A NEW SEI
ADVKKtURESOT VERDANT GREEKThere Is a«»ung gent from Illinois
uow
attending Commercial College on Sixth street, who has been badly taken in and done for by some ot our practical joking voung men and henceforth he will doubt all men. He has lost all faith in brotherly love in the bosom of mankind.
The gentleman is about 6 feet 2 inches tall, and about the regular color of dull green in depth.
A few days ago he became filled with an idea to learn what is meant by demimode, nymphs-au-pave, and what sort of creatures the soiled doves of that class are. In his secret thought he vowed he would know, but where to go, who to call on, what to say, when to go, these were posers. But suddenly he bethought himself of a friend who seemed to know a thing or two, and to him he goes and earnestly relates his woes, and his deep desire to go and see those naughty, bad girls. "All right," said the friend "you shall go." But now a thought came to this friend. He thought: "here is a nice good fellow wants to go in evil ways, I have been and known its wickedness. Therefore I will not be his evil guide, but I will make myself to laugh, likewise all my friends." So he set a time to the ardent greeny and then consulted other friends, and the result was. that last Wetlnesday evening our verdant friend fixed himself up immaculately and laid in a stock of oranges and fruit to tempt the tempting temptresses, whom he was attempting to see and went to see his wise friend. At the usual hour for such visits,—the time is so well known to so many that it need not be mentioned here,—they proceeded to the residence of 9ome gentlemen friends, where the men and several other invited males were 111 readiness for the fun to ensue. The ladies were informed that a joke was to be played, but were not informed the nature of it. Well, ardent greenv and friend were soon there and softly'went to the rear door. Laughter was heard. Greeny was trembling with excitement. Suddenly sharp voices were heard, rough questions asked, and men came rushing at him. It was to much. Down went the bundle, bang, bang, went numerous torpedoes. This lent agility to his fear, and making a rush, Greeny at one bound cleared a five foot board fence without touching it, to the great surprise of all that were looking on. He landed on a lot of old tin cans and rubbish, screaming and yelling, '"Oh, don't, don't, don't,"—and they didn t. They could hear him diving down the alley and road, while all shouted and laughed. Those torpedo shots were awful. Greeny still lives. His heart is broken. He hates the sight of women, and don't exactly feel easy in the sight of men. Moral: Be and you will be happy.
QUICK EARS
It is sometimes surprising to see how animals leatn to pick out the sound in which they take an interest froni the thousand noises of the city. In Pans a man who goes about with cheap meat for the cat, rings a bell as he approaches the house of a customer. Long before the members of the household detect the sound, pussy will spring to the door, and with eager looks await the arrival of her benefactor for as she had no ideas of the trade 6he can only look on the "cat meat man" as a true philanthrapist. She can always pick out his voice and tone amid the turmoil of the busy street. gentleman away in a western seaport was down on the wharf one day when he saw a great dog spring up and prance about in a very joyful manner. He could see no reason for the excitement but a b) -stander explained, "That is Mr. Fairy dog. He is mate on board the 'Alexandria,' and as soon as he hears the wins tie of that boat he knows it and goes for it."
Sure enough, the dog started off at full speed for the dock when the vessel stopped, and as soon as it touched the wharf he boarded it, and sprang to meet his beloved master. The owner ot such a faithful dog ought certainly to be a good master To most people the whistle of one steamboat was much like another but this shaegy fellow had learned the exact tone of the one for which he watched and waited.
COMING THRO'THE RYE. A correspondent of the Burlington (Vt) Free Press, after referring to the letter of M. P. Hortley Waddell, Burns' biographer, concerning the story about the song, "Coming thro'the rye,' says: "1 visited an ale house in Dumfries, where Burns often met his convival friends. The Scotch lassie in attendance called my attention to a pane of glass in the window where Burns had written with a diamond one verse of the song, "Comin' thro' the Rye." My impression was that the song was composed in that room, and this verse written before it was put on paper. Burns had a farm near this town, and his employment more nearly connected with beautiful fields of grain than seeing his darling Jennie wet her pretty feet in comin' thro the burn, There is no stream in that part of Scotland known bv the i.ame of Rye—in fact all the rivulets have far prettier names, Robert Burns was born in Ayr, and died in Dumfries, where, in St. Michael's church-yard, is the handsome monument the angel of inspiration hovering over Burns at the plough. This town is surrounded by rich fields, many of which would inspire a poet with words for the memorable song of "Comin' thro' the Rye." THE WISE COURSE IN RHEUM

TISM.
Rheumatic patients who have been induced to submit to depletion by blood letting, or to take colchicum and other drugs of an equally pernicious character, will consult their well being by abandoning such insane procedure, and using as a substitute Hostetter's Stomach Bitters, which will infallibly afford them the much desired relief, and is absolutely safe. This benign vegetable depurent cools the blood by expelling from it the inflamatory elements which give rise to maladies ot a rheumatic and gouty type, and rectifies disordered conditions of the stomach, nervous system and bowels which usually accompany them. As rheumatism has a tendency to attack the heart, the desirability of an early resort to the Bitters is obyious, since the danger is increased by every moment of delay.,
