like a «en-

tence of death, for Mary was like life Itnelf to me. l)ut hearts are tough things after all. 1 left college In tho flush of my nineteenth year. I was no longer embarrassed. I had grown into a tall, slender stripling, with very good opinion of myself, both In general and particular. If I thought of Mary Moore, It was to think now I could diiTtzle and bewilder her with my good looks and wonderful attainments, and never thinking that she co-.ild dazzle me still more. I was a cox-oomb, I knew, but as youth and good looks have fled, I trust that I may bo believed when I sny that selfcontent has left me also.

An advantageous proposal was made me at this time, and, accepting It, 1 gavo up all Idea of a profession, and prepared to go to India. In my hurried visit home I saw nothing of Mary Moore. Hho had gone to a boarding school at some distance, ami was not expected homo until the following May. I uttered a sigh to tho memory of my little blue-eyed playmate, and then called myself a "man" again.

In a year, I thought, as tho vehicle whirled away trom our door, I will return, and if Mary Is as pretty as «he used to be, why, then, perhaps, I may marry her.

And thus I settled the future of a young lady whom I had not seen for lour years. I never thought of the possibilities of such as her refusing my oiler!

Hut now I know that had Mary met mo then she would have despised me. Perhaps In the Reented and atluole.l student she might have found plenty of sport but as for loving mo I should perhaps havo found myself mistaken. India was my salvation, not merely because of my success, but became my laborious industry had contracted the better man. When, at the end of three years, I prepared to return, I said nothing of tho reformation of myself, which 1 knew had taken place. They love me as I was, I murmured to myself, and they shall lind out for themselves whether I am better worth loving than formerly.

I picked up many a token from that land of romance and gold for the friends I hoped to meet. Tho gift of Mary Moore 11elected with a boating heart It was a ring of rough virgin gold with her name and own engraved lusldo—that was yet the little toy strangely thrilled me as I balanced It on my linger.

my all,

To the eyes of others It was but a plain circle, suggesting thoughts, perhaps, by its elegance, of the beautiful white hand that was to wear It, but not to me—how much was embodied there—all ee delights were hidden within that little ring of gold.

Tall, bearded aud bronzed, I knocked at my father'*' house. The lights 111 tho parlor window, and the biiin of conversation and cheerful laughter, showed me that company was assembled there. I hoped that sister Lizzie would como to the door, and I might greet my family when no strango eye was looking carelessly011

But a servant answered the sum moos. They were too merry in the parlor to heed tTie long absent oue who asked for admittance. A bitter thought ran through my mind as I heard the sound in tho parlor, and saw that half-suppressed smile on the servant's face.

I hesitated a moinout before aiaknu myself kuown or unking for any fWiiipgkJaZi' 5,-"

of my family. And whilo I stood si lent,"a stnuigo apparition eamo up before mo. I rom behind tho servant peered out a golden head, a tiny, delicate form and a sweet, childish face, with blue eyes, so like those of one who had brightened my boyhood, that I started with a sudden pain. "What Is your name, my pretty?" I Inquired, while the wondering ser vant held the door. "Mary Moore." "Aud what else?" I asked ly8he lifted her hands to shade her face—I had seen that very altitude In another, in my boyhood days, many and many a time—and answered, in a sweet, bird-like voice: "Mary Moore Cnester."

My heart sank down IIko lead. Mere was an end to all my bright dreams and hopes of my youth and manhood. Frank Chester, my boyish rival, who had tried in vain to usurp my plnco beside the girl, had succeeded at last, and had won her away from mo. This was their child, his child and Mary's.

I sank, body and soul, beneath this blow, and hiding my face in my hands, I loaned against tbo door, while my heart wept tears of blood. The little one gazed at me, greived and amazed, and put up her pretty lips as if about to cry, while the perplexed servant stepped into the parlor and called my sister out to see who It was that acted so strangely. I heard a light step, and a pleasant voice saying, "Do you wish to see my father, sir I looked up. There stood a pretty-faced maiden of about twenty, not so much changed from tho dear little sister I used to love so well. I looked at her a moment, and, stilling tho tempest of my heart by a mighty eM'ort, I opened my arms and said: "Lizzie, don't you know mo "Il.irry Oh, my brother Harry she cried, and threw herself Into my arms, and wept as if her heart would break.

I could not weep. I drew her gently into tho lighted parlor, and stood with her before them all.

