The Per potra tor Caught.
Two brothers, young men ahout twenty five years o» age, named Sheppard, living near Seelevvillecame to town yesterday and started to walk up from the Union Depot, when near Mr. Rose's resdence on Chestnut street a neatly dressed fellow met them and asked for the loan ol a knife to sharpen a very dull lead pencil at the same time showing them his knife, an odd looking one, saying he could not open it and handed it to them to see. One ol the Sheppad boys examined it, finally finding a spring succeeded in opening it, just then another nice, innocent look ing fellow came and accidentally, joined.in the group. lie was the '"cap-per-in" to the other nice gent, although they acted a* perfect stranger*. He asked to see the knife and of course suddenly found he couldn't open it, but he bet trie country boys twenty dollars that they couldn't either. They were "dead sure" they could for they knew of '.he secret spring you see, so out came their purse and $20 was promptly countcd and placed in the second gent's hands.

From th Boston Commercial Bnlletlfi.
The English language is often a puzzle to foreigners, and sometimes drives an American hotel keeper into a Corner, as for instance in the following experience at the "Fifth Avenue Hotel, where a wealthy French guest came to complain at the office, and was there met by the gracious Griswold, who rose to explain: •'What for, sare, your garcon not present demand "Your demand, Monsieur?" "Yes, sare. Do I speak Ingli peafait, sare? Do you comprehend me,-sure?'' "Cer.ainly, your English is perfectly correct, my dear sir. What is your desire?" "Vy, Sare, you tell me I can have at mv private table .vis my friens vatever I desire to manger—pardon, to eat. '."Certainly," said Griswold "anything —stewed donbioons and diamond^ sauce if you wish." •'Ah no, Monsieur, zat is too nche. 1 simply desire som* grice."

the abnormal sensations of the organ of digestion to that of thought. Now, digestion is disordered, the brain, being the great focal point of the nervous system all the nerves are in 60tr.e degree af fected The main cause of the nervous trouble is impaired digestion, and that is usually produced by weakness of the stomach. Hostetter's Stomach Bitters rectifies this, and overcomes nervous debility by infusing increased energy into the operation of the organs of nutrition. Through the agency of ihis beneficial tonic, not only are the nerves vitalized, but the entire organism acquires vigor and regularity.

'lhe American mind is active. It hagiven us books of fiction for the senti mentali8t, learned books for the scholar and professional 9tudent, but few books for the people. A book for the people must relate to a subject of universal in terest. Such a subject is the physicia man, and such a book "THE PEOPLE'S COMMON SENSE MEDICAL ADVISER," a copy of which has been recently laid on our table. The high piofessional attainments of its a.ithor—Dr. R. V. PIERCE, of Buffalo, N. Y.,—and the advantages derived by him from an extensive practice, would alone insure for his work a cordial reception. But these are not the merits for which it claims our attention. The Author is a man of the people He sympathizes with them in all their afflictions, efforts, and attainments. He perceives their want—a knowledge of thems selves—arid beliiveing that all truth should be mace as universal as God's own sunlight, from his fund of learning and experience he has produced a work in which he gives them the benefits of his labors, in it he considers man in every phase of his existence, from the moment he emerges "from a rayless atom, too d.minutive for the sight, until he gradually evolves to the maturity ofe those Conscious Powers, the exercise ot which furnishes subjective evidence of our immortallity." Proceeding upon the theory that every fact of mind has a physicial antecedent, he has given an ad mirable treatise on Cerebral Physiologyf and shown the bearings of the facts tlni6 established upon individual and social welfare. The Author believes with Spencer, that "as vigorous health and its accompanying high spirits are larger elements of happiness than any other things whatever, the teaching how to maintain them is a teaching that yields

Mr* Heller then, using his extraordinary powers of ventriloquism, threw his voice right across Bush street to the stage of the theatre, and gave, in Cazeneuve's voice, the word to draw open the cabinet curtains. The gentlemanly interpreter who assists M.
