First Speaker—Why don't you believe that such a woman ever existed? Second Speaker—Because I never saw -,er—I never knew anvthin aVmt her. I) our^''dly. "Did you ever .see your yreat grandfather?'' First Speaker (icily)—"Did you ever hear tell of Queen Esther of the Jews?" "I did that.'' "And how when King Iloloferues wanted to decoy her and make a deceived woman of her she, slew him with a hammer and a nail, as it might be me and you, and brought victory to the Jew?"

BABY TALK.

From the Boston Ti ave lcr.

As "Frank," who had been taught to believe that he had been made of dust, stood watching the dust as tlv- wind was whirling it in eddies, he exclaimed: "Ma, I think th.: dust looks as if there was gong to be another little boy maue."

"Papa," Clara said, "what makes the sky so bright?' Papa was wrestling with the latest question before the National Returning Board, and there was no answer. "1 know," she continued. 'fG'.d pounded it with his hammer."

A four-year-old boy's definition ol thunder and lightning was, ".God scratch es a match and that makes the ilasli, and then he takes a big hammer and knocks, knocks, knocks, and that's the noise."

A gentleman had occasion to correct his daughter, aged 4 yeais, recently.' After it was over, and she had sat awhile, she went to her mother and inquired: '•D..n't yoi» think it would dn papa good to go outdoors?"

AN Oconomowoc, Wis., paper has the following advertisement tor a lunaway daughter: "Stolen, ifom the residence Of Abel Crowfoot, proprietor of the Fremont Mills, their eldest daughter, Thirzah. If the sneaking thief will return her to her former happy home, and not drag her into misery with himself any further, he will be suitably rewarded by being set up in the boot business in good hape."

LABELING LIVETROUT. Numerous experiments and continued observations, made under the auspices of some of the practical pisciculturists be longing to the association, have developed results full of interest and of much practical value. For instance, in reply to queries ar to the probable age of the mammoth trout found in the Kangeley Lakes, Professor Agassiz emphatically declared that "no man living knew whether these six and eight pounders were ten or two hundred years old." To get some light upon this question, Mr. Page con ceived an ingenious device, which he at once proceeded to put in execution. Platinum wire was obtained, cut into one and half inch lengths, flattened at one end, and various numbers were stamped on the surface from to 4 also the nuni bers 70, 71, 72, to denote the year. As trout were captured they were weighed, one of these tags was passed througn the skin just under the adipose fin and securely twisted, and then the fish was liberated. In tne course of the two or thre^ years named a laige number of these trout were thus labeled. Ol course the chances that any of them wouW be caught seemed infir\itesimally small) 3 et in 1873 one of them reported. In June of that vear, Mi. Thom \s Moran, theartist, captured a fine, vigorous trout weighing 2^1 pounds. Upon taking him trom the landing net the platinum tag flashed in the sun light. Upon examination, the mark, —71," was discovered, thus establishing" the curious fact that this particular fish had gained 1^4 lbs in twe years.—"T out Fishing in the Rangeley Scribner for February.

EDUCATED FLEAS.

A troupe of 100 educated fleas are on exhibition at Philadelphia. They dance polka, flirt with one and other a la mode and, it supposed indulge now and then in a very natural if not fashionable hop.

There

is a wild flea that it chained by a, four-hundred linked chain by the ankle, and a sybil flea, that tells fortunes—so the signer says—and a steet car flea which, contrary to all usage, draws the car from the outside, don get inside even in a pinch. Altogether, with the exccption of the wicked flee known to travelers in Egypt, the putce" ofthe Italian aulergo, the' "puce" of the French auberge and the Spanish "pulga' the*« flees area charming collection. They are not so cunning, remorseless or hung rj as Holy Land fleas, and do not take nips like their American kindred. There is daring rumor that the si^nor, who has educated these charming httle actors is at work with a choice band of mosquitos for opera chorus, and that he has found some sweet roices among the male insects.
