1 .'oye the merry, merry Freshman— He is ajoyoua thing, Though worried sore by the Sophomore

At each succeeding spring. A many spurns the patient Fresh Doth of the oppressor take, They cannot tire his spirit proud

Nor his keen courage break.

For

he himself will be a Soph Sure as doth tadpole turn To frog, and 'gainst the Fiesh unborn

His righteous wrath shall burn. Whene'er ho seeth that Fresh appear A-cuttlng of it fat Alwith a supsrcillious cane

And a contumacious hat, Then ho will to his fellows call And shrill the battle-cry, And(1o unto that freshman as

When Fre6h he was done by.

III.

It was a hapless Freahman The Sophs had worried long, And who had learned in suffering

What I shall teach in song. His spirit proud it had been cowed Beneath their bitter ycke Till he was never known to smile

And very rarely spoke. He was not seen in Pi Delta's halls, Nor at the dazzling scene When, silly moths, the students swarmed

Round Emily Soldone. Soon as the day's task had bten done He to his room would creep And toll at some mysterious task

While all were wrapped in sleep. The curious student that did at The keyhole air his ear, A elank as that of hammer on

Some metal used to hear, Anon me rasping of a file, 8i that though nought was seen. The Impression got abroad tho Fresh

Was making some machine. And daily when that Fresh came home Were seen to buljre his pockets With turn-cocks, screws and safety-valves

And rods, and balls and sockets. And he read tho workB of Vaucansson AndBmith and Maskelyne But locked his secret In bia breast-

He liyed and made no sign. But sometimes to a brother Fresh He'd breathe mysterious things Of Moses, and the Servile War,

And overthrows of Kings, And Jacqueries, and wonders wreught To tribes in bondage sunk Till his companion thought that be

Was either mad or drunk. But he was neither drunk nor mad— I' faith he would not Jest The haughtiest Soph if he should know

What is in that Freshman's breast, And when he draws the rasping fllo Or the clanking hammer swings, A wild, fierce light Is in his eye

Am1 over ho hoarsely sings: "Beware, beware, of the Fiend Freshman Thr.t sitteth on yon gray stane Wearing an altitudlnoue hat

And carry lug a cane I"

It was nine haughty Sophomore*'1 Were quailing the welss weiss beer All at the dusking of the day

In the spring-time of the year. From the lattice of tho window The eldest cast his pyes, And he rubbed them hard and looked again

And shouted in surprise "Is't aFresh I see before me, All with a hat and oane, Or aFresh of the mind, proceeding

From a beer-oppressed brain— Down in yon quiet corner, u--Sittingen yon gray stane?" Then up and spoke tue eight other Sophs: 'Tis but an idle dream As sings the poet Longfellow

Things are not what they seep. What Freshman would come here to dare. No matter how insane, The contumacious hat to woar,

To boar the fatal cane?" Fritn the l+ttlce of tho window They looked out and cried: "It is— And ho huth a cigar to boot,

Let's go up and d3 his biz." A Thepeo, the haughty Sophomores, And above, on drooping wings,

Forth sailed those bold Sophomores, And rau adown tho lane, And they were aware of a Freshman there

That sat on a gray stane. In the gathering gloom his features I Could never a one descry, But he had a cane a fathom long, rl

And a hat ten Inches high. Calmly he sat in a corner And from his cigar each Soph Could see the abundant vapor

In measured clouds pass off. His breathing tfas asthmatic vs They asked him one by one "Why comest thou here with hat and cane?"

But answer made he none. And those bold Sophs wont nigh to where He sat on the cold gray stane And smote upon his lofty hat 7

And grasped his daring cane. "t

There cameol wheels a whirringfe? And tho hindmost Soph with awe Two kicks and knock-down blows at once

Given by tho Freshman saw. Out Bhot again his fists and leet Like rod of driving wheel And the fifth—eighth Sophomores went down

Ere they could turn on heel* And the Freshman towered above them And fell with an awful crash And with arms and leg) his -prostrate foes yy Relentlessly did smash!

Where manzanltas bloom.

Upon the dark, stern hillside Their clouds of sweetness rest, iiikc a rosy infant smiling

Upen a warrior's breast.

O rare, brave manzanltas I Beneath therdark fir tree, Like palest rose of Subset,

Your dainty blush I see.

The wild bees know your coming— They seek you from afar: With musical sweet humming

The wild bird in your branches His morning hymn has trilled Yours were the swinging censers

With holiest incense filled. How softly falls the sunshine 1 Tho blus sky smiles above, Tho great oaks spread their branches

In fond, protecting love

The yoHng ferns wave their greeting From greenest mossy dells, And all its murmured secrets

The babbling brooklet teits.

