ruled. KANSAS CITY, MO., October 18.—A most gigantic swindle wan brought to Hght, to-day, by the arrest of J. K. Hall, Edward L.8tevfr.«, and George W. Miller, on a requisition of Governor Hubbard, of Texa«, on a charge of forging land titles and is«ning dfds for large tracts of land in Texas. The swindle ^originated with Hull and a msn named
Thoa. Tullis, of Austin, Texas. Hall lives here, and through his persuasion^ Stevens and Miller were brought into the Bcheme. Stevenc, who is a lawyer, and a con of Judge Stevens, of thiscity, is credited with having gone into the operation innocently at first, by buying fourteen thousand acres of Texas land of Iiall, and subseqiipnily became infatuated with the money making plan, and acted freely with the other parties engaged in it, and was known in Texas as a Kansas City liwyer. The better to enable them to curry out their tcheme, Hall and his confederates had made duplicate copies of notarial and other Beale, had obtained (he signatures of many officials. They also had printed here blank forms and perfect copies of 'the deeds n^nesaarv for their operations.
All the title* iu:d patents representing either state or government lands used by them were forged. An immense amount ot lar.d ha* been conveyed by them under many alias"?, and to many diflerent parties. About, a jear ago the attention of Governor Hubbard was called to the matter, and on looking into it a'monstrous swindle was detected, involving both thfi wuite of Texas ann the United States. The authorities at Washington were informed, and Special Agent Foster was sent out here, who obtained a clue, which has been closely followed up ever since, resulting in the simultaneous arrest, to-day, of eixty person# in different parts of the country, who belong to the gang. No less than thirteen court houses have been burned the past year, to destroy evidence that could be brought against the swindlers. HaU, Steven* and Miller left for Texas, to-day, in charge of officers from that state.

GREAT INTEREST SHOWN IN THE MURMUR TRIAL OF JAMES DAVISON AT SHELBYV1LLE,
By Telegraph to the InllnnapoMs Sentinal. Shelbyville, Oct.
19—
Thccase ot the
stall of Indiana vs. Stephen Smith, charged with the murder ol Jatnes Davison, commenced in earnest to day, Judge Charles H. Te6t, ot Indianapolis presiding. Several days have already been taken up in motion*, for a continuance and a change of venue to some other country. The jury was formed about noon, composed of 12 sub staniial citizens chosens from remote portions of the coun'v. At 3 o'clock W. 8. Ray, prosecuting attorney presented the case on behalf of the state in a thorough, forcible and eloquent manner. He was followed !-v Major Gordon in an able ieview citid statement in behalf of the defendant. The Hon. D. W. Voorhees arrived this evening from Washington and will enter his appearance for the defense to-morrow. The case is exciting mora
ordinary interest, and the court room is at all times filled wtth anxious listeners.
A LIBEL CASE.
Win. Duncan, until now a candidate of the Republican party for County Clerk, in Clark Co., has begun a prosecution for libel against M. O. Frost, editor of the Marshall Herald. The facts of the case are as follows: Frost's paper is the organ of the Republican party,—very greatly to the regreat of the party. For 6everal weeks, he has been making charges against Mr. Duncan, of abase character and calling upon the central committee to remove him. Having -the only Republican paper there, it gives him an influence which he would not "•votherwise have, and has placed the party, ?,«iju8t for the present, so much at his mercy, •i
:that
Mr Duncan's removal is a foregone conclusion. Mr. Duncan very naturally '"J feels outraged that a man of Frost's character, or rather lack of character, should ^,*be permuted to fling mud at him, or indeed at anybody. He thinks, and very f-naturally, too, it must be admitted, that for a man who was kicked out of the Post Office for irregularities and who has, or had two criminal indictments hanging over his head, to be say ing anything against his character, is so much like Satan reproving sin, that he will not stand it. It is a pretty .fight it stands.

With the internal operation of railroad companies the State Register has no concern, but the external operations of railroads are matters w'.iich affect every citizen, and which are, therefore, proper subjecta of it cuss ion. 'There is no douBt that the producing interests ot the state are obliged to pay tribute to the transportation companies and now that transportation is as legitimate business as production, both production and transportation ought to be free from governmental interference, and each being free, will find its greatest profit and will reach its highest development.
It is in consonance with these ideas that we call attention to the Wahash Railway, -as offering advantages to the producers of Central Illinois, which no other transportation company is able to offer. The branches of this line tap the grain and meat producing section of the Mississipi Valley at Burlington, Peoria Keokuk, Warsaw, Qtiincy, Hannibal and St. Louis, All these are importan points of concentration, and these branch lines strike the main line at Decatur, and finally at Lafayette, in the grand plan 1 moving western products to eastern markets.
It is, however, as an Illinois railway that the Wabash is of special interest to our readers. Its main line runs through the great farming counties of the state, and with its branches, gives the produce of Central Illinois a direct eastern *utto Cnicago stock yards, elevators, commission dealers, or the celebrated corner op erators there. The advantages of this l«ne are very great, and its increasing business shows they are full appreciated. During the late strike its buainess was less interrupted than that of any of the great through lines, for the reason that its employes-are liberally treated, and because, also, the management did not attempt to punish employes or patrons by needlessly stooping transit.

No portion of the continent of Amer ica presents so much grandeur, beauty and marvelous interest to the Tourist as the famous Rocky Mountain region ol Eastern Colorado, in the vicinity of the beautitul City of Denver. The magnificence of the mountain scenery is equaled only by that of Switzerland, and many Tourists from abroad have pronounced Colorado scenery superior to even that of the Alps. The popular resorts in the mountains, famed alike for their grand surroundings and their magical waters, are daily becoming recognized as the MOST DFLIGHTFUL in America for either health or recreation. Hundreds of people, tired of the resorts of the East, are going to spend the summer in the grand old Rocky Mountains amid its charming parks, majestic snow-clad peaks, grand canons, clear sky and magic atmosphere.
