CAPT. C. C. GENUNG, engineer for the Evansville and Crawfordsville railroad, last week completed an inspection of al the bridges and culverts on the Evansville and Crawfordsville railroad its entire length, and returned to the city on Saturday night. We learn that the bridges and culverts are all in an excellent condition at the present time, safe and sound. It is a custom to have the bridges on this road inspected by a competent man at least twice a year, and on the occasion of such visits of the inspector, all faulty timbers are ordered to be removed at once. This is one of the reasons that the Evansville and Crawfordsville railroad has so few accidents. Another is that only careful engineers and conductors are employed. This will be pleasing intelligence to travelers in this day of railroad and steamboat accidents. To travel on a railroad without fear of being "dumped" over the bank, or of having the engine blow you into the middle of the next century, is a great comfort—
<Evansville Courier>.
THK FAXTIU who propose to furnish
the meant and build the proposed Indiana
& Illinois Central Bailway leading from
Indianapolis to Decatur, are Messrs.
CHAMPLIK & LAZAK. Their proposition is
to take tbaroad as it stands and complete
and own it, the company to turn over to
them the real estate, notes and all other
assets it baa, estimated at about $200,000,
and the counties or citizens along the
line to raise a bonus of $700,000, in ad
dition, to be paid them on completion of
the road. The counties through which
the road passSs in Illinois, It is under
stood, have arranged for their pro rata of
the proposed bonus. It remains to be
seen whether Parke, Putnam, Hendricks
and Marion, in this State, will likewise
do so, and sixty days are given them in
which to determine the question. As the
matter now sUndt, it does not promise a
successful issue.
THE STAT* FAIR.—By yesterday's In
dianapolis Sentinel we learn that the Sev.
enteenth Indiana State Fair, which com
menced yesterday, starts out with prom
ise of much greater success than any pre.
vious exhibition has ever enjoyed. The
importance of these annual displays is
gradually becoming appreciated by the
people, and the liberal and enterprising
management of the Board of Agriculture
has done much to popularize them. This
is particularly noticeable this year, since
the system of charging entry fees has
been done away with, and by the reduc
tion of premiums for trotting, no particu"
'ar featureof the fair attracts attention to
Ifce exclusion of others. The Board have
spared no pains in fitting up the grounds,
and under the direction of Mr. Sullivan,
the Superintendent, they have been sub
stantially improved in various ways.
The number of entries made up to
yesterday morniitg is unequaled in the
history of our fairs, and the loiters re
questing rooip, or notifying the Sepretary
that articles would be exhibited, indicate
that the number made will be greatly in
excess of any previom exhibition. Nowj

WORCESTER, MASS., Sept. 28—The State Labor Reform Convention waj atr tended by 380 delegates representing all the counties except Dukes and Nantucket.
