TUft LOST ARMS OF VENUS.
In 1812 a French midshipman named Vontier, while cruising in the Grecian Archipelago, landed on the island ol Milo, in search of antiquities. In the course of his rambles he happened to sec a peasant digging for stones amonsf the ruins of an oldchapcl. The peasant had just unearthed a portion of a statue, which, not being suited to his purpose, he wa.i about covering up again, when Vontier interfered and paid him liberally t9 complete the cxcavation. The figure thus resurrected after asleep of centuries is now the world tamous Venus of Milo, the most precious gcin in the gallery of the Louvre. Its discoverer died a few weeks ago, and simultaneously with the announcement of his death comes the intelligence that the arms of the Venus have been found within thirty feet of the spot where Vontier exhumed the remainder of the b:dy iorty-six years ago. Our Charge d'Affaires at Athens, General
Meredith Read, writing to the State Department, tiny s:
The arms are exquisitely modeled. One hand holds a kind ofdisc or shield. The workmanship and the locality compel even the skeptical to acknowledge the authenticity of these wonderful! relics.
The peculiar position ot the ligure. taken in connection with the style and expression of the lace, long since convinced classical antiquarian that the fair stranger from Milo was not the typical Goddess of Love, but the embodiment of a stronger ideal and so she has been christened "Venus Victrix.'' Thin opinion would «eem to be fully verified by the relics recently unearthed. The mother ot Cupid and the mistress of Mars would have held in her hand a mirror, or some other device to relied the matchless oeauty or her counte na..ce but, according to General Read, disc or shield supplies the place ot th mirror—the emblem ot war instead the emblem of soltei" passions.
If the arms can be joined .0 their own' er the statue will th* 11 be perfect, excep the left toot, which is modern addition and not a very good one. But we doubt whether the cflect can be materially heightened by the union of the longseparated member and if it is, a visil to the Louvre will be worth a voyage across the ocean. In spite of the miserable location of the statue—in a badly-lighted lower room, with dingy walls for a background—the Venus ot Milo, even in its mutilation, impresses the spectator as no other Venus doss or can. lhe marble woman at Florence, who has been the object of so much esthetic idolatry, is a mere toy when compared with her sister at Paris. The one looks like the favorite concubine ol an Oriental prince, lhe other looks the goddess—"new ligh'ed on a heaven kissing hill." The one excites admiration. The other provokes something akin to worship. The one is ol the earth, earthly. The other is clothed in celestial garments. There is not a trace of the sensual, nor even of the sensuous in Venus Victrix, while in the Venus de Medici there is a great deal of both. A man entering the presence ot the former would not insult her voluptuous thought, while voluptuons thoughts constitute a very considerable portion of the homage paid to the latter. 1 he de Medici suon palls upon the eye and leaves no impression upon the heait. A single glance at the ictrix fills the soul with an eternal memory. The low, broad forehead, from which" the wavv hair is drawn carelessly away- the finely penciled brows, shading the clear-cut lids beneath the straight, strongly-molded nose the rounded cheeks and chin, melting into the firmly-set jaws the soft, sweetlips, so full of mingled tenderness and power—all combine to tonn a pictlire which "once seen becomes a part ot bight."

The name of the artist who called trfis image of intellectual grace and loveliness from tne dull stone, is lobt beyond all hope ot recovery but the nnknown sculptor can afford to be forgotten, since he has left behind him an immortal child—th pure and perfect offspring of a pure and perfect genius.—St. Louis Republican.
SCHENCK'SEA WEED TONIC. In the atmosphere experience here during the summer months, the lethargy produced by the heat takes away the desire for wholesome food, and trequent perspirations reduce bodily energy, particularly those suffering from the effects of debilitating diseases. In order to keep a natural healthful activity of the system we must resort to artificial means. For this purpose Schenck's Sea Weed Tonic is very effectual A few doses will create an appetite and give fresh vigor to the enervated body. For dyspepsia, it is invaluable. Many eminent physicians have doubted whether dys
pepsia
can be permanently cured by the drugs which are generally employed for that purpose. The Sea Weed Tonic in ints nature is totally different from such drugs. It contains no corrosive minerals or acids in fact it assists the regular op erations of nature, and supplies her deficiencies. The tonic in its nature so much resembles the gastric juice that it is almost identical with that fluid. The gastrit juice is the natural solvent which, in a healthy condition ot the body causcs the lood to be digested and when this juice is not excreted in sufficient qunnitics, indigestion, with all its distressing sympton9 follow. The Sea Weed Tonic performs the duty of the gastric juice when the latter is deficient. Schenck's Sea Weed Tonic sold by all Druggists.
