EXPLOSION OF GAS.

The Detroit Free Press Building in Ashes.

All the occupants Escape ... With ButSlight Injuxy.

Entire Destruction of Pres&es, Printing Material, &c.

Detroit, April 29.—At 5:40 this A. M. an explosion of gas in the main leading into the Free Press buildings, took place. The gas ignited and instantaneously the whole edifice burst into ftames. There were at that hour in the building, the chief pressman, two mailing clerks, ni^ht engineer and five pressmen, all of whom escaped after the fire broke out, two of them being slightly injured. The Free Press Co., occupied two four story brick buildings, corner Woodbridge and Griswold streets. The burning gas ascending through the stairways ignited, at once every floor of the two buildings. An effort was made by the pressmen to put on the safety hose and throw it stream of water on the fire below, but the attempt abandoned as futile. The presses were stopped and the forms of the paper were saved. The city firemen were promptlv on hand, but in spite of their efforts the two buildings were thoroughly gutted by the fire. The presses of which there were 12 and the machinery of the Free Press were more or less damaged.

The job rooms contained about $40,000 worth oi material, which is utterly destroyed. The rooms above the job rooms were used as the stereotype foundry and as the mail clerk's room. In the office of the latter every paper was saved intact, including the subscription lists of all the editions of the Free Press. In the rooms next above were loeated the composing rooms and editorial rooms, with the exception of the rear-most room. In the iatter was stored a quantity of new type, which was uninjured. The Free Press company had arranged to set up the present week anew Bullock perfective press with a combination folder and poster, and the foundation lor the press was all in readiness, in anticipation of the New Prtss. Several thousand dollars worth of new type had been purchased and was stored in the building, most of which is lost, including dres» of type now in use. he Post and Tribune, Evening News and Volksblatt, daily papers of this city, and the job printing offices came to the proprietors of the Free Press with offers Of assistance, and every facility for getting out the editions of the paper without delay were offered. The •weekly edition will be delayed a few days, and the publishers beg the indulgence of their subscribers and the newsdealers in every portion of the Union. The new Bullock perfecting press will be set up in an adjoining building immediately where the office is already established ana to-morrow's edition published as usual. Everything in the safe in the counting room was saved. Loss estimated at $50,000 insurance, $42,000. The editors of the paper lose considerable personal property.

HUNTING WILD HORSES. The wild horse can run away from man but this protection fails at times.

The horse-catchers—or "vaqueros" as they are called—are famous riders, and to see them capture a wild mustang is better than to go to a circus. The vaquero puts a Spanish saddle on a tame horse, and starts out to see what he can find. In fron'., 011 the high pommel of the saddle,he hang* in lage coils a leather rope, about a hundred feet long, and called a lasso. It is made of strips of raw hide, braided by hand into a smojth, hard and very pretty rope. One end is secured to the saddle, and the other end has a slip-knot making a sliding noose.

The vaquero has not long to wait, for the.e are droves of horses cantering or walking about oyer the swells and hollows of the prairie, with here and there a "smaller group looking on, or watching a battle, between two horses who wish to be captains of their bands or companies.

1

Presently, there is a strange sound of tramping hoofs like the sound of a squadron of cavalry, except that it has a grand, wild rush and swing such as no cavalry ever had, and a cloud ot dark heads rises over a swell of the land. The leader sees the vaquero, and he halts suddenly, and the others pull up in a confused crowd, and toss heir heads, and sniff the air, as it they scented danger near. The leader does not like the looks of things, and turns and slowly canters away, followed by ail the rest, tramping in confufusion through the yellow grass and wild barley. Presently they become frightened, and away they fly ir a dusty throng.

The vaquero's horse seems to think his chance has come, and he pricks up his ears, and is eager for the glorious fun of a dash after the mustangs. Away they go pell-mell, in a panic, and the tame horse galloping swiftly after them. Down they tumble—some knocked over in the confusion, snorting and flinging I great flecks of foam from their dilated fe- nostrffs, trampling over each other in I' mad haste, each for himself, and the I# American horse sweeping after them §& Now the vaquero stands up in his saddle, and the las*o swings round and round in 1 a circle over his head. Swish! It sings through the air with a whirring sound, and opens out in great rings, while the loop spreads wider and wider, and at last drops plump over the head of a mustang. Tne vaquero's horse pulls up with a sudden halt, and sinks back on his haunches, and braces his fore feet out in front. Ah! How the dust flies! The mustang is fast, held by the slip knot, and he rears up and plunges in frantic ^terror. The rope strains terribly, but th» vaquero watches his chances, and takes in the rope every time it slackens

It is of no use The poor mustang is hard and fast. Perhaps another rider comes up and flings another lasso over his head. Then they ride round him and the mustang is twisted and tangled in the ropes till he can hardly move. He falls, and rolls and kicks furiously, and all in vain. Panting, exhausted, and conquered, he at last submits to his fate. His free days are over, and he seems to know it A few more struggles, tnd he recog nizes that man is his master, and, perhaps, in one or two days he submits to a bit in his mouth, and becomes a tame horse for the rest of his lifa. If, by any chance, he escapes before he is broken in, and runs away to join his wild comnan ions, he seems never to forget that terrible lasso, and if he see6 the vaqueio again, he will stand, trembling and frightened, too much terrified to even run away.

From State Register, Springfield, 111

it W A A S A I W A ~s

With the internal operation of railroad companies the State Register hat no concern, but the external operations of railroads are matters wliich affect every citizen, and which are, therefore, proper subjects of discussion. There is 10 doubt that the producing interests 01 the state are obliged to pay tribute to the transportation companies and now that transportation is as legitimate business as production, both production and transportation ought to fee free from governmental interference, and each being free, will find its greatest profit and will reach its highest development.

It is in.consonance with these ideas that we call attention to the Wabash Railway, as offering advantages to the producers of Central Illinois, which no other transportation company is able to offer. The branchrs of this line tap the grain and meat producing section of the Mississipi Valley at Burlington, Peoria Keokuk, Warsaw, Quincy, Hanniba and St. Louis, All these are importan points of concentration, and these branch lines strike the main line at Decatur, and finally at Lafayette, in the grand plan 1 moving western products to eastern markets.

It is, however, a6 ah Illinois railway that the Wabash is of special interest to our readers. Its main line runs through the great farming -counties of the state, and with its branches, gives the produce of Central Illinois a direct eastern *utet, without obliging it to pay tribute to Chicago stock yards, elevators, commission dealers, or the celebrated corner operators there. The advantages of this lne are very great, and its increasing business shows they are full appreciated, During the late strike its business was .ess interrupted than that of any of the great through lines, for the .eason that its employes are liberally treated, and because, also, the management did not attempt to punish employes or patrons by stopping transit.
