Tin re are portrays of but tup of their children,—of cr.e of the sons, w?cse widow now occupies the chateau, ai oi rj.eir .*i!v daughter, the l)uchi-.« De ]f -i lie. Hers is the most attractive face :pnong them all. It is thoughtful, and frtv-et, and serious almost to sadne*. It iss ii she inherited many of her mother's superior gilt, and face indicates as much.
We were shown family-apartments in' *c'ual use, and those of former days but trhey have changed in all their appointments, and, with the exception of the one which served as Madame De Stnel's library, have little interest to the stranger. This is a long, spacious room, with its walls almost hidden by the now empty 'liook-cases. The books themselves have been removed to Paris by the Due De Sroglie. On the top of the cases, quite near together, are antique bron :e busts of freCrreck and Roman heroes of literature ttnd mythology. Between the long winlows, on one side of the room, there are bree interesting portraits, One of Madmc De Stael herself, personating the "eroine of her Roman story, "Cronine." (er dark completion, lustrous eyes, and iie indolent attitude her exceeding grace vrmitted her to assume, all fitted her to present well the Italian girl, who, it is
JSUi-l, was the reflection of her inner self. Near by is the portrait of Schleeel, her friend and adviser for so many years, while he was the tutor of her son. A bust as the mar.tlc, and another porti ait o! the Duchess De Bioglie, confirm the impression of a lovely haracter, tormed from the fust one seen. Such a face could but be the mirror of a rare soul.
But the central object of interest in the library is a life-sized statue of Necker. It is bv Canova, and is worthy of that ideal master. The attitude is most graceful. With the kft hand, he holds against the hreast a sort of cloak with the right, he points up and away. The fnce is tollowiiig the gesture of "the hand, looking up with a ioftincss of expression that is almost inspiration. It is as if the artist had ®fc3n his subject with Madame De Stael's loving eye, and so had cut from the spotless marble almost a speaking semblance of him who was to his daughter "the nohjest and the best of men."
After all, the memories that hinge about the chateau at Coppet are more interesting than anything c.ur good, kind guide could show us. Here Necker sought refuge, again ami again, when his ungrateful soyereiga thought he could rule better without a cool brain and wise judgment at the head of the the Bureau of Finance. Hither later, herself an exile, Madame le Stael came to share her father's loneliness and here they were happy together, because, thqpgh robbed of so much, thev still had each other. Within these wails many of Madame De Stael's ablest vorks were written,—written with such ower that each1 successive one made vjapolfion fear her genius more, and so ndnced him to make her banishment ^orc painful. ucit i\ecker died, and was laid a tittle cemetery close to the chateau. Years before,'Madame Necker had been buried in the quiet spot: and, in ibij, Madame Dc Stael was placed beside her other members of
parents. Since then, oth ihe family have been laid here, and those who remain all&>y, with wise delicacy, the tall trees and high wall to screen the sacred »pot from strange eyes.
