..

His Career in the Army.

(From Harding's Herald.)

The editor of the Herald first became acquainted with Dr. &ead nearly thirtyfive years ago, but came to know him intimately during the late war, while he was acting as surgeon of the 21st Indiana. He was a profound and original thinker, with a facility tor expression, either orally or he in writing, possessed by a few men. He was a brilliant conversationist, equally at home in literature, science, politics, war, love or religion, and Colonel McMillian's mess table, enlivened by the good-natured parring between the doctor, the chaplain, (lirakeman,) the coloncl himself and the gallant Latham, was always a feast of reason to be looked forward to.

The doctor came of a fighting family, and an older brother, Abner Read, in command of the gunboat New London, made quite a reputation by the vigilance with which he swept Mississippi bound

while

Butler's New Orleans expedition was gathering at Ship Island. He was afterward promoted to the command of a larger

vessel,

and killed by a fiie from the

rebel battery during the siege of Port Hudson. A half orother, Sheridan Pitt, Read a promising young lawyer of Paris, Illinois, was killed at the battle of Stone river.

Dr. Read was a brave man by lorce 01 his moral nature and a sort of fatalistic by destinv. He had none of the battle-field bravery born of rage, for he was to calmand analytically critically in his intellec tual nature to feel anger at men to whom he has opposed simply by the force of circumstances, and against .vhom he^ could have no personal feelings. The writer remembered to have seen him at the battle of Baton Rogue under circumstances calculated to test his courage. The doctor, contrary to custom but in accordance with chivalrous theory, had established his hospital on the field of battle, and hung up his green scarf to a limb of a magnolia trel as a protection from the fire of the enemy, The 21st, which had taken positioh far in advance ot the other regiments was dnveni back bv Breckinridge's fierce onslaught, and the doctor had to retreat somewhat hurriedly, and in making his way back to the arsenal stepped into a yard to get a drink of water. On coming out he proceeded leisurely down the street' when

entire regiment of confederates, who had come up on the double quick while he was pumping his water or waiting for his turn at the dipper, fired at him. The vicious conical pellets kicked up the dust all around him, fanned his cheek and toyed with his hair, and the doctor's leisurely walk grew into an animated trot. He ran a few steps, and then as if ashamed to manifest so undignified an interest in getting luther down town, he stopped still, turned about took a deliberate survey of the situation, and then resumed his stately walk.

Mr. Read, as we have said, was a bold and original thinker. In a conversation with the writer of this article, shortly after tho surrender of Gen. Lee, he expressed the startling spinion that it would be better for the government to repudiate the entire war debt, and begin again, de novo, than to cairy it. Ot course, he said, such a measure would inaugurate chaos for a time, and would utterly ruin thousands of men, but he contended that such a course would be prodcctive of less suffering than a return to specie payment by the slow process of contraction. He said that business might go on apparently prasperous, tor years, but the longer settling time was deferred the harder it would pinch when it did come. He predicted the panic and the universal depression which followed, but though it would come earlier than it did.

Dr. Read was a book fancier, and his library was rich in quaint old black- etter volumes, in the dead languages, over which he delighted to pour. Hut while gratifying his tas'e for antiquity, he still kept up with the times, in history, politics and science He was one of the few old phvsicians who keep in the stream of progress to the last. Of the many prominent men whom Terre Haute has given to the state there are none of whose attainments she haa greater reason to be proud.

TERRE HAUTE.

ANOTHER PROOF THAT SHE WILL GET AHEAD OX INSURANCE. The GAZETTE was in error in stating that the various A. O. U, W. societies had paid out $16,000 on deaths in this city. There have, during the four years and nine months that the lodges have existed here, been eleven deaths, on •which $22,000 has been paid.

There are five lodges with a membership as follows: 1. One hundred and twenty-two, 2. Ninety. 3. Eighty-five. 4. Sixty-five. 27. One hundred and fifty.

It is estimated that there have been an, average of 200 members for five years. The cost is $17.50 per member, per year, or $17,500 in all. The amount collected in this city for insurance exclusive ot monthly dues which are paid put here, "will not exceed this. As shown above, Terre Haute has received back $22,©oo clearing $4,500.

This is another demonstration of what the GAZETTE attempted to prove the other day with figures given us by insurance men, that Terre Haute always gets ahead of the companies.

WISDOM dont come of loafing about and discussing national finances. The way to learn is to read. Men put their beat thoughts not the books they write. In his connection it may be well to state that Button & Hamilton fif the _widelv known and as widely popular Central Book store as Col. Bob. Ingersol lectures including the celebrated lcctures with Gods beside and miscellaneous collections of general books of priceless value.

A

BLESSING

to humanity is what Dr.

Bull's .Cough Syrup can well be termed, for it has done more good already than any other medicine.

AND still nothing has been done on Decoration day preparations. Only four or five persons attended the meeting for that purpose last night.
