JBpoclal Dispatch tj the Evansville Tribune. Mt. Vernon, Ind., Obtober ix, 2:10 P.
A fe# lights ago several negrois went to a house of ill-fame in this town, broke wp the furniture, pointed pibtols at the inmate^ and compelled them to submit to their demands. Three of the party were afterwards arrested. Last night Deputy Sheriff Oscar Thomas and posse watched the house of one of the negroes, who is implicated in the outrage, named Harrison, and about three o'clock they approached the house, when Dan Harrison, father of the person for whom they were watching, fired at them from a window with a shot gun. The load hit Thomas in the face, killing him instantly. Harrison was immediately lodged in jail.
This ir.orning a rumor having been started that parties here had telegraphed to Evansville for the militia to come and take Harrison to that city for salety, it crowd ot twenty-five or thirty men armed with shot guns and revolvers lioarded the down train about a mile liom town and marched through it, but found no soldiers on board. Upon arriving here the mob went directly to the jail, ana for a time things looked scaly for the prisoners. One or two attempts were made to foice the door, but without success.
The court house tquaic is filled with urmcd men flourishing revolvers and swearing vengeance on the murderer. lie will undoubtedly be lynched tonight, unless better counsel prevails. It is believed that Harrison mistook the officers for a party of loafers and bummers who have been tormenting him tor several nights. .j
A negro lad, seeing the crowd aroifnd the jail, approached, k, and was knocked down, and ordered to leave. Becoming frightened, he started to run, when sev/ oral shots were fired at him, taking effeot in his head, and back.

Old Harris was in the corridor of the jail and was literally chopped to pieces and the flesh thrown into a privy in. pieces by the relatives of the murdered man. The crowd which was driven across the street as the hanging began, was after 15 minutes allowed to approach the bodies, which still hang. As the crowd rushed forward the mob quietly slipped away, unmasked, and the members mixed with the bystanders. During the firing to attract attention, Alez. Crunk, the sheriff elect, Ab. Crunk, his brother, John Crunk his nephew, and John Patterson, builder, were accidentally shot. The sheriff will lose an eye and the others are painfully wounded. The mob was very orderly and well disciplined. The four victims of the tr.ob's wrath are suspected of much of the diableirie that has been perpetrated here during the last few months, and two of them are kno wn to be guilty of various crimes.
THE KING OF CORNS.^ .V-. $
.......
KAISED AT INS FTATTT'OV 160 BL?FCTFELS PER ACRE. From Mattoon, Ills., comes the most remarkable corn story on record. H. L. Bridewell, father of Samuel L. Bridewell, of this city, is an cl 1 gentleman, and lives at Mattoon. A year ago he paid one dollar for eight ounces of a new kind of corn he heard of in Kentucky. With that eight ounces he planted one-eighth of an acre, putting one grain ot corn in a hill. It came up slowly at fir»t until jibout two feet high. Then suckers sprang up from the roots, from three to five in each hill, and gTew rapidly until thev were all the size of ordinary corn stalks. .On each one of these stalks from
ears of corn grew. The ears are small in size, but the grains of corn are plamp, hard and sound. Instead of clinging close to the stalks the stent on which tne ears appear grow nearly two feet in length, spreading like branches. Tnt *tne-eighth of an acre which he planted jielded 20 bushtls of corn or at the rate of
160
bushels to the acre.
Next year he proposes to plant twenty acres. He sold some of the corn for seed at the rate of $10.00 a bushel, but soon stopped that, and is now selling a small portion of what he has left for 1,5 cents per ear.
If it cau be relied on to yield, as his •lid this year, at the rate of 160 per acre, or any where near it, a new era has opened up in the raising of this important

The masked guards formed on each side and marched to the south side of the square, and hung Chambers and Good to one tree, and Hopkins and Warren to another. The limb that Chambers was hung on broke, and he fell heavily. He fainted, was restored and was asked to tell all. He gave a rambling account ot something else, and said he was innocent. The rope was thrown over the stump of the limb and ran up again.
