St. Patrick.

A day Spent in Honor of Erin's Patron Saint.

fric Pronounced on lev- Maurice Bierl.

by

him

An Elegant Procession,

In spite of all the fear* of a mean slushy, snowy clay, such as the weather of the past week plainly predicted, the sun shone out on St. Patrick's Day, this morning, quite as royally as any gcod Irishmen could wish It was a highly satisfactory surprise. According to an nov.ncement, the varioug societies met at their hail and formed, and proceeded thence to St. Joseph's church, whrre RevFather Maurice Bierl pronounaed the following:

Panegyric of St. Patrick. Whosoever shall glorify me, him will I glorify, says the Lord, Kings, 2, 30

The finished work of a master rarely betrays the care, labor and time consumed in its execution. The grand cathedrals, the wonderful works of sculptors and painters, the learned works of celebrated writers,, all present to the student's eye unity of truth and beauty, such embodiment of a grand idea, that they seem to be the creation of the divine genius, rather than the work of man. •In honoring St. Patrick as the great apostle of Ireland, viewing the glorious results of his liibors, wc are apt to think that he came and conquered, taking peacelul possession of the primacy of Ireland until he died. We might as well think that the great St. Peter's church in Rom* grew out of the earlhover night Like in all the saints of the church, so also in St. Patrick must we see the guid Ing hand of Divine Pr vidence joined to the great labor of the individual whom God chose to carry his name among the Gentiles. At all times God made his promi true to his saints, that, "all who glorified Him, they would be glorified by Him."

As we know the tree from its fruit, we may justly suppose, that it was principally the honor and glory of God, which St. Patrick sought in his prayers and sufferings, during the years he spent as a slave inlreland. Patient suffering makes the Christian godlike: St. Patrick, in his tender youth, had an abundant ohare of it. Torn away from his parents, his companions, ajul his country, he was brought into slavery in a pagan country, whose language he did not understand, for what great vocation God was preparing him by this misfortune, we find him humbly sub mitting to the will of God and offering his fervent prayers for the conversion of the Irish as much as for his deliverance from bondage That he prayed in the open air, kneeling in the snow, in the dead of night, shows tlvat his ardor made him Insensible to the col'l and to bodily suffering, inlfact, that at the age of sixteen years, he enjoyed the sweetness of heavenly raptures', and that he was elected by GoJ, to become a prodigy of Christian perfection, uniting in one, the austerities of an anchorite with a fiery zeal of an apostle.

When God brought they^ars of his captivity to a close, when he was restored to his uncle, Martin of Tours, it seems, that troin long habit, the object of his prayer remained the same the conversion of Ireland. God was with him he blessed his studies called him to the priesthood and fitted him under the eyes of the supreme pontiff, for his future grand mission.

Having glorified God in his extraordinary love of prayers, and purity of heart by his obedience and application to his Studies and duties, God commenced now to glorify him. It is true, beyond a doubt, that God, granting his prayer, signified to him to return to Ireland with an apostolic commission, and the dignity of archbishop, from Pope Celestine. When he beheld again the Emerald Isle in the lovely beauty of spring, he looked upon it with the eye of a conjurer, and his bosom swelled with lo\e and gratitude towards his divine master, v. ho had chooscn him for the father and spiritual ruler of that beautiful island and its inhabitants.

On the same soil, where he had, in his infirmities, glorified God during seven years, God would now glorify him for seventy years by miricles, virtue and gifts, so astounding that no one could resist his preaching, and that, in his lifetime the whole nation, was converted. 1 God lengthened his days.because the task he had called him to perform, required the most arduous labors of many years. He wanted to give to the dear saint the same consolation, he had given to S. S. Peter and Paul, to live long enough to see the fruits of his labor.

What tongue can tell of the cares, the sufferings ot mind and body, which his work daily cost him. Yet, like St. Paul, he gloried in his sufferings, and unceasingly, his prayers would ascend to Heaven, his self-impoted austerities would increase to draw down upon the souls ot his dear converts more and more abundant, heavenly blessings!

He. who glorified God, during his long life, bv his prayers and virtues, by his apostolic zeal and wisdom, by all his works—died, a saint, glorified by God during his life and after death, by many miracles and signs.

Those who enter the portals of Heaven, remain, for all eternity, objects of glory.

Father Maurice then continued eloquently on the glories ot St. Patrick. When the exorcises at the church had concluded,

THE PROCESSION FORMED

and proceeded on the line of march as advertised. Mr Jno K. Durkan, as Chief Marshall elegantly dressed ahd mounted on a. aplendicMy caparisoned white horse, headed the procession. It was the gen-

era

remark that Mr. Durkan made the best marshal which Terre Haute^has had on St Patricks's day for a longtime.-

He

was followed by the German Military Band discoursing sweet music. Following was Captain Hocter's miltarv company, excellently drilled, and presenting such a show as to call forth mniversal praise

The Hibernian Benevolent Society presented a good appearance. The new

beaver hats much improved the street appearanee of the order. The Cadet Band looked well as usual

The St. Josephs Temperance Society, Ancient order of Hibernians, and Youn Men's Sodality next followed in the order in which they are here named.

The procession, taken as a whole, was the most marked success which Terre Haute has witnessed on St. Patrick's day for many years.

The line of march was thronged with people and the procession was followed by the happiest crowd of Irish young people which our streets have seen fer some time.

It is a happy thing that St. Patrick Day makes nobody sad. It lights up many hearts it is a kind, forgiving, proud and thankful day and every Irishman made better for it.
