THE

tricks of modem sharpers and

"confidence men" are innumerable, and, considering the spread of information and intelligence, the number of their victims incredible. A favorite swindling plan is to send lithographed circulars all over the country, in which the writer, after introducing himself as a very skillful engraver, who has been in the employ of the Government for several years, exhorting the receiver to secrecy, and threatening dreadful things if he reveals what is told, offers to sell him a package of counterfeit money at a low price. This he represents to be so skillfully executed that no difficulty will be found in passing it. Should the recipient of this precious epistle swallow the bait, he will receive in exchange for his money, a package of sawdust. Conscious that any exposure will criminate himself, he generally keeps quiet about the matter, and thus the sharper escapes. A poor and credulous man, of this city, has just been victimized by this trick, and, in his wrath, exposed his own wickedness. These swindlers are very glad to get hold of the circulars of schools and colleges, and taking from thence the pupils' names, send copies of their circulars to them. In some institutions of our State scarcely a day passes during which several of these circulars are not received. Those in authority, who have charge of the distribution of the .mail in some institutions, learn to recognize them, however, and in order to prevent the opportunity for temptation, quietly put them into the waste basket.

Certainly some means of detecting and punishing these swindlers, can be found, and ought to be put into execution.

THE

"Journal" doubtless means to be a

faithful sentinel, but it sometimes neglects an imperative public duty. For instance, while it has been snapping, snarling, growling and barking at the Board of Health because the Board permitted small-pox infection to be brought to this city on some of our many lines of railway, another disease has been raging and still rages, with unremitting virulence in all parts of the city the Board does nothing to stay its devastating march, and the Bourbon organ is silent!. This mala^ dy, which defies medical skill and strikes terror to the hearts of all the doctors of all the schools, is called

manifests its hideous presence in various sliapeB and under an almost infinite variety of circumstances. Some of its unhappy vie. tims may be met on the streets. Observe them carefully and you will see that, the fell destroyer lias struck them down low they are "out at the toe." Another class are "out at the elbow a more numerous and wretched crowd are "out of money" or "out of credit." And the worst afllicted of all are "out of office." In these, the disease is complicated with another malady called "sorehead," and such patients are considered incurable. The pest house is full of 'em. Let the Terre Haute section of the A. A. A. S. be called together without delay let the "Journal" sound the alarm let the Board of Health be castigated with the lash of public indignation, for there is not a square in all the city where "the outs" does not rage.

ghost of the departed and unla-

mented Velocipede occasionally haunts unfrequented streets of the city, apparently loth to quit the scene of its great renown. Here, but a few short years ago, "surrounded by all that exalts and embellishes civilized life," "under the same sun that shines for us," "beneath the same moon that smiles for us"—here flourished a noble generation of the Velocipede. Who, "while memory holds her seat in this distracted globe,"—who, while the gentle river gurgles on its muddy way toward the far-off sea—who, while "our beautiful Prairie City" boasts of the handsomest girls and the eheapest coal in America—who, in short, while aught of our past, present or prospective glory remains, can forget the Velocipede? Did not church elders much affect it? Did not candidate! try to ride into ollicej upon its narrow, shining back? Did not pious people wish there was no sin in swearing, when it knocked them into the gutter? And did not our municipal Congress meet in solemn session to frame statutes for the Velocipede's government? This was as but yesterday. Today only a solitary ghost of the tribe is left to tell that such a race ever existed. It is~a solemn and forcible illustration of the transitory nature of all earthly things.

A SPECIMEN of coal entirely suitable for the manufacture of gas—indeed an

excellent quality of gas coal—has been •hown us by a gentleman who states that it came from a vein on the farm of Jacob Beard, in Adams township, five miles from Rockville and the same distance from Catlin Station. There is said to be an immenso quantity of this valuable mineral product underlying the farms of Mr. Beard and his neighbors. Two banks half iv mile apart, have already been opened and found to be exactly alike. General Carrington inspected these banks, on Thursday, and took specimens to carry to New York. It can be put on the cars r.t Rockville at ten cents a bushel. The •ame coal is very valuable for grates, furnaces and heating purposes generally.

The Canal.

The people of Terre Haute are agitating the matter of putting the canal into navigable condition from that point to Montezuma, with the view of obtaining cheap coal. It is estimated that twenty thousand dollars will do it. We have no data as to what amount will be required to put the canal in navigable trim from Lafayette to Montezuma, or even to Coal Creek, the nearest point to the coal fields, but are of the opinion that forty or fifty thousand dollars would be sufficient. 'We must not allow Terre Haute to get ahead of us. Now is the time to strike while he iron is hot.—Lafciyetlc

Speaker of the House of Representatives, told the citizens of Greencastle all about his "Observations in Europe," at Female College Chapel, Friday evening. Mr. Mack is a prominent candidate before the Democratic convention of his district for the Congressional race. It is pleasant to hear a politician occasionally talk about something else than politics, as he did on Friday evening. He seems to have had his eyes open while abroad.—Gircncastle

Fearful Explosion at Sea

March "28.—The bark

Nimrod, was burned, off Bermuda, on the 19th inst. Of 17 persons on board, only 10 were saved. The vessel was loaded with naptha and kerosene, and an explosion from some unknown cause took place in the hold behind the main hatch. It is believed that the captain's wife, and daughter, a young girl, were in the cabin at the time of the explosion. When the fire was seen from the harbor of Bermuda, it was too late to render assistance.

Wednes

day night, the 20th inst., in McCracken County, four men, named Bird Jackson, Billy C'oe, R. P. Wetherford, and James Vaughn, went to the house of a peaceable, respectable farmer, named Shelton, forced him to swallow an opiate, and left him lying insensible in the yard, while the four entered the house, and attacked Shelton's wife and daughter, the latter aged fifteen years. The women resisted, and were knocked down with the butts of the ruffians' pistols. The daughter was knocked down three times, and finally both were tied down, and ravished by the villains repeatedly during th'e night.

Jackson and Coe were captured, and lodged in jail at Clinton. The rest will probably soon be taken, as the exasper ated neighbors are prosecuting a vigorous search for them.

Republican State Convention, held in this city to select delegates to the National Republican Convention at Philadelphia was one of the largest and most enthusi astic conventions ever held in the State,

The delegates seleted were Gen. G. Dodge, A. Clark, J. M. Card and W. H, Severs from'the State at large, and three from each Congresseianal district consist ing of, 1st district, C. W. Stagle, Norman Ev« erson, S. M. Clark. 2d district, John Green, Sylvanus Yates and S. L. Baker. 3d district, W. M. Ilandever. Andrew Feet and August Beadle. 4th district, H. J. Littell, H. S. Wins' low, and General J. B. Drake, of Appanooso. 5th dsstrict, J. S. Mclntyre, Col. W, S. Dungan, and Major Anderson.

Gtii district, Isaac Pendleton, L. Williams, and P. C. Conger". Three alternates were also selected from each Congressional district.

The following resolutions were adopted with but one or two dissenting votes: Resolved, That we heartily endorse the Administration of U. S. Grant in the en forcement of the laws, faithful collection of revenue, reduction of the public debt and restoration of National credit, and th4t we believe, with him, that a PresL dent should have no policy to enforce against the will of the people and our delegates to the National Convention are hereby instructed to vote for, and use their most earnest endeavors to secure his renomination.

Resolved. That recognizing in James F. Wilson, our eminent citizen of Iowa, all the qualifications of an able, upright and pure minded statesman, we hereby instruct the delegates selected by this Convention to vote for his nomination for the Vice Presidency, and to exert every just effort to secure it.
