After rolfia-j the fine cut under his tongue he on: "It is a goodtnany yews back. I he prison was 'w. and the management was »*ot hatir now, of course. Some body escaping every week or so, and it w.a«*v enough to smuggle in money and 4» »1^ and cook up conspiracies There w.'re 179ofus, and the wickedest man in prison vas a horse-thief and highway robber named Ben Mason. Ihwas in iVw fifteen years, I believe, .and feeling desperate isle, he was as jyjly as Satan. Thev had lain in the kitchen as cook, and in those day* the prisoners had little or no work ani were locked up roost of the tiir.e. Hen hadn,t been in prison a hundred days before he warked up one of the wickedest plans you ever heard of. He wu to lead a rebellion, and we were to murder every prison official, Rrm as best we coulJ, and then march down and plunder and burn the town."

The old man pauaed a moment as the door opened, and then continued: "All the details of the plan were soon communicated to every convict, and every single man was agreed. Ben made a "y, or two or three of them, by which »ie could unlock all the cells. Only two guards were on duty in the corridor at night, and they were at one end. Tlxn wreie changed ut one o'clock at night, and it often happened at this hour, that thi guards weic ten or fifteen minutes in getting in, thus leaving an interval to be taken advantage of. Well, the programme was for Ben Mason to unlock his eeli door, just before 1 o'clock. He could easily do that from the inside, with ie locks then in use. As the old guard passed out he was to fly from door to door, let out as many convicts as he had time to, and then overpower the new

guards as they came in. This doneR all the con' icts ould be liberated, and we would sweep the prison with a rush. A certain Thursday night was the date fix ed upon, and I tell you there was murder in the air!"

He held his hands over his face, as thinking, and there was a long pause be fore he said: "That same Thursday afternoon, when every man was trembling with expectation, two ladies and a little girl were ad mitted as visitors. Ben Mason was that day doeing some extra work—something that took him into the yard. The ladies' passed him, and there was somethinu about his f.ice, fierce, as it was. to attrac. the litHc girl. She ran to him, '.ooked up into his face, and innocently asked: 'Haven't you got a little girl too?' Now, Ben did have, and her words cut him like a knife. The wee thing grasped his hand to detain him, and holding up a little dol which she had carried on her arm, she said: 'You may take this home to your little girl!' Ben took the plaything from her hand, and you could have knocked him down with a straw. Though bold and bad, he was big hearted and loved his wife and chrildren.

Well, sir, he was floored. He turned booby right away, and I'll be hanged it 1 didn't see biir tears running down his cheeks At"i o'clock that night, when he was to let us out and head the rebellion, he was on his bed hugging that doll and crying like a child, and so our plans were for nothing. I think he was a reg"ulat oui woman, sir—a regular idiot."

And vet when I looked into the old man's eves he was wiping the tears a-vay.
