Eclipse Excursion.—Speiking
THE IDEA that the interception of the

Here the obscuration will cover about twenty-three out eot ,twe&ty-four paru of
that tbe interception,of the
Sun's rays when eclipsed produces any considerable chillness is quite imaginary. Of course there is a perceptible effect, as the interception occurs outside of the Earth's atmosphere, but it can by no means be so marked as some suppose. As the Moon passes over the Sun's disc, the released light of the latter reaches the Earth—from a distance of 240,000 miles—in the incredible brief space of only about 1 1/2 seconds or at the rate of 12,000,000 of miles per minute. So we need not look for any opportunity for replenishing our ice houses from the congelation that will follow or expect that
vegetation will be nipped with frost during the obscuration of next Saturday evening.
AN AWFUL TRAGEDY! —————
SUDDEN DEATH AND SUICIDE! —————
A Young Man Fatally Shoots Himself Beside the Corpse of his Brother!! —————
Two brothers, natives of Ireland, plasterers by trade though occasionally working at other occupations—and named respectively John S. and Michael Smith, the former thirty, and the latter twenty-six years of age, took board at the Early House, on Main street, about ten days ago. They were quiet, gentlemanly men, of good habits, and made themselves agreeable to all with whom they came in contact. The elder brother, John F., had been in this country for eight or nine years, and had paid a visit to his old home a few months ago, bringing Michael with him on his return to America. They had passed some considerable time together at work on the Union Pacific Railroad, and came here, not long since, to get work at their trade, in which effort, however, they did not succeed.
On Monday evening, John F. complained of a pain in his head, and later— after he had retired to bed—the pain increased so that a physician Doctor Young—was called, who found him suffering from congestion of the brain of so severe a type that, though every effort was made to arrest the disease, he died at five o'clock yesterday morning.
Michael appeared greatly affected by the sudden, unexpected death of bis brother, and declared, in great mental agony, that he could not live now that "Jack" was dead. The landlady, and others, talked with him freely, and did all in their power to induce him to take a more rational view of the sad but inevitable event. But, the unfortunate man refused consolation and gave his mind up to despair. He went out and walked up and down the street, going to the river once or twice, but was carefully observed by those who, knowing his state of mind, feared he might attempt selfdestruction by drowning. Soon after eight o'clock he returned to the house and passed up to the room—No. 4, at the right of the front stairs—where the corpse of his brother was lying. The people in the house hoped that he had become calmer and would soon become reconciled to his bereavement, but this hope was speedily dispelled. The report of a pistol rang through the building. Members of the landlord's family rushed to room No. 4 and there beheld Michael Smith lying, in awful agony, beside the dead body of his brother. He had discharged a Derringer pistol into his own person, intending that the ball should pass through his heart—as he afterwards said—and produce instantaneous death. But his aim had been imperfect, the heart was missed, the ball entering just below the front side of the left breast and passing backwards with a slight downward inclination. Medical aid was immediately called and all that kindness, skill and science could do were done to alleviate his sufferings. At the present writing, ten o'clock P.M., the unfortunate

man is still living, but entirely unconscious and sinking fast. There is no probability that he will live until morning.
He expressed deep regret that his life had not ended with the report of the pistol, and showed no desire to live. His brother and best friend, he said, was gone and he must go, too. On a piece of a blank leaf torn from a note book, upon his person, were found these words, very legibly written in his own handwriting:
What pen eould add to the pathos of such a story as this? The body of John F. was taken to the cemetery and deposited temporarily in the dead house.
There is still another brother, Thomas, who is at work on one of the railroads centering here. If he should see this notice be requested to call on M. W. O'Connell. —————
WE LEARN that Centenary Sabbath School has chartered a train of cars on the St. Louis and Alton Railroad for a picnic excursion next Tuesday, August 10th, to the beautiful grove at Paris, Illinois. This is a new route, and for comfort and pleasure is certainly an excellent choice. ————

CORONER'S INQUEST.—Coroner Christy held an inquest yesterday on the body of John Francis Smith, whose death is noticed elsewhere. The jury found that deceased came to his death from congestion of the brain and lungs. The Corner requests us to publish the following description:
John F. Smith, 5 feet and 9 inches high weight about 160 pounds, light complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, profession a plasterer, Irishman; born in Neelee, county, Ireland; parents in London.
