Steal Filings.
Itoal bawl dressos—baby elotlios. Now we are to be afflicted with the "voto nocktio."
Farmers gather what thoy sow, whilo soatnHtressoB sew what they gather. AMiss Lovpjoy, of Wisconsin, is now pushing her fourth broach of promise suit.
The only thing we have really to be afraid of is, fearing any tiling more than Cod. "A wooden oath," is what llood callod the slumming of a door by an angry person. "All ye blackguards that isn't law* yers, lavo the court," yolled tho crier ol'an Hibernian court.
Labor is ennobling, but many consider that a very little of it will answer tho purpose.
A dog was soon walking tho streots of New JJodford, tho other day, with a liglitod cigar in his mouth.
A boy in Pittsburg gavo old John Robinson's lion a poanitt. The lion thanked him by swallowing his arm. "I am dying for love," said a melancholy young man, as he put the coalblack fluid upon his moustache.
A»Troy man has the right to jerk another man out of his pew if he iluds him there and is big enough to do it.
Arrival of the nightingale—That is a ploaslng but injudiciously worded fact: tho nightingale has not a rival.
The refluemont that carries us away from our fellow creatures is too nice for this world, and Is not profitable.
Milwaukoe Sentinel A Boston woman who objects to nude statuary has ordered a figure of Von us cut out of dressod marble.
A voracious dog, in Troy, New York, has swallowed his master's false toeth, and both dog and man are suffering from disordered stomachs.
A number of fanoy slippers and ladies' line robes, seut to the Massachusetts suflorers, have been laid aside as too elegant for present use.
Datroit's flesh is creeping at tho voice of a ghost whioh emits a cry like that which ootnes from a man whose foot gets under an omnibus wheel. "This summer, ladies are going to dross thoir hair as they did threo hundred years ago," says an oxChuogo. This makes some of them pretty old.
A Savannah daucing master has entered suit against the Savannah Sk Ida way R.tilroad for one hundred dollars damage for the failure of the train' to take him to his dancing class on time.
Boston Post: Gentlemou who liaveu't tho nocessary means for visiting a fushionable rosort, this summer, can purchaso a Saratoga (.runk iu which to recreate themsolves.
It is proposed to make stage scenery fire proof, oy using wiro cloth instead of canvass, and iron frames intoad of the wooden onos now employed.
Thus the Boulder, Col., Eagle records ploaaaut little domestic Incident at tho house Of a subscriber: "ft. J. llall smokes terrible cheroots and wears his pants in his boots, beeauso ho's got a brand new baby."
A San Frunclscoan came homo from business, and finding his wife housecleaning, addod to her labors by cutting his throat on the cloan kitchen iloor. So mo men have no feeling for thoir wivos.
It was Sir Richard Steele that said to a certain groat man whom he wishod to invite, "If, Sir, you ever como within a mile of my house, I hope you will stop there." $
From tbe IndianapolisSeutluel. The Plnckj Warden.
Colonel Shuler, warden of the Southern prison, was is the city yesterday ou a mission of mercy. Thocolotcd trusty man who was shot in the mouth at Uiu late fraoas in tho prison is recovering, and tb« warden was in the city to tile a petition ith Governor Hendricks for the pardon of the negro. By tho way,, it was rather pleasant than otherwiso to look upon the fearless man who made such marvefbuff escxpe from a shower of bullets. In conversation, Col. Shuler stated that the desperado, Applogate. know what to expect, and that he would be captured, The warden also knew his man. his desperate cliaruoter, and tho tlonalsh delight ho would take in any crime, however henious. Colonel
Shuler was wholly unarmed, as usual and Applegate bad a good revolver, with which he kept peppering away as the warden advanced point blank upon the inutzle. One ball grazod the top of his head, which brought stars to view, and produced a sensation as if the top of his head was gone another grazea his log, cutting the skin, and still auother passed inside tho clothing near his side. But atuid these hair-breadth escapes the Colonel pressod on and captured his man, who now lies in a safe situation. He respects the Warden even if he does not love his chairs. The moral sentiment In the prison is so strong against the fellows who tried to get away and kill the keeper, that thoy would readilv aid in their puuiahmeut if permitted.
