3BE TKREUS HAUTE WEEKLY GAZETTSL
STEPHEN R. SMITHJ
He Practices in What the Ledger-Stand-ard Calls a New Roie, Bnt What Thi tiaz«tte Knows to be an old Game With Him*
The following notice i6 clipped from the LaFayette Journal, which in turn was partly taken from ths New Albany Ledger-Standard. When The GAZETTE showed up Stephen as a man unfit, either from indecency, insanity, or lack of sense and power to control, to have charge of children it was not assisted by any other paper in town and some people affected to believe that he was a much abused man. Cards were written in his defense and the temperance people while they didn't uphold him failed to cast him off abruptly as they did in Evansville and a3 he deserved here.
We trust the sequel proves the GAZETTE'S position to have been rigkt. Here is the the article. It is headed
IN TROUBLE.
Stephen R. Smith, the man who organized a childrens' temperance society in this city, has got in trouble ngain. This time it is at New Albany. The Ledger-Standard says:
Yesterdav Stephen R. Smith figured in a new role. Several of the little giri6 that are members of the Percy Band made complaint to their parents that he handled them indecently, taking such liberties with their persons as were vulgar and outrageous. Smith was preparing the children for a concert or exhibition to be given on Friday at the Opera House, and had a number of little boys and girls call at his room at the Central Hotel, to recite and practice their pieces. The little girls say that while in his room he took the indecent advantages of them complained of.
The Lafayette Journal adds: Smith was taken befcre a Justice-of-the-Peace and pleaded guilty to the charge of assault and battery, and was fined and costed to the tune of seventeen dollars. If the charges are true Smith should spend the remainder of his days in prison, and when he dies should go down to his grave without the benefit of a Hope. The scoundrel who would under the guise of moral reform be guilty of an act like the one mentioned, is not fit to be at large.
