Alsace and Lorraine.
Among the certain demands which will be made upon France by the victorious Prussians, the cession of Alsace and Lorraine is the firet in order and in importance. To Germany they will form a grand foothold beyond the Rhine, and an ugly entering wedge into France—the nearest point of Lorraine being not more hundred nailer from Paris, coterminous with Belgium, Ltucemhourg and Switzerland. Tbey form a fertile and picturesque country, and, if Prussia i3 magnanimous as to the other stipulations, their pos-se-don would go far to compensate her. Like many frontier provinces, they have had a curious problem of nationality. They are mixed of French and German. Aba co-—the ICI-ass c\ the Germans—was long a German province and ever since its cession to Fiance, in the seventeenth ce liury, it h-n rctainc-d its old customs and cos!time', arid, in a great degree, the German

A .lltinler at Laurel, Indiana. Captain John Colter, a prominent distiller of the Whitewater Valley, tdiol and mortally wounded Alonzo Auger, on the afternoon of the 3d instant. The paiticulars, as near as we can learn, are as follows: A dillicuIty occurred between the parties on the previous night over a game of cards, and Auger used language to Colter which he (Colter) considered insulting. On Friday, the day on which the murder was committed, at about 4 o'clock in the afternoon, Captain Colter walked down Pearl street and entered David McCarthy's drinking saloon. Mr. Auger was in tiie saloon, and when Colter came in, he turned logo out. Colter called him back and asked him what he proposed to do about the insult he had offered him 011 the preceding night. A11 angry dispute arose, the lie passed, and Colter drew a revolver and iired I've shots at Auger. Three of the bails took effect, one entering the brc -t, one the abdomen, and one breaking ms right arm. He died at about 11 o'clock on the Saturday night following. Deceased, who was a butcher by trade, was a single man about twenty-four years of ago. Captain Colter, who is about fifty years of has heretofore been one of the leading business men of the valley. Both of the parties were residents of Laurel. Colter is now under arrest.— Cor. Vincinnuli Commercial.
