authoritatively, the report from Washington that Senator Morton had expressed himself as in favor of a tariff' for protection, and opposed to a reduction of taxes, the funding of the public debt, and the bill providing for the equalization of the currency, thus giving the West and South their proper proportion of circulation.
WE HAVE another murder to record this morning: Thomas Ball was killed by Willliam Thomas in Union townshij Vanderburg county, on Tuesday. Thomas owed Ball four dollars. In a quarrel about the payment of this debt, Ball was struck by Thomas with a club on the head, inflicting injuries from which he died in two hours. The murderer is in jail. The victim was a well-to-do farmer and has left a family. —————

MEMPHIS, Dec. 'J.—Dispatches from Mississippi claim the State for Alcorn by twenty thousand.
NEW ORLEANS, Dec. 2.—Returns from Mississippi givethe following majorities lor Alcorn: Wilkinson county, 2,000 Noxubee, 2,o71 Jefferson, 1,513 Yazoo, 2,000 Marion, 2,000 Adams, 2,475 Warren, 3.703 Capiola, Claiborne 1,053 Marshall, (00 Hinds, 1,500 Lowndes, 3,500 Loiulerdale, 572 Clark, -100 a gain in 13 counties of more than 13,000 over last year's Radical vote.

MEMPHIS, Dee. 2.—The Avalanche's Jackson, Miss., special to-night says Alcorn's majority in thccounties from which eturns have been received is 32,(H)2, gain for Radicals in the same counties of 27,883. No disturbances have occurred, cvervthing 'extremely (piiet,but the result astonishes the natives.

The State Claimed for Hamilton by
20,000.
GAI.VESTON, Dec. 1.—The toial vote here for two days is 1,291. As far as heard from the election throughout the State is passing off quietly.
In Waco county the vote in two days reaches '.t-10, in MeClellan county the colored majority is 200, in Falls countv the voters are splitting, but Davis is probably ahead.
Registration is not yet completed in Navarro county, consequently no election is going on there.
In Austin, llays. Williamson and Travis counties all the whites and many colored voters are voting for Hamilton. It is estimated the majority for the three counties is 3,500. llaynes is certainly leeted to Congress.
Hamilton's friends claim the State bv 30.000. IIorsTox, Dee. 1.—The vote here in two days is 1.500. It is estimated that Hamilton will carry the State by 20,000.
In Jefferson the eleciion is progressing quietly, the colored voters being largely in the majority.
GREAT FIRE IN GALVESTON
Four Entire Blocks and ThreeFourths of two Others Consumed.
GALVESTON, TEXAS, Dec. 3.—A fire occurred this morning consuming four entire blocks and three-fourths of two other blocks. The fire originated in the clothing establishment of Cohen Bros., corner of Strand a"d Fremont streets. A high northwest wind swept the flames in a southwesterly direction, burning three blocks on Fremont street and Post Office streets, and three blocks between Mechanics' and Church, and West and 24th streets, with the exception of the stores of T. Taxes are due on and after the 15th day of October, and if not paid before tho third Monday in April following,ten per cent, penalty is added after which the Treasurer or his Deputy is required to call upon every delinquent tax-payer in his county and demand the delinquent taxes, and if necessary to seize and sell property to make the same with constnblo's fees.
Delinquent lands are advertised on or about tho first Monday in January and sold on the first Monday in February of each year.
The Treasurer is responsible for tho taxes thathe could have collected: therefore taxpayers ought to remember that their taxes must be paid every year.
