Hoosler.
F.ODO tbo Saturday Indianapolis Herald. It seems not to be generally known bow the name "Hoosler" came to be applied to the Indfanian. The fdea ceenss to prevail, among outsiders, at least, thai it implies a regut&r backwoods green born, and this Idea no doubt, prevailed among tbe makers of Webster's Unadrldged, judging from tbe definition of the word.giveo ty them. Even the idiotic little fnipa who were born and reared in tbe "shanties" of the wilderness a thousand miles west of tbe Mississippi are taught by tbeir Hoosler parents to belitve that if a man Id from Indiana lie is thokind-of being above described. But why Indiana with her hundreds o» towns and cities, with her thousands of miles of railroad firming a network so fine that even quarter-section of territory can scarcely alip through, with a people whose energy and perservereuce bav« gained for them intellectual and material wealth comparatively unequaled, and being surroimdet! by cuch civilized communities as Chicago, St. Lou s, Louisville, Cincinnati! and Toledo, to say noihing of having the concentric city in her very center, should be especially the abode of "backwoods greenhorns," i9 an un•xplainable mystery. "All others to tbe contrary notwithstanding," the cmly reliable Hnurce of information gives this expluiiali'iu of the matter and r.one other: In the early days of Indiana, When it was but sparsely settled, he forests were literallv filled with £aiue, and there were nie:ii who made a bBisiness of hutitiuK, as there are men at the present day doing th9 flame thing in the boundless prairies of the Far West Ou a sultry day in the winter of J808, a party of in«n were out hunting in the woods of Jefferson county. Near nightfall the rain .began 'o pour in "torrents and while yet in the woods total darkness Closed apout them. They wandered about not knowing which way they were going or which way to go, when they discovered tu the distance a dim, twinkling light, as that of a little star in the further corner*)! the horizon. They followed its direction stumbling over fallen timber, wading streams, till they reached the object ta their pursuit, when, to tbeir delight, they discovered that it, was the light from a big log tire, nhitiing through the only window of asetUers log hut. They groped around in 4be darkness for some time aud much to their surprise failed to arou.»e the ferocious dog that was lying asleep in h!« kennel near by. Presently the in mat ee of the small cabip were aroused' from their slumber* by a hud knocking at their only door.
The man of the ^ouse arose from his bed, and answered, "Who's here?"
The .outsiders! replied, "Friends, out bird catching. Can we stay all •ight with you?"
The door wa9 opened and the stranger* entered. A bright, cheerful ire, from the iiugh pile of logs In oue end of the building, gave light and warmth to the room. Soou tbe lady of the house had the little, fequaw home-made table loaded with venihon, corn-bread and pure, sweet tnilk, and the strangers sat dmvn to a henrty repast. One of the stranger* said to the best: "What did you say when I knocked?" •'I said who's here?" "I thought you said Hooaier."
The bird-catchers left next morning af»er breakfast, but returned at Bight and hallooed, "Hoosnev•,•' ftnd from that time the Indiauiaiis Lave been called Hoosiers, a name that will Mick to them as long as Bucks eyes will to Ohioans.or Corucrackers to Kentucbians, or Suckers to lllinafcans, or Pukes to Missourlanv
