My regard for Mrs. Tilton was porl'ootly woll known to my family. WI1011 sorioiiH diflioultinssirung up in hor household, it was to my wil'o that sho rosortod lor couii8ol, and both of us, acting from sympathy, and, as it subsequently appeared, without lull knowledge, gavo unadvisoil counsol which tended to harm. I lmvo 110 doubt that Mr. Tilton found that his wife's confidence and relianoo upon my judgment had groatly inoroasod, while his intluonco nail diminished in consoquencoof tho marked changes in his religious and social viows, which were taking placo during tlioso yoars. Her mind was greatly oxercisod lost her children should bo harmed by tho views which sho doomed virtually false and dangerous. I was suddenly and rudely aroused to tho roality of Clio Impending danger by tho disclosure of domestic distress, of sickness porliap unto death, of tho likelihood of separation and tho scattoring of a lamily ovory member of which I had tenderly lovod. Tho elloct upon mo at tho diseovory of the state of Mr. Tilton's feelings and thocoudition of his family surpassed in sorrow and excitement anything I had ever experienced in my life. That my presonce, Inlluonoo and counsol had brought, to a boloved family sorrow and alienation gave, in my then stato of mind, a poignancy to my suft'taring which I hop no other man may ever foel.
EVKN TO 11K SUSPECTED
of havingoll'ored, under tho privileges of a peculiarly sucrod relation, an indo oorum to a wito and mother could not but dooply wound 0110 who is sensitive to tlio honor of womanhood. There were peculiar reasons for alarm in this case on other grounds, inasmuch as 1 was thon subject to certain malignant rumors, and a flagrant outbreak in this family would bring upon them an added injury derived from theseshamoless falsehoods. Believing at the time that my presence and counsels had tendod, howover unconsciously, to produce asocial catastrophe, represented as immlnont, I gave expression to iny toolings iu an interview with a mutual frioud, nbt in cold and cautions, selfdofending words, but eagorly taking tho blame upou myself, and pouring out my heart to my friend in the strongest language, overburdened with the exaggerations of impassioned sorrow. Had I boon the evil man Tilton now represents, I should have beou calmer and more prudent. It was my horror of this ovil imputed that llilod mo with a morbid intensity at tho very shadow of it. Not only was my friond allocted generously, but ho as sured mo that such expressions, if conveyed to Mr. Tilton, would soothe tho wounded feelings, allay his anger, und heal the whole trouble. Ho took down sonteuees and fragments of what I had boon saying to uso them as a mediator.
A FULL STATEMENT
of
the
k.r
circumstances undor which thi^
memorandum was made I shall give to tho committee. That these apologies wore moro than amplo to meet tho facts of the case is evident, in that they were accepted that our intercourse resumed its friendliness that Mr. Tilton subsequently ratified it in writing, and that ho has continued for four years and within two weeks to livo with his wife. 13 it conceivable,if the original charize had been what it is now allegod, that he would have condoned the offense, not only with tho mother of his children, but with him who he believed to have wronged them? The absurdity, as well its the falsity, of this story is apparent when it is considered that ho carried tho guilty secret of his wife's infidelity for six months, locked up In his own breast, and that thon he divulged it to me, only that there might be a reconciliation with me. Mr. Tilton has since, in every form of language, and to a multitude or wVtneBB®#,. orally, in written state
ments and in printed documents, declarod his faith in his wife's purity. After tho reconciliation of Mr. Tilton with mo, considerations of propriety and honor, demanded that the family trouble should bo kept in seclusion which domestic affairs have a right to claim as a sanctuary, and to that seclusion it was determined that itshould be conflnod. Kvery line and word of MY PRIVATE AND CONFIDKNTIAL LET
TERS
which have been published, is in harmony with the statement which I now make. My published correspondence on this subject comprises but two elements, viz.: tho expressions of my grief, and that of my desiro to shield the honor of a pure and innocent woman. 1 do not propose to analyze and contest, at this timo, the extraordinary paper of Mr. Tilton but there are two allegations which I cannot permit to pass without special notice. They refer to the only two incidents which Mr. Tilton pretends to have witnessed personally the one an alleged scene in my houso, while looking over engravings, and the other acharnber scene in his own house. His statements concerning these are absolutely false. Nothing of the kind over occurred, nor any semblance of any such thing. They are now brought to iny notice for the first time. To every st.itemont which connects mo -dishonestly with Mrs. Tilton, or which in any wise would impugn the honor and purity of this beloved Christian woman, I give tho most explicit, comprehensive and solemn denial.
Mavorick publishes this nolo and adds 111 the course of a short explanatory, addressed to Tilton and tho public, as one of his (Tilton's) staunch friends, loving and knowing him to bo a long-ubused man, and that lie still shrunk from hurting others,in order to shield himself, I resolved that this dolenso should bo published, and I published it. I did so wittiout his knowledge or eonsont, and I did right, and stand by the act as an act of justice to a man who has been wronged, and a community that has a ri^ht to know all tho facts,
A gentleman whose official business lias lod llim to receive and open much of IJonohor's correspondence said last ovening, in iteochor's lovo letters you would be surprised to know how foolishly .some women write to him. Kvory once in a whilo a woman gots a little crazy and writes to Borehor to tell him how much sho adores him. The letters used logo to tho Independent office, ami Tilton, under ordors from Heecher, opened them. Many of theui ho made copies of, and to-day has manuscripts and names, and copies of letters, all connected with respectable ladies who have wriLten to Bencher all about their love for him. Ho receives love letters by tho ream and cord, and tho joke of it is that as his wife takes care of all tho loiters that come to him, sho reads the lovo lettors before ho sees them. Mrs. Tilton's letters to Boocher woro very atlectionato and enthusiastic, and expressed deep pervading lovo in him. Mrs. Boecher read tliem all before ho saw them, and thoy are all in her possession. Now, when tho scandal was noised about, Mrs. 1 leecher looked up tho letters, alid at Mrs, Tilton's request, has preserved thom for her. You can't convince Mrs. lloeeher that hor husband is guilty ot anything that Tilton charges. She says that if all tho woman in creation woro to swear that Beocher had been unfaithful, sho would not believe them.

A Ver/Bad Smell.
From the New York World.
A very dead horse lies spread out, stiff, stark and cold on the Indiana Democratic platform. It is the Pendleton proposition to pay the five-twenty bonds in greenbacks. Some rascally Ohio politician dumped it there, we suppose, to destray Mr. Hendricks' chances for the Presidential nomination in 1876. That dead horse had better be carted off to the rendering vats as soon as convenient. The stench would not be good for the health of the Democratic party. 1
