TWEED'S ESCAPE.

An Astounding Story of a Runaway Sailor—Report# a Mysterious Execution on the Franklin.

Mtw York lirpatch, November 0.

Great excitement has been caused to day among Tweed's friends by the reception by to-day's steamer of the copy of the Clark (Ireland) Journal of October 27, containing the following:

The steamship Persia put ashore yesterday, at Qweenstewn, a man who tells a remarkable 6toryto the police who took him in charge. He claims that in the early part of September he arrived, in destitute circumstances, at Gibralter that while- there news came of the arrest at Vigo, Spain, of the famous bandit Tw eed. •W'10 robbei so manv people in New York, and also that the United States man-of-war Franklin was ordered to take the robber chief home. Not finding any other way of getting something to elt, this man, who gives his name as Du

never saw the prisoner, he says, the

being confined to the tabin. From conversations overheard between the officers, he understood that the Franklin was sailing under scaled orders, not to be opened until well out to sea.

October 9th all the officers, save those in charge of the vessel for the watch, w«re summoned to the cabin, and a long meeting was held. The rumor about the ship was that the orders had been opened and that the prisoner was being tried. When the officers came on deck again they all looked very solemn. Four days later, October

Uu K.ass says that all

hands were called on deck a^ noon. The marines were formed in a hollow square, in the center stood a man with his arm and feet bound and his face covered with folds of black crape. He describes the man's ligure as being rather sliort and slim.

At a signal, a rope with a noose at one end was run through a block at the end of the maintop y»rd-arm. The noose was then placed'over the prisoner's neck. In doing this not a word was spokea The u'osi astounding and incredible part of Du Kass's •narrative is, that in moving the head of the condemned, the crape was loosened and fell lrom his face, and that face belonged to J. Wilkes Boath. the assassin of President Lincoln of the United States, lie declares that he was not deceived that l\e has seen Booth in plays a dozen times, and can no*, be mistaken, though he knows thai he is reported to have been killed long ago. The man's face was vtvv pale, his eyes were closed, and he bowed his head forward as it to hide himself. The nuiller was at once rearflUnged and the man hung. No prayer, not a word was said, and at mmdnight that nig1-1, without burial service, the body was tossed into the deep. All this happened, according to Du Kass, in latitude codeg. 10 min, and longitude

m,in. At night ths ship's route was changed due south to the l'acitic. Ihis did not suit Du Kass, who seem\ to be a particular sort of fellow, and a sailing vessfl being about a mile away and the sea calm, he slid over the side ol the Franklin, undiscovered, and swain away to the utUer ship, which he found to be an East lndiaman outward bound and driven from her course by a heavy storm. Tnis left him in a worse plight than ever. But about noon the next day the Persia hove in sight, took him on board and lauded him as has been stated. 1 lie police regard Du Kass with much suspicion, and Inspector O Mallaghan has determined to hold him subject to orders ofthe Con.-ul of the United States.

Du Kass is described by the Journal as a mm of perhaps fifty-five years of age, about live feet ten inches in height, rather corpulont, with a long, lull lace and heavy gray beard. His faces is a peculiar one, combining the good-hum-ored simplicity ot the workman ith the Persia lias been tetegraphed to for information as to the man.

LATER.

-Since the above was written," says the Journal' "a dispatch has been receivfrora Captain Mandranning,of the Persia, which states that Du Kass was nicked up in mid-ocean in an open boat, on which was painted the name U. S. S. Franklin, and that he then refused to give any account of himself The crown has ordered the de

tention

of the prisoner until the United

States has been communicated with. The run.or on the streets this morning that the Franklin had been signalled oil' Sam'.y Hook caused great excitement among the Tammanyites, who, relying upon the statement in the Cork Journal, inferred that Tweed had in some manner made his escape. The falsity of the rumor has made them more than ever hilarious, and the be® are freely made as to his escape.

AN AFFECTING REUNION.

