THE fair of St, Benedict's church netted nearly eleven hundred dollars instead of one thousand as previously stated. The object of the fair was to make the St. Benedict's school free to those who now attend or may attend. Heretofore it has been difficult for some parents to pay the tuition fee necessary to "keep the school going, and it was therefore, concluded that it would be best to have a fair, at which a sum could be raised at once which would placc the school on a sound footing, and make tuition free. The result has been more successful than ever hoped by the pastor. He now has enough money on hand to defray the expense of the school for a jpear without further trouble. There are one hundred and twenty-five pupils in the school, and it will now, course, rapidly grow.

In a hhop window in ferfc Ilaute is a picture of a monkey which lias caught a profane panot and pulled all his feathers out Poll's master coming in and asking, "What is the matter Poll?" receives the reply. "Oh we've had a h—1 of a time." Poll's remark very nptlv applies to the last jart of our voyage to Svdney which was concluded yesterday. We made a verv quiet ri:n to Auckland, New Ze land, but the sea was rough for two weeks and nearly all the passengers were afQicttd with "Maladie de Mer" a polite natnt lor the sickest of all sick sicknesses, sea sickness.
We laid at Auckland siv hours, a pleasant city nearly as large as Terre Haute, but not near fo pretty. Atter leaving Auckland we struck the equi noxial storm, ana for three to four days we labored, and tcs-ied in a sea running mountains high, and a gale blowing at 70 to 200 miles an hour. The seas washed clear over the hurricane deck and over the top of the smoke stack, filling the cabin and stalerooms with water. In my cabin the water was two. inches deep. The ship was light, as we had discharged much freight at Honolulu and Auckland, and she rolled likt- a bo«-P- While at the dinner table, a hi :vv *ca came, rolled all the siittrs over, the heavy table, which was screwed down to the floor, was torn loose and turned upside down, dishes all smashed, and a deluge of wate.' crashing through a broken skylight drenched everyone, and left in all floating like crabs in a wash-tub. The ladies were nervy, no screaming or yelling, considerable hysterical laughter, and a general impression that if the storm did not soon abate the ship would swamp.
The men prayed very little, "cussed" a good deal, and discussed the fact that it the machinery br«ke down, we should be visiting the mermaids very soon. Fortunately, the officers were capable, the 6hip, staunch and new, the machinery sound and managed by a sober and capable head engineer and reliable assistants. We rode" into Sydney, mui:» relieved and no one seriously hurt, though many annoying accidents occut rei« resulting in cuts bruises, scratches, etc.
Sydney is a beautiful plattr. The harbor is probably the best in the world, suielv the prettiest. The hotels are abominable. They have no general parlor. r.o ladie's pat lor, no gas in the bed rooms, give you a candle and charge a shilling lor if. The cooking here is good, but the rest of the house, beds, fires, etc., are simplv execrable, and the priceis fiveguineas a week with many extras. Five guineas is equal to about twenty-six dollars and twentv-five cents in gold. Ladies don't eat'in the general dining room, that is the rule, with few exceptions. so in order lo have meals in rooms, they charge five shillings ($1.2-5)

On ou^_ voyage over we had debate?, in one of which I took part. The subject was: "Which is '.he worse, a slanderer or a murderer?'" I took the slander side, and was demolished in about live minutes by my opponent. I could not make the audience understand that it was woree to be slandered than killed. All decided that to be real dead was about as complete an accident as could happen to any one.
We had a mock trial swore the witnesses on a sardine box to tell as big a fish story as possible. The jury brought the judge in guilty, and fined the prisoner twenty-five cents, to be paid by the prosecuting attorney (myself).
N
We had services every Sunday by a reformed French Catholic priest, who is lecturing against Catholicism. I sang Mo*dy and Sankey's songs, was organist (on a piano), lead tje "quite" (24 of us. therefore "qu re") listened attentively to the sermon in'very broken English, argued with the reverend, atter it was over, as if I disbelieved his theology,a Set the poor man nearly wild by my infidelity, then surprised him more by gravely rebuking a friend for swearing, and argup ing with my friend that there must be a hell and advising him to study his Bible. 1 he poor ex-priest sought my wife and seriously questioned my sanity, and finally got square with me by saying, that I would be a gocd Christian if I was not such a t'col.
During the week we played cards.bet on what we would make, pitched rings on a tick in place of quoitf, eat, slept, walked the deck, looked for whales, but saw none till near Sydney, when we taw about a dozen.
One amateur gambler opened a e&mf» of j- ier, but an old sport, one of th passengers, beat him out-ef $40.00, so he threw his cards and checks overboard. In a few days time grew heavy on his head and he bought some more cards and opened up a faru game. He politely invited us to "buck again&t his game."
did so, and lost five or te: dollar*, and detected the man in cheating so when he was at dinner he had caielessly left his cards in the smoking room. I marked the edge«ot four or five, and as he had no box to deal from, the edges were visible all the time. So when he returned to hi) game, I posted a few new made friends, and we made about $25.00 each. This broke up that game. One evening we got up a concert, admission free no extra charge for reserved seats. Most all sang or played, or recited, except a few snobs, Englishmen and two American imitators. Yet with all this the voyage was very tedious, as so many were sea sick, owing to the roughness of the sea.
We havb not as yet decided where, we will open. Here in this city of 200,000 with large and handsome suburbs there are no horse cars. Cabs, the English hansome cab, the ordinary carriage and omnibuses being the transit methods

The ladies here wear costly "matei ial but it is made up pocrly, looks very coun trifled and hunch,-. We don't claim lo put on any s'Vle. but at the theatre last night the ladies of our party were the beat dre-.sed of any in a lar^e audictice. They have one idea here that is .very *"|jood. In my nvxt letter I will give \ou a description of the many new things that I am «ure will be interesting to your readers. We open here October 19th, forseveral weeks. We will be in Melbourrie, Victoria Australia, November 25th, for several week#.