There was a rush, and a cry of Joy, and then my father and mother sprung toward mo, and welcomed mo home with heart-felt tears.

Oil, strange and passing sweet is such a greeting to a worn traveler. And

Mary Moore,

|j)tter ntlll, I ueo mynelfat tho old Hchool 110U80, drawing my llttl* ehaiHu ti] to the door that Mary inl^lit rldo home. Many a healing have I gairod on nuoli ooeftHlons, for other hoys boHideH mo liked Iter, and Hhe, I fear,

to my heart, and grasped my dear old father's band, while Lizzie clung besido me, I felt that all was not lost and, although another had secured life's almomt choicest blessing, many a Joy remained for mo in tho dear sanctuary of homo.

There were four inmates of tbo room, who had risen on my sudden entrance. Oijo was tho blue-eyed child whom I had already seen, who now stood beside Frank (Muster, clinging to his bund. Near by stood Lizzie Moore, Mary's elder sister, and in a distant corner, to which slio had hurriedly retired, stood a tall, slender figure, half bidden by the heavy window curtains that fell to the floor.

When the llrst rapturous greeting was over, Lizzie led me forward with ti timid grace, and Frank Chester grasped my hand. "Welcome home, my boy!" he said, willi the loud, chccrfol tones I remembered

ho

well. "You havo

changed no that I would never havo kuown you hut no matter about that—your heart is in tho light place, I know." "How c.'ui you say he is changed V" said my mother, gently. "To be sure ho looks older and graver, and more lilce a man than when he went away, hut his eye and smilo tiro the same as ever. It is a heavy heart which changes him. He is my boy still." "Aye, mother," I answered sadly, "T tun your hoy still."

Heaven hrlp me! At that moment I felt 11ko little boy, and it would havo boon a blessed relief to havo wept upon her breast as I bad dono In my Infancy. But I kept down tho tremor of my lips, and answered quietly, us I looked Into his full, handsome face: "You havo changed too, Frank, but 1 think for tho better." "Oh, yes—thank you for the compliment," he answered with a nearly laugh. "My wife tells mo I grow handsomer every day."

His wlfo Could I near that name and keep silfc|it "And havo yon neen m"y~ little girl ho udded, lifting tho lufant in his arms, and kissing her crimsoned cheek. "I tell you, Harry, there is no such other In tho world. Don't you think slio looks very much like her mother used to?" "Very much," I faltered. "Hallo I" cried Frank, with a suddenness that made mo start violently, "I have forgotten to introduco you to my wife I believe you and sho used to bo pl'ymates in your young days—yes, Hurry." and he slapped me on the back—"for tho sako of old times, and because you weronotut the wedding, I will let you kiss her once, but mind, old fellow, you ore never to repeat the ceremony. Come, hero sho is. I for one want to see how you will manage thoso ferocious moustaches of yours In the operation."

Ho pushed Lizzie, laughing and blushing toward mo. A gleam of light and hope, almost too dazzling to bear, came over me, and before I thought I cried out, "Not Mary

I must have betrayed my secret to every one in tbo room. 13ut nothing was said even Frank, in general so obtuse, was this time silent. I kissed tho fair cheek of the young wife, and hurried to the silent ilgure looking out of the window. "Mary—Mary Moore!" I said In a low, eager tone, "havo y.ou no welcome for tho wanderer

Hho turned, and laid her hand In mine aud said, hurriedly "I am very glad to see you here again, Harry."

Himplo words, and yet how happy they made mo. I would not have yielded her up at that moment for an Ktiiperoi's crown. For there was a happy homo group and the dear home fireside, with sweet Mary Moore. 'J ho eyes Iliad dreamed of dny and ni^ht were falling beneath tbo ardent gnvse of mine, and tbo. sweet face I had so long prayed to see

wiib

there beside me. I know not

the moaning of h&ppinees until that moment. Many years have passed since that happy night, and the hair that was glossy is fast turning gray. I am now an old man, and can look back to a happy, ftml I hope, a well spent life. And yet, sweet as it has been, I would not recall nninglu day, fm the lovo that mado uiy manhood so bright, sliino9 also upon my white hairs. ii

An old man can this lie so? At heart I am as young as ever. And Mary, with her bright hair parted smoothly from a brow that lias a slight furrow Us If, Is still the Mary of other days. To me she oun hever grow old orjehanged. The heart that held her in Infancy and sheltered her in the Hush and beauty of womanhood, can never cast her out till llfo cease to warm it.
