TNE MEN WHO WILL GIVE DIRECTIONS TO THE ARMIES. (.'From The New York Suri.j
The leaders and coti.manders of the two formidable armies abiut to come !n conflict on the banks of the Danube are very.unlike each other. Abdul-Kerim Pasha" is an unassuming man over 70 years of age, with no pretensions t»y a brilliant pedigree, but with a solid reputation as an excellent soldier. The Grand Duke Nich

js fine looking, tall, 45 years old, a brother of the czar, as haughty a prince as the house of Romanoff has ever produced, and asoidier as devoid of a military history as any review and parade guardsman. Abul-Kerim Pasha is the actual commader-in-chief of his army. The Grand Duke Nicholas is a mere figurehead, guided and commanded by his chief of staff, General Nepokoytchizky, the Moltke of Russia,
Abul-Kerim Pasha,s official title is that of Serdar-i-Ekrem, or commander-in-chief as distinguished from the minister of war, Redif Pasha. He is, however, the senior of the minister both in age and experience, and Redif Pasha is much under his control. The old soldier was himself minister of war during the reign of Abul Aziz, and the way in which he lost that placc is characteristic of the man. IIus-6ein-Anvi JPasha, who was asuasinated last year, had fallen, for some private affair, into diffavor with the sultan, lie was dismissed and banisheJ, and nobody at court had dared for years to pronounce hit name. At a council one day a discussion arose concerning military matters aud the possible contingency of war'. The personal qualification of various generals

But, if the professional history of the Turkish genrralissimo is unknown abroad, the Russian commander-in-chief has none at all. The Grand Duke Nicholas has been inactive service since the age of 16, or for 30 year6 past, but he has had scarcely any "field experience. He spent a few day6 in Sebastopol during the siege, and wa6, when quite a youth, attached for some two years to tho general staff of the Caucussus, where he took part in a few skirmishes with the Cnerkesses. lie was brought up as afield engineer, and is at present the chief of all the military engineer of the empire, with General Todtleben as his assistaut. In this case, again, the grand duke is a mere figure-head, and his assistant does all the work- He has also held the posts of general inspector of the Imperial Guards, the presidnt of the supreme committee for the organization and instruction of troops.^ His personality and position in Russia are not unlike those of the Duke of Cambridge in England. Beth are considered good disciplinarians and organizers, and both are dull men, wilhout special military talent. The grand duke is married to the daughterof Prince Peter of Oldenburg, and has two sons, one of whom, the Grand Duke Nicholas, Tr., a youth of 20, is with him in the capacity of an aide-de-camp. The grand duke is the third son of Czar Nicholas, and is, accordingly, uncle ef the two princely sailors at present in this country.
The chief ot the general staff in the Danubian army and the man who will actually lead and command the Russian forces is a Pole General Nepokoytchi— zkv's origin has for a long time been a hindrance to his promotion, but his abilities are to great riot to be ultimately acknowledged. He first distinguished himself as an officer of the general staff and professor of strategy at the military academy of St. Petersburg. He took part in the Hungarian war of 1849 fought in the Caucasus, and was, during the war of 1853-54, chief of staff in the fifth

GOVERNORS.
It is mentioned as a remarkable fact that in less than a year, in 1843-4 Maine had five different governors. Governor Fairfield, elected far 1843, resigned, and Governor Kavough, president of the senate of 1843, succeeded and resigned. Governor Dunn, speaker of the house of 1S42, succeeded, and was superseded by Governor Dana, president of the senate of 1844 and finally Governor Anderson was elected for the year 1844—New York Post
It is "a remarkable fact" that Indiana once had four different governors in three months and eleven days. Governor Williard died on the fifth day ofOetober, 1S60 and thereupon Lieutenant Governor Hammond became governor, and continued to act as such until the 14th day of Jauuary, 1S61 when he gave place to Governor Lane, who was inaugurated on that day. Two days thereafter, on the 16th of January, 1S61, Governor Lane was elected to the United States senate, and resigned the governorship, whereupon Governor Morton, then lieutenant governor, became governor. In place of having five governors in one yeiar Maine should have had in that time around dozen to equal her western sister in executive heads.—[Indianapolis Sentinel.
