With a cleai and firm he told the jury how, at the end of the late war, he found himself alone in the world, without home or fam ily how he made his way into '.he woods, built a cabin and labored to cli'ar off and secure a homestead that the complainant lived on the east and the complainant's father on the west side of him that the complainant had tried to hire hira to leave that failing in tliat he had threatened him and tried to drive him off that on the morning in question he was going to work when the complainant came up and demanded his axe, then un dertook to take it that in the struggle he fell and the complainant fell on top of him and struck his (complainant's) head against the end of a knot, and the bloo 1 flowed freely that when complainant found he could not. get the axe he left •ind went up the road on a run, bleeding he went. "And this," said the old ^mnn, "is God's truth." Here the old he ro pulled up his pantaloons and laid bare an ugly gun-shot wound, wheie the heel cord of liis left leg had been severed by a minie ball that had went crashing through the bones below tin: knee "That," said he, "was made by the rebels at Gettysburg, and just at the close of the var I received this." The jury looked and found where a shell had shattered his right shoulder and left scars nearly as large as the head of the young scamp who had undertaken to swear the old hero to Jackson. The honest, manly state mcnt carried conviction to the jury, and they promptly returned a verdict of not guilty, and hearty cheers went up for the old patriot, the complainant having long before fled in terror from the court room

OUR NKVV YEAR'S GREETING

we glance hack over the work accomplished in seven short months, we are sure our customer* will nut wonder at our feeling a little elated at our unusual, but not to u, unexpected succii/M. Our fir^t visit to Terre Ilrute convinced us that here, of all the cities in this State, was most needed a reform in the vicious system upen which the Dry Good* business was being conducted. The motto of thi* sstern was, ''.Secure the very largest profit possible on every dollar's worth of goods sold." We believed a change was needed and that the people would generously support any firm who, disregarding the machinations of the old high-priced stores, would dare to write over their doors this opposite motto, '"Sell every dollar's worth of goods at the smallest possible profit consistent with safe business principles." In pursuance of this idea we marked out our course and have pursued it without fear or favor. We expected opposition, for we had been informed of the plans laid for ourdiscomfiture. We were not even sure that this opposition might not take the form of person il violence, so when the high-priced-stores took this \Vav to bolster up their failing fortunes, we wore hardly disappointed.

OU\i'"SUCCESS HAS BEEN UNPARALLELED!

At one bound our .-lore took its position at the head of the Dry Goods Trade of Terre Haute. We had not mistaken popular sentiment. Congratulatory and en couraging messages and \ord.s came to us from every quarter, one and all biddingy us go forward and never for a moment to doubt the earnest sympathy and hearty good will of the Kie.it masses of the people.

A new and still greater reduction in our prices is

Th TaiBtrsic has been, is, and must be a Cealoas advocate of Protection to Home Industry. Regarding ibitual idleness as the greatest foe to human progress, the bane of human happiness, we seek to win our countrymen in masses from the ensnaring lures of speculation, nf Traffic, and of always overcrowded Professions, to the tranquil paths of Productive Industry. We would gladly deplete our over-crowded cities, where thousands vainly jostle and crowd in misguided quest of "Something to Do," to cover praicict and plains with colonics absorbed in Agriculture, Mechanics and Manufactures, and con stantly projecting Into tho blank, void wil derness the homes and the works of civili'ccl Man. Holding the Protection of Homo In-dustry-by discriminating duties on imported Wtircs nnd Fahrics essential to the rapid, beneficent diffusion of Produetton in all its phages and departments, and so to the instruction of onr people in all the gainful arts of Peace, waurce our countrymen to adhere to and uphold that policy in undonbting faith that the true interest, not of a class or a section, but of each section and every useful class, is thereby subserved and promoted. sell TIM WEEKLY to Clubs for less than its value in dwellings for waste paper and, though its subscription is already very large, wc believe that a Half Million more farmers will take it'whenever ft shall bo commended tfi their attention. We ask our friends everywhere to aid us in commending it.
