The occasion for this action was a personal difference between him and some of the Brazilian Cabinet, which finally developed itself into an open rupture during the consideration of claims presented by him against the ship Oanada. He denounces the Brazilians as secret enemies of this Government, and asserts that he can prove them to be responsible for the dilemma in which Minister

EASTERN PAPKHS mention in a commendatory manner a movement that has been inaugurated in Boston to increase the salaries of the female teachers. One peculiarity oi the measure is, that the asked or reform emanates from the public— from those who will have to pay additional taxes in tho event of their petition meeting with success. We wish the taxpayers of Indiaoa could be imbued with alike sentiment of liberality, or failing in that, we would be glad to have them do only simple justice to the iemale teachers in the public schools of this State. Tbat justice Is not done them is patent from the fact that they are at present paid much smaller salaries than tho male tfachers. IJpon what grounds tbis distinction is made we are unable to discover. If a woman does her work as well as a man does his, we know of no good reason why she should not receive the same amount of salary, and if she cannot perform ber duties as well, as the other, she has no right to her position at all. But it is a notorious fact tbat for teaching the very young of either sex, and for teaching girls of any age, the woman is altogether the best and most desirable instructor. The fact is recognized only so far as employing the woman goe?, but when the question of payment ie considered, it is altogether ignored.— Why? The cost of living is aa great to one as to tbe other, the hours of labor exacted are as many, the strain upon body and mind is identical, the same amount of intelligence and culture is demanded, Then, why should one he paid lees than the other? either male nor female teachers are sufficiently remunerated when we consider the high character they have given to our public schools. No class labtrs more efficiently than they, nor does any deserve more of the com. munity. In Boston the teachers will get the advance of pay demanded for them, and tbe reasons that are good there should be considered equally gwd^ else-
