Under the Sod.
Burial of Wild Bill.
Written for the New York Clipper and Dedicated to Charley Utter (Colored Charley).

Captain J. W. Crawfosd, otherwise "Captain Jack," is ateo known west of the Missouri as the Poet-scout of the Black Hills, and last winter his extempore songs and poetic declamatiens were the life of the mining-camps in -that section. As guide to an expedition in search of gold, he was one of the first to explore the Black Hill country, and credited to him arc some of the quickest and most daring rides on record. Last August, in response to a telegram from .Buffalo Bill, (W. J". Cody) he started on horseback and alone, to join Gtneral Cnook, whose command he foand in five days, offer a ride of

country. On another occasion he carried dispatches for a leading New York newspaper from Owl creek to Fort Laramie, a distance of over

April 2, 1865, after hich he was discharged. Since then ha» led a wandering life, mostly on the plains. He has written many, poems after the style of Bret Harte. Gen. Custer's death was first put into rhyme by him. James B. Hickox (Wild Bill), who was kiiled at Deadwood Wyoming Ter., ~n Aug. 2d last, was tlie husband of Mrs. Agnes Lake, widow of the widely-known circus manager William Lake, who was murdered at Granbj- Mo. Aug. 21, 1869, by a man whom he ejected from his show for attempting to see it without paying. The murderer ot "Wild Bill" was hung March 3d,
