DEATH OF JOHN RISLEY—HE CONFESSES THE MURDER OF LUCAS.—From the Louisville <Courier-Journal> we learn that John Risley, who went to the Southern Penitentiary from this county under a life sentence, for the murder of a man

named Lucas, died on Thursday night last of inflammation of the bowels. A short time before he died he confessed that he was guilty of the crime. Thus has a deep mystery been cleared away. Risley was convicted on purely circumstantial evidence, and in the minds of many of our people there was a very grave

doubt of his guilt. He has since his incarceration and up to the time of this confession stoutly proclaimed his innocence.

It will be rembered that Risley bought a farm from Lucas, and late one evening

both started from the village of Centerville in the southeast corner of the couty, to come to this city to have the deed recorded, and draw the money from bank. Mr. Lucas was never seen after crossing Honey Creek. It was reported he was seen in this city the next morning and that he was seen going east on the National road. He lived unhappily with his wife and many supposed he had received his money from Risley and left for other parts. Some weeks after, when the excitement in the neighborhood had been allayed, and the affair almost forgotten, at a lone and unfrequented part of Honey Creek, just below where the Lockport road crosses it, Risley was seen standing on the bank looking into the water. The fact becoming noised about, the search was renewed, and the body found, at the very place where Risley was seen looking into the water. It had been sunk by attaching a bag of rocks to his neck. An examination of the body revealed a bullet hole through the head and the front of the skull was broken and sunk in, as if from the effect of a heavy blow.

Risley, Moses Holmes and two others were arrested on suspicion. Risley and Holmes were tried, on a change of venue, in Putnam county. The first named was sent to the penitentiary for life. Holmes was acquitted, and is now residing we believe in Louisville, Kentucky.

On the trial of the latter, Risley was brought up from the penitentiary, and testified that he was acquainted with Lucas, knew him about four years and knew his wife before h was married; lived about three miles from where they lived and about three miles from Centreville. Started from there with Lucas on the 13th. We had traded, I was to give him $1,500. for the land. He gave the number of acres of the land and the terms of the trade—said he refused to take the deed when Lucas returned with it from Terre Haute and had it altered.

Went Thursday evening after the deed was acknowledged; was not satisfied with it; was afraid it was not right and conclued I would go to town and have it examined before I paid the money. We made arrangements to go, and we started about dark, and staid [sic] there until about midnight when we started to Terre Haute. It was about 8 o'clock when we left Centreville, went by Esq. Pearson's, some distance out of the road, and then went to Thomas Taylor's; stopped there a short time and then went on to my house; we drove slow. My family were in bed; put the horse in the stable. My wife got up and opened the door and went back to bed. I went in the kitchen and sent something to eat, when we ate and talked for some time. I asked Lucas for the deed; he gave it to me and I looked over it two or three times.

My wife and I talked about it and she said it was unnecessary to go to Terre Haute. I then said that we would go to Taylor Pearson's in the morning and if he said it was all right I would pay him the money. Lucas then said he wanted to go to town; that his wife said he should put the money in bank, and we started on to town about 12 or 1 o'clock that night. We went from my house to the

Bono road; we drove slow and got to strawberry hill about five o'clock in the morning; crossed under on the bridge by D. Donham's. Near .the Female Col-

ege, on Sixth street we parted there; I

_k.-

UKMIUA* !M Iaib'J

went to my brother-in-law's, Charley Moore, and he (Lucas) said that he would go to his brother's; don't know where he went.

We met again near the Post Office. I told Charley Moore that I had the deed to the land and told him that Lucas and I had traded. I was pretty well satisfied with the deed but wanted to show it to a lawyer. Showed it to a school teacher, a lame man, who said it was a good deed. Lucas and me went to the Union House and there I paid him the money, between the door and the screen. I took the deed to have it transferred: saw Judge Claypool there: showed it to him. This was after I had paid the money. The last time I saw Lucas was at the Union House. He said he had more business to attend to. I started home about three o'clock in the

afternoon got home about sundown; went to Holmes about 9 o'clock on the same morning to borrow some money; found him at a grocery store on the national road, near Teeny's; don't know who kept it. Holmes asked me if Lucas and I had traded. Was told that Lucas had passed there: while we were talking about it Mr. Reeves came by; said Holms [sic] told him that Lucas was running away, and that he was going to Centerville to tell it. My wife had the money I paid Lucas sewed up in a pocket in her skirt. She had fifteen hundred dollars and gave me all but ten. I had paid him ten dollars the day we made the trade; he wanted it to pay a man he owed and I had that much and gave it to him.

We went from Centreville in a light express wagon. Mrs. Baker talked of going with us to Terre Haute with two of her children, but finally declined to do so, she said that one of her children was sick. I was willing for her to go with us.— Risley tried to explain why he was on the creek near where the body of Lucas lay in the creek, but a short time before it was found, and also why he was measuring the depth of the creek before Lucas was killed. He was thoroughly cross-ex-amined, but nothing in addition to the main facts above detailed, could be drawn from him. —————
