his cousin, John Jones, had befen to Brazil, and were returning home this morning on the Van-j dalia night express, whidh is due here at about 2 o'clock. John Jones jumped off at Sixth street and wished his cousin to do the same, but he persisted in jumping off at Third street. The night express goes at a pretty good rate of speedy and Jones jumped #ff at a place where there is a slight embankment, thinking the grouncj was level. Jumping upon this embanjkihtent, as he did, he slid down and undqt the iron wheels. Jone« was about twen-i ty^eight years of age and has a wife Jarink at Cdal Creek, in Fountain county.
