beauty. That will be new to you. Grace was half frightened at her own success, and I doubt whether she would ever have asked for the key again} but Rabv's word was his bond he handed her the key at dinner-time.

Her eyes sparkled when she got it but she was not to open it before him so she fell thinking: .and she determined to get the gentlemen into the drawing room as goon as she could, and then slip back and *ee this famoi's picture

Accordingly she left the table rather earlier than usual, and sat down to her piano in the drawing-room

'4

But alas, her little manoeuvre was defeated. Instead of the gentlemen leaving the dining room, a servant was sent to recall her was old Christmas Eve, and the Muramera were come.

Now, of all the old customs Mr. Raby had promised her, this was the pearl. Accordingly, her curiosity took for the time another turn, and she was soon Seated in the dining-room, with Mr. J?aby and Mr. Coventry, acting the Mummers

The servants all came in, and, When all were read v. the sound of a fiddle was heard, and a fiddler, grotesquely dressed entered along with two clowns, one called the Tommy, dressed in chintz and a fox'6skin over his shoulders, a fox head for a cap and one, called the Bessy, in a woman's gow/i and beaver hat.

This pair introduced the true dramatis persons, to the drollest violin accompan iment, consisting of chords till the end ot each verse, and then a few notes of melody.

Thereupon in came a man, with black breeches and red stripes at th$ side, a -white shirt decked with red ribbons over his waistcoat, and a little hat with stre imers, and a sword.

The clown walked round in a ring, and King George (ollowed him, holding his sword upright.

'^Meantime the'female clown chanted— Thcnextthat wo callon, ,, ft He is a squire's son, I

Swedes. Theta comments were interrupted by a man, with a white face, who burst into the assembly crying, 'Will ye believe me now? Cairnhope old church is all afire! 'Ay, Squire,' said Abel Eayes, for he was the bearer of this strange news, 'ye wouldn't believe me: now come and see for yourself.'

This announcement set all staring and George the blacksmith did but utter the general sentiment when, suddenly drop-

Then there'was a furious buzz of tongues, and, in the midst ot it Mr. Raby disappeared, and the sword dancers returned to the kitchen, talking over this strange matter as they went.

Grace retired to the drawing-room fol lowed by Coventry. She sat silent some time, and watchhei* koenlv* •I wond'er what has become of Mr. Raby?"

FrgiiU§$*te Register, Springfield,11L Monday' Ausr. 6.1877.

THE WABASH HA1I.WA*.

With the internal operation of railroad companies the State Register has 110 concern, but the external operations of railroads are matters which affect every citizen, and which are, therefore, proper subjects of discussion. There is no doubt that the producing interests 01 thfe state are obliged to pay tribute to the transportation companies and now that transportation is as legitimate business as production, both production and transportation ought to be free irom governmental interference, and each jeing free, will find its greatest profit and will reach its highest development.

It is in consonance with these ideas that we ca'.l attention to the Wabash Railway, a6 offering advantages *o the producers of Central Illinois, which no other transportation company is able to offer. The branches of this line tap the grain and meat producing section of the Mississipi Valley at Burlington, Peoria Keokuk, Warsaw, Quincy, Hannibal and St. Louis. All these are importan points of concentration, and these branch lines strike the main line at Decatur, and finally at Lafayette, in the grand plan 1 moving western products to eastern markets.

It is, however, as an Illinois railway that the Wabash is of special interest to our readers. Its main line runs through the great farming counties of the state, and with its branches, gives the produce of Central Illinois a direct eastern outlet, without obliging it to pay tribute to Cnicago stock yards, elevators, commission dealers, or the celebrated corner operators there. The advantages of this ne are very great, and its increasing business shows they are full appreciated. During the late strike its business was less interrupted than that of any of the great through lines, far the reason that its employes are liberally treated, and because, also, the management did not attempt to punish employes or patrons by needlessly stopping transit.
