From tho Indianapolis Journal. Wheu the report of the Committee on Resolutions was adopted yesterday by an unanimous vote, It was followed by threo cheers that almost ralseu the roof tlie Academy. It was Interesting at that point to note tho variety of hats that were thrown up. The first to appear were the stylish tiles from Laporte, St. Joseph and the other countfps these were followed by the well-known broad-brims of Wayne and the old •'Burnt District," the stylish ouUltB of Indianapolis and Terre Haute, the fashionable head-gear of Evatisvllle New Albany, and a general variety of hats from all parts of the State, meeting aud mlngliug with each other promiscuously in mid air. All localities and Bhades of opinion were represented. There were hats from the lake and hats from the river hats from the eastern line aud huts from the west hats from the oity and hats from tho oouutry hats of middlemen aud hats of grangers: straw hats, felt hats, soft hats anu stove-pipes hats with papers in and empty hats hats from every couuty and town In the State hats paiu for and hats bought ou credit were tossed, hoisted and thrown Into the air In one wild outburst of Republican enthusiasm. For a few minutes nothiug could be heard but cheers, aud nothing could be seen but huts.

ETCH (he Eclio had Heard of tho Cod. From the Bror.U Echo. The Joke of sending a man in searoh of Tom Collins, which assumed huge proportions in New York city, but which has been published in the papers and worn out, was, according to the Terre Haute Journal of Tuesday, perpetrated on a number of Innoceuts lu Terre naute, on Monday evening, and as a consequent a dozen or more men were seen hunting an lmagluary Tom Collins, with a view, (he being represented as a small man) of chastising him, for certain slanderous reports he was reported to have circulated about them. Tho whole thing was of .course a huge hoax, and was muoh enjoyed by those who were lu the seoret.

CHICAGO, June 20.—A Springfield special says the Supreme Court of Illinois has rendered a decision in tho case of Porter, et al. vs. the Rocklord, Rock Inland AHt. Louis Railroad Company, which involves the question of assessment by the Hoard of Equalization, of its capital stock. The decision sustains the Board of Kquallzatlon, and Is of great interest, as it virtually decides all similar cases brought before tbo Supreme Court. The decision concludos'an follows: Even from tho ap pellent's own showing it is difficult to conccivo that this asssesment does it injustice. Tho capital stock paid in is presumed to havo boen used in the corporate business, and this IndebtednoHss could have been lawfully creatod for no other than corporate purposes. Rut be this as it may, wo aro not convinced from tho allegations in tho bill, taken in connection with the accompanying oxhlbitlon, that tho valuation of tho appellant's proporty as mado by the Board of Equalization, Is so unjust or oppressive, as to boHiifllciont ovldonco formed on the part of tho Board, to justify us in restraining the collection of tho tax imposed upon it. Homo further objections are aro figured on the ground that tho cor-

fioratiAn

was not notified of tliemeet-

ng of tho Board of Equalization. Tho constitution does not provide that tho Legislature shall require that persons or corporations whose property shall bo assessed for taxation, shall be notified of the assessment, but in the case of tho Western Union Telegraph Company against Dieb, whero tho Board of Equalization assessed tho capital stock, tho court held that tho Board of Equalization is empowered to assess for taxation tho capital stock of such corporations as are creatod by or under the laws of Illinois, and that shares ol stock In such corporations are not liable to bo assossed for taxation, but persons residing in this State, and owning shares of stock in corporations created by tho laws of other Htates, must bo taxed only the vulue of sucu shares Ibut the assessment lor taxation of tho capital stock of the Western Union Tolograph Company In a foreign corporation, is unauthorized by law, and void, and that the collection of the tax levied upon it must be enjoined in tho various counties of tho State.

A collision occurred on tho Pittsburg A Castlo Shannon Railroad, this morning, in a tunnol, between two coal trains. Tho engineers of both trains woro dangerously Injured. 1)KN MOINHH, Juno 22.—Tho arrost of W. I). Stanclllf, horo, Saturday night, for tho murder of John Johnson, in this city a week ago. has proved a case ofmistakon identity, and a gross outrage upon Mr. Stancllir. Tho whole ohargo against him was that someone had taken to a washerwoman, last Monday, a bloody coat and shirt to wash, and from tho woman's discretion of tho man, tho police took Stanclill' to bo tho man, und arrested him, and tho woman ldontlfled 1 in as tho person, ho was arrested without a warrant, and consigned to )uil without a hoaring. Yesterday morninu:, a Mr. Eldridge, reading tho fact of Stancllfrs arrost, and the evldenco upon which ho wusarrostod, informed tho pollco that tho bloody clothes wore hlB, and tliat ho was the man who took thom to tho woman he further brought a dontlst to prove that tho blood upon tho clothos was from drawing teeth. The dontlst had drawn for him ou Monday, fourteen teeth, tho oporatlon being followed by profuse bleeding. Thereupon, the city maglstato discharged both parties. There Is much indignation here, over the reckless arrost of Mr. Stanclllf.

A Journalistic Jumble.

The Cincinnati Enquirer Revlows Deacon Bmltli. The Profcssar did not fail to give a recipe or sweeping rule for the editing of a truly good newspaper. He directs his pupils whenever they have "any doubts as to the propriety of printiug an article of a vulgar character to take It home and ask their wives." He adds: "I oheerfully adopt this advloe." There are several things to be said about this rule. It will first occur to all lovers eandor that Deacou Smith has beeu editing under false pretenses, lo, these many years. It Is Mrs. Smith that has beeu editiug the Gazette all this time. It is she who is the "truly good." And the Deacon has silently allowed himself to be praised from Greenland's ioy mountains to ludia's coral strand as the truly good editor, when in his own proper person he may be no better tnan the rest of us. This very fact will mar bis reputation for gooduess, for a truly good man will not hypocritically accept the praises due another. Certainly he would not steal the glory due his own wife. That blush of modesty which, so frequent aud prolonged have beeu the praises heaped upon him, has become habitual and is seen whether people are praising him or not is a sham. Nor is the advloe worthy of the teachcr we believed Mr. Smith to be. Some questions of casuistry arise under the rule. Suppose that the editor's wife happens, by nature or by long association with the editor, not to be possessed of the most refiued and sensitive delicacy. She might be more anxious than her husband to see the naughty things in priut, for the time comes in the life of some women when the maidenly blush positively refuses to appear when those uaughty things are spoken or printed. Then, how are editors to edit who have do wives? We ask this question with a painful personal solicitude, for we have been sitting at the feet of Deacon Smith to learu journalism of him, and there are some editors laboriously engaged in the manufacture of this very journal, the JBnquirer, who have no wives to flee to In an emergency like that whioh the Deaoon describes. So •ain are all thiugs here below that we may never be enabled to edit on the proper principle. Certainly the bachelor editor ought not^o read the naughty articles to the wife of somebody else, or to his daughter, so that Mr. Smith's rule has made the editorial profession doubly formlda-

It does not appear why Mr. Smith's address did not appear in the columns of his own paper. Did his wife or his wicked partners crowd it out?

Profanity Provocation. From the Indianapolis bentlnel.

1

The "Tom Collins" tidal wave bas reached and is spreading over the city. Originating in New York oity last April, the mythical personage has been the cause of more profanity to the square mile, or to every square, than even the currency question, Dio Lewis, or the heated term. At present several persons not posted, have joined, or should If they haven't, the "fool killers" army and recruits are rapidly being mustered in. Inquiries as to where Tom Collins can be found are now in order and until a few thousand people are "sold," they will have full sway.
