DLMOCRACY.
The State Convention at Baltimore Pass some Ringing Resolutions.
The Convention at Cincinnati, Nominations, &e.
Baltimore, August *].— The Detnocfa»ic ttate convention nominated Wm, T. Hamilton, of Wathington county, for governor C.J. M.Gwyn.for attorney general, and Thos. J. Keating, for comptroller Spencer Jones, Montgomery, for clerk of the court of appeals.
THE RESOLUTIONS.
The following are among the resolutions adopted: The obligations.and credit of the'United States and of Maryland cught to be sacredly maintained neither federal or state debt cught to be increased, hut provision ought to be made, as soon as practicable, for funding the debt6ofeach at a lower rate of interest, and for the gradual payment of such debts while they continue to exist: every proper means of legislation bhould be adopted which may be necessary to give effect to these public obligations, and to •cofirm confidence in their complete securty. When the Democratic-Con-servative party regained power in the •Congress of the United Statss, it enforced an economical administration of public affairs, and made the Resumption of specie payment a possible, events it will be its* duty to maintain the advantage thus gained by firmly establishing the credit of the country upon a bahis of •coin exchangeable in all the markets of .the world.
The Democratic-Conservative party -of the country was deprived, by fraud, •of the fruits of its victory in the presidential contcst of
1879.
The reprobation oi
history will fall upon those who committed the crime against the whole people. It is the duty that people, acting in their respective states, to protect themselves and their posterity against a recurrence of the offense, by enacting laws which will afford no future opportunity for Such fraudulent practices.
The Democratic-Conservative party of this state, faithful to the constitution of »he United States, rests
it6
construc
tion of that instrument upon the express words of the
10th
in
1791:
amendment, adopted
"The power not delegated to
the Uuited States by the constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states, respectively or to the people." The Republican party, in its conduct of national affairs, has violated this fundamental article. It has provided, by law for federal interference in state elections it has assumed the right to conter on iederal courts, supervisors, marshals and special deputy marshals, the constitutional power of enforcing the ttate laws it has deliberately sanctioned the unconstitutional use of troops of the United Stales at the polls in the several states. These are measures of centralization which show a determined purpose to change the organic character of the government bequeathed to us by our fathers, and tuch measures ought to be resUted bv tvery constitutional means within our power.
We return our hearty [thanks to the members of the Democratic-Conserva-tive party in Congreef, fcrjtheir endeavors to secure impartail trails by jury in federal courts, by the abolition of the test oaths, and for the manly steadfastness with which they resisttd Republicans encroachments upon the limitations imposed by the coi.dilution of the United States.
The Democratic-Conservative party of Maryland, having no other purpose to fulfil except to tecure the good government of this Hate, and to aid in the reform of the administration of federal affairs, expect all citizens of this state, who share its opinions, to unite cordially with it in tl.e attainment of these great oljects. lie resolutions alro call for reduced state taxation abolition, also, of unnec etsa-v. ofti:ers, reduction of salaries and fees, free and pure chctioi.s, and registration laws.

LORD* BYRON'S WIFE AND sister. 1
LETTERS THAT SEEM TO EXPLODE MRS.
J"| STdWE'S
fCANDAL.
4
From the London News, July iS. The new number of the Academy contains a series of very interesting and valuable letters from the late Lady Byron to Mrs. Leigh, her husband's sister. They form part of the papers of Mrs. Leigh which have lately been purchased for the British Museum, and have been communicated to the Academy by Mr. E. Maunde Thompson. The letters were written at various periods, beginning on January
16, 1816,
mother's death. All these letters testify to the constant esteem and affection which Lady Byron entertained toward her sister-in-law. The expressions of affection they contain entirely discountenance the idea that the charges brought against Mrs. Leigh after Lady Byron's death, and said to rest on her direct personal testimony, had anv foundation in fact. Writing only ten days after she had left her husband, Lady Byron addresses Mrs. Leigh as
uMy
to have taken place between ibein at Reigate in the presence of the late Rev. Frederick Robertson, but it did not happen, and some months later, when Mr*. Leigh was in her last illness, Lady Bryon wiote to her daughter: Whisper to her for me the words, 'dearest Augusta.' I can't think they would hurt her and added a postscript that she was at Esther till Wednesday, and if was she wanted they were not to hesitate to send for her. The whole of this interesting correspondence, which throws new light on the relations of Lady Byron to her sister-in-law in the years after the separation from her husband, is entirely inconsistent with the theory Mrs. Stowe has promulgated as the cause of that separation. Every reader of the letters will agree with Mr. Thompson that if the words had any meaning "they dispose of the whole calumny and banish it into the regions of after thought."

Independently of malday, I do not think of the past with any spirit of resentment, and scarcely with the sense of injury. God bless him.'' There was at a later ceaiod a serious dispute between Lady Byron and her sister-in-law but it arose on the appointment of a trustee under Lady Byron's settlement. Lady By ion appointed Dr. Lushington, to whom Mrh. Leigh objected. The rupture of their intimacy of twenty years clearly arose out of this quarrel. In
