Sinking of an Excursion Boat Loaded With Passengers.

Over 500 People JLost

London. September 3.—The excursion steamer, Princess Alice, returning from Gravesend, this evening, with about 800 passengers, was run down off Barking, bout 8 o'clock, by a screw tteamer.

The Princess Alice was 6truck ami.l ships, and sunk almost immediately. The steamer whJch sunk the Princess Alice is supposed to be the Bywell Castle, a screw collier, bound north in ballast. The steward of the Princess Alice states that after the collision the other steamer proceeded without attempting to render aid. He estimates that 700 persons were on board the Princess A1 ice. She sunk bow first in five minutes alter she was struck. Some 6mall boats and another excursion steamer rendered nrhat assistance was possible. The drowned include an extraordinary proportion of women and children several survivors 6peak of having lost an many as three, five and six children. They describe the water *s covered with hundreds of shrieking people. The captain and nearly allot the crew of the Princess Alice were drowned. They had no time to lower the boats, and there were but a few life buoys on the steamer. All the police of Woolwich town and arsenal were engaged, last night, labeling the corpses chiefly women and children, which completely fill the board room at the steam boet company's offices at Woolwich.

A passenger who scrambled on board the Bjwell Castle says she threw ropes to the people struggling in tne water. The number lost is still uncertain. A comparison of various accounts seems to show about five hundred and fifty. The Princess Alice was a paddle wheel steamer, with raised saloon. Her gross tonnage was 251, and that of the Bywell Castle 1,736. vH

EMMET'S EXECUTIONER^ From the Indianapoli* Sentioel. When Robert Efnmet was hanged, September 20, 1S33, it was knowh only to thice or four persons who was the ex ecutioner, and ever since the question has been frequently asked, but the name of the hangman waR nev£r revealed, and thus for seventy-five years the secret has been well kept, to be confessed about a month ago by an inmate of the work house at Ballina, Mayo county, Ireland. Msran, an old man, ninety-nine years of age, when dying made a confession to the chaplain, toaster and doctor of the work house, and since his death a gentleman ot Dublin has corrooorated the story. Moran stated that he was a soldier in the British army, when he was tent for and offered a large reward if he would the next morning hang Emmet. He agreed, and tells the story of the sad scene. Emmet seemed to expect a rescue, and deferred as long as possible the terrible moment. Even when the rope was fastened around his neck he replied several times to the question "ready?'' "not yet, not yet." Moran became impatient, and even while Emmet was saying "not yet," drew the fatal noose, and watched he declared "with pleasure, the Irish traitor die." He then severed the head from the body and held.it before the peoplfc. He sobb left the army, and for seventy years has been a wanderer, and at last died in a work house. He kept the secret in his part of the fearful scene, because he knew the curses that would rest upon him if his countrymen disco\ered it. But knowing himself to be dying he revealed it, that '*he might find peace to his souH and that no one else should ever rest under the blame of the deed."

BE8T EVIDENCE OF ITS WORTH. The great popularity of Dr. Prices Cream Baking Powder, is the best evidence of its *orth. Whenever a sweet, white biacuit is wanted, or a light potpie, an elegant cake, or a delicious pudding, Dr. Price's Cream Baking Powder should be used. It is purity itself!
