The Maine Republicans Meet and Resolution.

OHIO DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE. Columbus, O., June 26.—The Democratic state central committee and candidates jnet here today, for consultation The central committee organized by electing John G. Thompson chairman.
GENERAL EWING
was serenaded to-night, in response to loud calls, Ewirg appeared, and afler an enthusiastic reception, made a speech. After returning thanks for the reception, Ewing referred to the Democratic plat form, saying it needed HO interpreter, and no man in the party had the right, when speaking in its name, to add a word or subtract a word from that platform. He says: It may go too far on the money question to sui» seme Democrats it may fall short ci the views of others, but it is a liberal exposition of the issues of this campa:gn,on which the Ohio Democrats have chosen to ask the endorsement »l the people. Further along Ewin'g baid: The fitht this year is tor the position in the grea'- battle of 1S80. The forccs 011 each side are 60 evenly balanced that which ever party secures Ohio has a po.nt of advantage which will probably turn the tide of battle in i»s favor. I f-hatl enter on the canvas fully realizing the popularity, ability and capacity for organization of the distinguished gentleman who heads the Republican ticket, and the mighty power, wealth, privilege, patronage and plunder which will be arrayed against us but confident of the triumph" of constitutional government and popular right*, I shall obey the voice which called me to the front, and aided by others more able than myself, will submit our causc to the considerate judgment of the people.
In referring to federal interference in elections, Ewing said: The Republican party has .further fortified itself by usurping federal control over elections, which heretofore has never been asserted since the foundation of our government, and that our fathers never knew or heard oT. The phrase "national elections" which Mr. Hayes and Mr. Foster so glibly upe, and this'attempt of the Republican par ty to coerce and control state officers when conducting state elections, by the u6e of the federal army and rw»rms of hiding spies and marshals, is ft flagrant, monstrouis and intolerant usurpation. While tpeaking on this subject he said: Fellow citizeus, this assumption of pow. er, if recognized and established, tends, and will, 1 believe, lead to the utter destruction of the beneficent system of ernment established by our fathifrs der that system, formulated under the constitution, all powers of tne federal government ar« strictly defined and limited, while states and people, reserving to themscives all powers not delegated to the federal government, are sovereign in a far wider "sphere than is the general government. 1 epeak in no spirit of partisanship, but in the candor of conviction, when I say that the obliteration of the reserved rights of the state and people, and the absorption in the general govcrement of all, regardlea6 of the constitution, has become the controlling ten dency, if nat the final aim, of the Republican party. These policies of the Republican partv, by which they are impoverishing the masses and absorbing unlimited power in the general government, are only steps toward the ultimate subversion of our popular liberty, and the establishment of the rule of a money aristocracy. Never in the history of our government, have principles and methods opposed to true democracy been 60*'boldly and powerfully maintained as by the Republican party in the past twelve years. Its long and firm hold of rapidly expanding power, and the enormous growth of conconlrated wealth have developed and ripened forces inimical to popular government, until now, having reduced the laboring masses almost to pauperism, having stripped the middle classed of a large bhare of their wealth, having learned how to exact enormous tribute from the corporations it has enriched by unjust legislation, it seeks by corrupt'or: to bribe and by torce to overawe elections, and to perpetuate it* power in utter contempt of the constitution and of the free and uabcught suffrages of the people.
trovUn-
General Rice made a short speech, declaring that Foster"? recent speech was not in accordarce with the ideas enun ciated by his report on Louisiana affairs, and the speeches 011 the electoral bill. He predicted a brilliant triumph for the Democracy this fall Several other speeches were made.
FORMAL OPENING.
Co'umbus, June 27.—The Democratic State committee have decided to formally open the campaign early in August, with speeches by Pendleton, Thurman, Ewing Steedman and others.
MAINE REPUBLICANS.
Bangor, June 26.—The Republican state convention met to-day, J. *A. Pike chairman. The various committees were appointed, and the convention took re cess.
Upon reassembling, Col. J. W. Spald ing, from the committee on resolutions reported as follows
THE RESOLUTIONS.
The Republican party of Maine present to the people cf the state the following statements of its aims and principles:
It believes that this country is a nation and not a confederacy of states, and that the national government is supremeon all subjects lodged with it by the constitution. It recognizes as one ot these subjects the right and duty of the national government to protect the citizen in the exercise of all his constitution al and legal rights, none of which an more important than a free and fai ballot, uninfluenced by fraud or violence believes that the existing laws for the
pi otection of American citizens should not be repealed, and it condemns as revolutionary the attempts of the Democratic party in Congress to force the Executive to const nt to such .rppeal by the threat of reftwal of appropriations necessary for the existence of the government' It appreciates the noble and patriotic position taken by President Hayes and the Republican members of both houses of Congress in sustaining wise and just laws against the treasonable and revolutionary course of the Democratic party in Congress, and hereby pledges them its hearty support in their efforts to uphold the financial credit of the government, and to inst upon free elections and the right of the United States to enforce its own laws. It protests against the reopening by the Democratic^leaders of the exciting and sectional issues which had been settled by the victory of the national arms over the rebellion, and calls upon loyal men every where to sustain by their votes the fruits of that vistory.
It believes now, as always, in good, honest money for the people, and it opposes an irredeemable paper currency as the worst curse that can be inflicted upon a nation. It rejoices that the government's promises to pay are now kept, and that the paper currency of the country is redeemable on demand in coin, so that now the dollar of the laborer i6 a»good as the dollar of the capitalist. It condemns all schemes to temper witfc the currency ©f the people, and thereby again unsettle public confidence, now happily fast being restored.
It recognizes temperaace as a vi7tue which has conferred the greatest benefit on the state, and it sustains the principle of prohibition, which, in Us operations, has so largely suppressed liquor selling and added in«alculably to virtue and prosperity among the people.
It believes that every interest of the state and its people require a thorough and impartial enforcement of laws, it believes that state affairs should be conduated economically and prudently, and that the expenses of administration should be kept as low as consistent with the efficient operation of ite several departments.
The resolutions were unanimously adopted. Senator Blaine was then l»udly called for and appeared amid cheers, and addrewotd the sonvention.
On the third ballot Hoa. D. F. Davis, of Corinth, was nominated, reoeiviug 849 votes.
The nomination of Davia was made unanirrous, amid ^reat applause. The uominee accepted in a brief speech, and the convention adjourned.
