Tricks as Performed Chickerin^ Hall Last

From I he Now York Graphic. Mr. Washington Irving Bishop ci-r-tainlv performed a series of remarkable feats" before the auclicnce he got together at Chickering Hall last night. 1 lie leading members of all the professions in the city were present—the most eminent physicians, the most gifted preachers, well-known lawyers, and prominent public men assembled t» witness an exceedingly clever exposure of tricks which have long deluded a certain portion of the community under the name of "spiritualism."

Anion"" the iiutlicncc were -Mr. iniam Fullerton, Rev. Wtn. R. Alger, Father Farallv, Professor Draper. Dr. John Wood, Colonel Stehbins, Professor Dalton, Rev. Dr. Gottheil, and mftiv other leading citi/.ens. On the plattonn assisting in the performance (which was (or the benefit of St. John'sGuild) were Dr. W. II. Hammond,' Rev. Dr. Deems,

Dr. Sims, Dr. Mott, and other scientists. Whik* in the nature ofa general exposure of spiritualism, Mr. Bishop's avowed aim was to lay open the tricks of Mrs. Eva Fay, who" has succeeded in hoodwinking Professor Crookes and the Royal Society ol England. It is needless foi us to describe r. Bishop performances, as a full account of them, has already appeared in THE GRAPHIC 011 the occasion when fie gave a private seance in this establishment, and fullv explained to our artists and writers all the modes of deception operated by the so-called mediums. The article we then published was amply illustrated, anil was complete of its kind.

Last nigt the tricks were repeated with surprising skill. Mr. Bishop was tied and bound in the conventional way, and executed all the principal feats of the Davenports, Eddys, Fays with a dexterity that amazed" the audience and left them for a time in doubt as to whether the young gentleman was not in league with "the"sperrits" after all. When, however, he illustrated in the ft calcium light the simple way in which the thing was done, the amused audience applauded more than ever, lie showed

SStcdin the full blaze of the

4

the feats of the noted mediums. As we have sr.iJ. the audience was an

As we Have sr.u, me uumcm-v. ....

PrirtJ to the performance Dr. Hammond made an admirable opening address, in the course ot which lie stated

that $3,000 had been placed in his charge by a-wealthy friend, who had offered- the money to any one who would perform 1 the usual spiritualistic tests under such conditions as to satisfy a committee of three scientific men (to be named bv Dr.

Hammond himself) that they could not be accounted for by any known physical arencies. This is a challenge to the w-liole Spiritualist tribe to make $3,000 by performing their tricks without detection.

Mr. Bishop also announced that lie would give $soo to any medium who would exhibit any trick which he himself could not berform after witnessing it

three times. It is about time this spiritualistic nonsense had its quietus. It has long enough bewildered a number of well-meaning but weak-minded people, and has sent not a few of them to our lunatic asy I lums.

John Forster.

•*1 I first saw John Forster, the bingraph-

er

of Goldsmith and Dickens, in his •pleasant rooms, No. 58 Lincoln's .Inn Fields. He was then in his prime and looked brimful of energy. His age might have been forty, or a trifle onward from I that milestone, and his whole manner announccd a determination to assert that nobody need prompt him. Ins voice rung loud and clear, up stairs and down, 1 everywhere throughout his premises

When he walked over the uncarpeted floor you heard him walk, and he meant you should. When he spoke nobody equired an car trumpet the deaf never lost a syllable of his manly utterances. I Proctor (Barry Cornwall) and he were in the same commission, and were on excellent terms, the younger officer always warding the elder with a kind of Icon me deference. Forster's library was filled with treasures, and he brought to the dinner table the dav I

first with him such

rare and costly manuscripts and annotated volumes to show us, that ones appelate for "made dishes" was quite taken -jawav. The excellent lady whom he after 1\Vard married was one of the guests, and among the gentlemen present I remember hhe brilliant author of "The Bachelor of ithe Albany." a book that was then the inovel sensation of London. Forster flew jj-om one topic lo another with admirable skill,' and entertained us anecdotes of Wellington 'and- Rogers, gliding the time .Kvith capital imitations ot his celebrated" ^contemporaries in literature and on the

met Felton, and when the professor arrived at London Dickens, with his love of fun, arranged a bit of cajolery, which was never quite forgotten though wholly forgiven. Knowing how highly Foster esteemed Felton, through his writings and his letters, Dickens resolved to take Helton at^ once to Foster's house and introduce him as Professor Stowe, the port of these gentiemen being very nearly equal. 1 he Stowes were then in England on their triumphant tour, and this made the atattempt at deception an easy one. So, Felton, being in the secret, he and Dickens proceeded to Forster's house and are shown in. Down comes Forster into the library, and is presented forthwith to "Professor Stow e. "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is at once referred to, and the talk goes on in that direction for some time. At last both Dickens^ and Felton fell into such a paroxysm of laughter at Forster's dogged determination to be complimentary to the world renowned novel that thev could 110 longer hold out and Forster, becoming almost insane with wonder at the hilarious conduct of his two visitors, Dickens revealed their wickedness, and a right jolly day the happv trio made of it. Talfourd informs 11s that Forster had become to Charles Lamb as one of his oldest companions, and that Marv also cherished a strong regard for him. It is surely a proof of his admirable qualities that the love of so many of England's best and greatest was secured to him by so lasting a tenure.^ lo have the friendship of Landor. Dickens and Proctor through long years to have Carlvle for a constant votary, and to be 'mourned by him with an abiding sorrow these are"no slight tributes to purity ol purpose.—[James T. 1' ields.
