THE.fmcceroful completion of the Mont £.cnis funnel will direct public attention •lore than ever before to that now being teadily drilled in the we-tcrri part of Mas :aelinsetts. and known a1? the ifoosao. jl'hc mountains through which it is slow-|t!-hin'* its way are a disconnected range of the great Green Mountain chain, which ftretches from Canada to Connectic-

ac!er and grandeur of Jorm to there lesser head?. The namsj
comes from the. Hirer, which was called

The tunnel of the llooghc will be abut a of nearly live miles from east in west, and a is tKiw being worked by three frnnt.,a a* four difioren! points, day and ni^ht. The air is eonvei ed in an iron pipe, which is laid about two fc-et beneath the rail track. The tunnel on this side is opened, and the rails laid down to the extent of a mile and a half, but the work is not completed to that length. The porta! is twenty feet in height, and twenty-four feet in width which will be the width arid height of the en'ire tunnel when completed— a half mile of that size, with its arched, rockv roof mid sides, is tinished.
At this point, the half-mile limit, and also at the extreme end of the work, where ihe virgin soil is being blasted, gangs of men are employed night and day at labor. Three hundred and sixty men are employed at this side of Ihe mountain, two hundred at the west opening on the opposite side, and eighty-five at Ihe shaft on the summit. These men
at the three different locations woi on the eight hour system, going in to labor and coming out three limes in the fwen-Lv-fo :r hours. The wages are from Sti to $3 per day for each man, tlio-e thai do the blasting receiving the nio^t pay.
As a ri'i't'M wi inslaiti-o ol the tne.inneis with which the Iventuekv LetrislaItire ha« been pursuing the colored race, and as an instance, also, of I he iinmmlllitli'mnl laws which, if not repealed, must be nullified by the courts, the Loui-ville Commercial mentions the sixth sec ion of the homestead exemption law of February 10, 1SG0. After providing that the dwelling-house of every head of a family Khali, to the extent of one ihou-and dollars in value, be exempt from all execution and from all compulsory process for Ihe payment of debt and dial even a mortgage upon it, unless a debtor's wife j.nns in it, shall not be enforced, the sixth fiCfition limits all the benefits of (lie act to
men. ihe wise and kind-hearted ti enehiut-ni. It lias a littndied and law in -liters perhaps only made the law to protect white land holders against suits by colored farm hands for wages. I nder no ciieuni-'taiiees were colored folks to be encouraged in the purchase of land.-.
Tin-: Chicago Republican chiims that the Western News Company of that citv is fairly entitled to divide ihe honors of the "I leal hen Cl.inee" with III.I:T HAUTE. Ihe illustrations of those popular verses, published by Mr. WALSH'S great estab lishinent, have tickled the public palate beyond anything of the kind ever attempted. The lithographing is verv line, and die entire work is done in as good shape as could have been produced in Ne.v York, we veil.lire to say. The demand for it is far beyond even WALSH'S power to supply. Orders come in eve-y day from Boston, New York, Philadelphia mid other K,astern cities. Ihe Hon St'iit'vi.Ki: Coi.rvx sent for two a lew days ago—one for himself—more likely for the delectation if Sfiu"vt,i- i:, jr.— and the other for the lion. '/,\ru ('HANDLE!.', whose appreciation of the humor oils is very keen. I'.ititr II tiiTr, owes as lunch to the Western News eotnpanv as .DICKENS owed to Citt iKSUANK.
Tin-: Philadelphia hujiriitr thinks that if the commissioners whom il is proposed to scud to Sun Domingo can find the real sentiments Whe people of that is tJ.ey will be far more astute than any Americans now in San Domingo.— One half of our shrewd countrymen send word thai Ihe .minicans are anxious 10 nt once incorporate themselves with the 1 nited Stales 011 any terms or 110 lerms at all while the other half insist thai the islanders are overwhelmingly opposed to cedinsr one inch of territory to our government, and tint nothing but the dread of punishment from prevents them from giving unmistakable expression to their real feelings. How the propi-ed commissioners are going to discover the real state of a flairs remains to be seen.— They will probably return home with majority and minority reports ami leave the real issue in as much uncertainly as it is now. This annexation business always wa- tro'iihlesome in all nitions and in all places._