How Can Grant Tell I
From the Table-talk of the Washington Capital. -vP The walls of the Executive Mansion have been known these many years to be the thickest, deadest walls everbulit. No murmer of popular discontent, no clamor abroad, no cry of distress ever penetrates to the interior. There the incumbent Bits, surrounded by parasites and sycophantic followers, fed on flattery, totally unconscious of the storms without.
Martin Van Buren was one of the ablest politicians ever elected President. He was turned out by a popular storm that swept over the land destroying everything green save Dick Johnson. Haid John Van Buren once: "We did not know what was going on outside, but sat serene within until the election returns from New York told us the hour ot retiring." If the clear-headed reader of the popular mind, Martin Van Buren, could thus be deceived, what are we to expect of Ulysses? This gentleman has not only the quality of dullness, but he adds to it the leasing one of personal ugliness. A ull dog is not an agreeable animal fo approach, but a President who has the sullen ferocity of that animal is a fearful creature to contemplate. His boldest supporter in the Senate, O. P. Morton, appioaches him in fear, and speaks in his presence with bated breath. O. P. knows that as iu the wilderness this man, who will fight, had at his back a hundred aud fifty thousand veterans, so now he has twice that number behind him ready to do his biddiug so this Diable Boileux tells him no truths, for truths are disagreeable—nor does any other muii.
A correspondent of the Richmond Enquirer tells the following Htory re peeling a BaptiHt preach of strong common sense, but very rough-hewn theology, who wws widely known and much liked and respected in (SotitliHlde Virginia, many yeais ago
The old parson wus preaching very nrnestly about the certainty and (lie terrible nature and degree of the miseries of the damned, and when he had succeeded in working up himself and his awe-struck audirtory iuto a high degree of excitement nd the hitter iuto terrified admira tion of his harrowing detail of liorrol*, he capped the climax after this fashion "My frieads, you all know Ma). Clarke's furiface you have seen it often, how the white-hot coals just melt up the iron thrown in to It like as If'twas snow. Well, If you'd take a dinner out of hell and throw him into Mnj. Clarke's furnace, he'd have an agur in two minutes."
A Heolcli parish otice had for minister a good man remarkable for his benevolent disposition. Meeting one of it is parishioners one day he said: "Jeanie, what way do I never see you at the kirk?" "Weel, sir," said Jeanie, "to be plain wi' ye, I haena a pair o' shoon to gang wi.' "A pair o' shoon, Jeanie! Jeanie, I'll not let ye stay at hauio for that what would a pair cost?" "Aboot four shilling, sir." Putting his hand into his pocket, he gave Jeanie the money and went ills way. Some tinio after, nueliin her a^ain, he said "Dear me, Jeanie, I've never seen ye in the kirk yet what way is that?" "Wcel, sir," said Jennie, "to he plain wi'ye, when the weather in fuid, and I hae the time, I prefer gaun toDumfarlin' to hear Mr, Gillespie." "Oh, indeed, Jeauie, lass, that's tho way o't is it? Ye might hae gi'en mo tho first day the shoon ny way, d'ye no think?'
Our Worthy President. From tho Cincinnati Commercial. The llonton Advortiser refers to the C'hiss case, saying: "Beforo it could bo known whether his revelations wore truo or false, bo ibro tho committeo could get at tho papers still in his ollico, the Prelsldont, at the request of the incriminated persous, removed Cluss from office! Tho proceeding is ono of the strangest im aginable. The witnoss no longer has power over tho papers upon which ho rolios to substantiate his word. They pass under the control of tho persons most interested to suppress them. This is an instanco of removing an ofllcer while ho was 'under lire'—with a vengeance."
Tho incidont simply shows that the President bolongs to tho District ring and is ono of the subordinates of Boss Shopherd in District affairs. The fact Is plain—the organs can make tho most of It. Colorado Excursions—Go West