Thursday morning David Barber, of West Bloomfield, Oakland County, called a* the Gratiot avenue police station and said that he was in the city for the purpose of finding a dog which had been stolen from hiin two or three days previous by a colored mau who was at work lor one of Mr. Barber's neighbors. The officers at the station took a description of the dog and promised to try to find him, and Mr. Barber left, saying that he should stay in the city until his search was successful.

Saturday morning Mr. Barber returned to the station apparently verj much discouraged and had been there but a short time when he saw Roundsman Whalen coming down the avenue leading the lost canine. He arose quickly and stepped to -the front door, where he stood with tears in his eves, watching the approach cf the jog, who, when within about one hundred feet of the station, saw and recognized his master. With a powerful and lightning-like spring he broke away from the officer, and the next instant master and dog were showering each other with all manner of affectionate caresses, totally unconscious of the presence of a dozen officers. When the meeting had resolved itself into comparative quiet, it was seen that not only were tears cours ingdown Mr. Barber's cheeks, but the dog was actually shedding tears of joy.

Upon "being questioned as t® the reason of his extraordinary adection for a dog, Mr. Barber related the following story: "Three years ago this dog and n»y hoy, then three years old, went together to Straight Lake, a short distance from my home, and while there my boy clambered "into a boat that lay upon the beach. In

-1

their sport the boat became free and floated away with the boy. The dog did not see the boat and its load until quite a distance from shore, when lie immediately jumped into the lake and swam after him. He was none too soon, for when the boat was about twenty rods from the shore :t capsized, and my boy was thrown into the water. He had sunk twice when myself and several neighbors who had gathered on the beach saw this dog seize the boy by the shoulder in such away as to hold his head high above the water. Then he swam toward us. He approached steadily, but we became impatient and waded out as far as possible to meet them. When he reached us the boy was not only carried ashore, bnt strong arms lifted the dog and carried him also. Do you wonder now that I love him?—[Detroit Free Press.

THE BOY WITH*THE STRAW HAT. It doesn't make any difference whether he was the son of a duke or only a curbstone orphan. lie came down town yesterday morning with a straw hat on his head and a hat concealed expression of villainy on his face, and he at once made for one of the chestnut stands along Woodward avenue. There were roasted chestnuts in the raw, and the salesman was happy until the boy with the straw hat walked up and boldy inquired. "Anything inside of these chesnuts?" "Of course the nut is inside," was the reply. "Yes, I know, but what is inside the mit?" "Nothing." "There isn't eh? I shall now demonstrate that there is. I shall demonstrate that three out of every five of these chestnuts are "You keep your paws off this stand or I'll hurt you!" exclaimed the man. "Touched a tender spot, didn't I?" sneered the ben. "However, I can demonstrate the point in another way. Now it is estimated by naruralists that only one chestnut out of every three comes to maturity. The balance are stricken down in their youngdays and are seen no more. Now, again——" "You clear out!" shouted the dealer, who saw a crowd collecting. "Figgcrs are figgers," resumed the boy. "Now, only two out of every five matured chestnuts are perfectly Mund. The other three contain "I'll have you arrested!"yelled the old man, looking around for an officcr. "I've got a solemn right to cast up figures on the street," letorted the boy. "I've given this matter a good deal of thought, and I'm going to demonstrate that the boy who buys live cents' worth of them chestnuts gets at least ten or eleven "Call an officer! call an officer!"' whooped the old man. tr\ing to hit the boy with a slick. "I shall now proceed to go into orthography, and spell the name of what ails the respectable minarityof them chestnuts." continued the boy. "Stand back till I have a spelling school! Now then

An officer came up just then and ordered the crowd to disperse and the boy with the straw hat moved across the street and yelled back:' "I n, in, a-e-x, sex, insex, and don't you forget it!"—[Detroit Free Press.

Having been badly afflicted with Salt Jtlieum, ana the whole surface of my 6kln being covered "with pimples and eruptions, many of which cansed me great pain and annoyance, and knowing it to be a blood disease. I took many of the advertised blood preperations, among which was any quantity of Sargaparaila, without obtaining any benefit until I commenced taking the Vegetine, and before I had completed the first bottle I saw that I had got the right medicine.
