An order by General Sherman announces the following instructions to be followed in reducing the army to 25,000 men, as directed by the Secretary of War yesterday:
All recruiting to be stopped immediately, except that non-commissioned officers may be re-enlisted in in their own companies, provided they re-inlist at the time of the .expiration of their enlistment and at the posls where their companies are, Where a company is below the standard herein prescribed the company commander may re-enlist any good soldier of his company whose term expires, provided it is done at the date of his discharge from previous enlistment, on the expiration of its term and at the station of the company.

The recommendations will embrace the following classes:—
First—Soldiers whose term of enlistment will expire within four months from Tuly 1, 1877, unless they agree to re-en-list i-n their companies at the date of expiration of service. All such men are to be absolutely discharged, so as to get pay on final statements.

Fourth—Soldiers who desire their discharge, which, in the opinion ot their com pany commander, may he granted without detriment to the service.
Department commanders will give orders for discharge upo« these recommendations. This authority, however, is limited to the present occasion. prostitutes are getting altogether
too bold and impudent on our principal streets, and should be immediately checked up. Last evening about seven o'clock several were out promenading on Main street in very scant, loose style of white dresses and no hats, making themselves very prominent, guggling and staring at everybody they passed. Such doings area disgrace to good order and decency, and an insult to all good women. The attention of the police is called to this subject, and they will no doubt put a shortstop to further conduct of this kind, and receive the approbation of all good citizens by shutiing it right down.
BRIDGE EXAMINATION. Yesterday Commissioner J. S. Jordan and some other gentlemen took the tour of the townships looking at bridges. The iron bridge over Sugar creek in the Bioiam neighborhood was found to be in bad condition. It was not built exactly light in the first place and neeede repair. The Honey cieek bridge near Jake Reiman's isalso in need of repairs. Action will be taken at the next meeting of the Court in th«se matters, vitally interesting to the farmers andjthrough them to the business men ofTerre Haute —to«

RIVER SAILORS. I
What is the matter with all eiir pleasure seekers that think they will "ju,st go take a nice little sail down the rirer." They seem to forget that it is necessary to take a sail up the river to get back home after going down, and fiiULt is just where they get badly fooled, "They first get in and put up a sail, and then they .filowlv go down. They think they are sailing so nicely, and indulging in such pleasant thoughts, the scenery with satisfaction, praite nature and all her beauties, and—take a great deal of credit upon themselves for their extraordinary good sailorship and inwardly think themselves to. be second Nelsons in their seamanship. If there are any young ladies along, the bovs are apt to indulge in nautical phrases, speak of the briny deep, etc., and look knowing. This has great effect, you see, upon the innocent ladies, who honestly bestow lavish praises on the gentlemen for|their being such good, skillful sailors. There is the absolute proof, too, for isn't the boat sailing along beautifully Certainly that 6hows skill-. And hasn't Terre Haute produced a Secretary of the Navy What is the use of all such reputation if it doesn't make a resident here know all about sailing down the river. Humph of course they know how. By this time the land sailor is almost bursting with pride and self gratification. Well, the. party go down two or three miles and then think they will return home. Right here the fun commences. They get the boat turned about and get the sail nicely set, and start to go, but in reality find they are runniugdown. Then the bold sailors begin to shift the sail into all sorts of positions to the great annoyance cf the ladies. The sailor begins to feel dubious, turns red in the face, takes a good look at the 9ides and bottom of the boat, and declares that kind of a boat never was good for anything All this time the vessel is still going down the stream. Finally after sundry low but apparently very earnest, certainly very emphatic prayerful ejaculations like "datnisole," cussmiluck," the sailors give in on sail anc. intimate that the boat will have to be rowed home. An inventory is taken and results show one pair of oars, six grown persons, three being ladies and all are heaviest ladies of all the sailor's lady friends, and three miles from home, and the sun just shining at the rate of 100 degrees a minute. It is a truly delightful prospect. Cigars are all used up, the other fellows looking cross and blue with no shade of an offer to help. They didn't come to row, they ca 1 for a sail. Off goe° the coat, then vest, then tie and col lar, and a wish to take off everything besides, as he keeps rowing, not a smile is seen, not a joke told or laugh heaid, and all seemed to have lost all admiration tor the scenery, but discover the water looks dirty, and then the girls go to talking about great big strapping fellows they happen to know, (while the poor devil at the oars is a little slender built fellow, pulling and sweating like an ox. Oh, he feels happy, but his thoughts will keep turning to subjects of how those girls would look dead and drowned. Finally after three hours hard work the boat arrives at the landing, all hands sick, tired, hot and mad, and all friendship ferever broken. Some very sore hands and tired shoulders, all because the over confident didn't know the difference between sailing and floating, between up and down currents of water and wind. This seems to be the luck that has befallen several known parties that have lately went out for a nice little sail down the river.