A STRANGE DBVICE.

Tho morn was very bright and clear, When on Broadway there did appear A youth in suit of checkered gray, Well suited to an April day. ('Twas April, though she just had burst Away from March—in fact tho first.) And on his hands—hued like the dovesHe wore a pair of brand-new gloves And around his neck a bluo cravat, And on his curls a tall, silk hat, And in his button-hole there hung A bunch cf violets, sweet and young. But ah! alas! alack! alack! Upon a card pinned to his back, In letters large and most precise, Appeared this very strange device— "Please kick me!"

As on he went rose laughter gay, How jolly people ft el to-day, And I a pleasant sight must be, For all who pass look back at me," He thought. And then his cane ho swun g, And softly to himself he sung: "Tra-la-tra-la, 'tis well, 'tis well, To be a handsome Broadway swell." And little recced ho the unkind Request some friend had pinned behind In capitals. Oh! yes, indeed, So huge that all who walked might read, (How eft in lifo we journey thus, No vexing thought accompanying us With smiling front and In the rear Some mischief clinging close and near.) "Please kick me!"

"Two friends meet in a newspaper office. "What are you going to do Jack? "Put in Aii advertisement denouncing Jones as a liar and a fraud. It's expensive' but I want the world to knowslji|3true character." "Where do you live?" J* "In a boarding house.'' "And want to waste money in that waj Spendthrift!' "I don't quite grapple the idea. "Go home to-night and tell about Jones at the dinner t-ible. In a week it will be known in Denver. And now, having saved you the money' come and some assommoir."

It's.a noble sport, but as you say, a little off with us needs something" "Yes—some' leven."

"I say, garcoo." Yes. sah!" "Oh, you are a bric:a-brac garcon' but it's all the same. What did I order?' •'Strawberry short cake.

Well, bring me somej this is short strawberry cake. Don't eat those cucumbers." "Why not?,' "Science says they are the transient hotel of the tape Worm." "Then that accounts for the cucumbersome stvle of that cheerful invention."

"One dollar for spring lamb .with mint sauce!" "Yes sir."

INTERNATIONAL COPYRIGHT

LETTER FROM A LONDON PUBLISHER ON THE PROPOSED CONFERENCE. From the New Yotk Tribune.

The following letter, addressed to Messrs. Harper & Brothers by F. R. Daldy, esq., a well-known London publisher and member of the Royal Commission on Copyright, will be read with interest. It shows that the suggestion of an International Copyright Conference is viewed with favor in England, and evinces a disposition among English publishers to ooperate cordially in the scheme with their American contemporaries:

Brevoort House, N. Y., May to, '79. Messrs. Harper & Brothers: DEAR SIRS—On my arrival in this country I was glad to learn from your letter thai you thought the time had arrived for the further consideration of the international branch of the copyright question, and to notice the courteous and practical character of your suggestions. I can assure you from long personal experience, and as honorary secretary of the British Copyright Association, that I believe there is a sincere desire in England to see this question satisfactorily settled. To further this end, an International Commission to consider the question thoroughly, taking note of the public and private interests of both nations, would, 1 think, be very useful, for no step promotes practical results more than a personal interchange of opinion and information.

I should think the decisions of such a commission would have great weight in both countries. Its appointment was also suggested by some witnesses before the British Royal Commission on Copyright, and, as you will see by the report of the Commissioners, they so far indicated their approval of it as to bring it specifically before her Majesty's Government (see Report, paragraph 252),and to express their unanimous opinion that the appointment of 6uch a commission might be attended with advantage.

Should such a commission be formed, I hope it will have large enough powers to enable it to entertain the question of stage right and fine art copyright as well as literary copyright in fact to treat of copyright in its widest sense, as embracing the right to copy, print, engrave, photograph, or in anpr way to multiply copies, dramatize, abridge, translate, represent, perform or deliver. I hope also it will be authorized to frame its report in 6uch a shape that it could form the basis, a6 you say, of an international copyright treaty.

Such a climax would be most cordially welcomed in England, an-1 I have no doubt it won Id be received generally with equal favor here. The British Government have already given evidence by appointing a Royal Commission, of their wish to put copyright on a sound and satisfactory footing, and I think they will be much gratified by any assistance proffered by the American Government which will enable them to deal completely with the international branch of it. Believe me, yours very truly,

F. R. DALDY.
