WOOLEN MANUFACTORIES.—There are

two very large Woolen Mills in this city, both of them running on full time and up to their full capacity. These mills give employment to a large number of men, women, boys and girls, and are among the best establishments of the kind in the State. Trial jjf Hennessy and Land!

yititk HfOTB. UTVO0. irtSh*

S W^nseday afternoon the trial of Ed ward Henneuy and George Landif for the murder of Alvin R. Hay ford was comImenoed in the Criminal Court, Judge I Grain presiding. The ceurt room wag filled with interested spectators and friends of the young men. 'Messrs McLean and AHen were appointed by the Court to assist Prosecutor Hannain the prosecution. The defense will be conducted by .Messrs Baird Cru^ MaCk.Toortiees A Key.

The defense asked a separate trial Cor the-defeadant* and the prosecution placed Hennossy first on trial.

The entire afternoon was consumed in empannelling a jury. A special venire of forty men had been summoned from tiie country, frbm which to make np the same. From those retured on this venire the following persons were challenged for cause, having formed or expressed an opinion, viz: Messrs. William Gray, J. Williams, H. S. Pennington,' John A James, William Watkins, J. J. Riley J[phu McFarland and J. Lockade.

The prosecution peremptorially chal leDged five.persons, viz: Messrs. Robert McElroy, James Price, Patrick Curly, Samuel ^Barker and George Carico.

The defendant peremptorially challenged six person?, viz: Messrs. J. Copeland, S. Lockade, Nathan Balding, Jos. James, Ralph'Wilson and'Cornelius C. Smock.

The following "jury was then selected and cmpalled, to wit: Messrs. N. A. Cox, Hffif. Caldwell, Zaohariah Alvis, Peter Hughes, Thomas Dermoddy, Baker Spence, Henry Pennington, Eben C. "taunds, George Vermillion, Wm. Mc Pheters, Henry C. Robinson and Peter

Tne history of this affair is fresh in the .ipinds.of most of our readers. It occurred on the 20th of November last, and originated in a game of cards, in which the deceased all leged that Hennessey and others had wott, or cheated him out of some twenty-ifive dollars. Meeting Hen,nessy Friday evening on Ohio street, near tho County Scales, Hayford caught hold of him with both handsiand demanded that.Hdnneasy giye him back part of his money-.* Hennessy endeavored to get away from him, saying

When the gentleman returned Hayford still had fcotd of Hennessy's arm, and. he started arouild to the Postoffice in search of the officer. Before he returned George Landis handed Hennessy ,a club—a heavy J^nchMejg—.with which Hennessy struck ^Hayford three blows on the head the lattettbe ran across the street. Hennessy f61l6wed, struck a,t him again In the middle of the street and both ran into the alley back of the JSuntin House, where he again struck him three blows, when Hay» .ford fell after which Hennessy again dealt one or two blows on the head, and

Physicians were bailed, but the taian sank rapidly and died at four o'clock the next morning.. Hayford was a young man about "twenty-four years of age^ a strangerin the city, having come from Chicago a cbuple of weeks previous, in company with bis wife, on a visit to tome friends in this county^Dlrectly after the affray Hennessy was atfe9fed and taken before the Mayor, Where a complaint for "assault- and battery'' was filed. The injured man not being able to attend the trial, on accoant, as was supposed and understood at tba time, of being intoxicated, it was continued until next morning, Hennessy giving bail in the sum of fifty dollars for bis appearance. Sometime during the night, when it was ascertained that Hayford could not live, Hennessy and Landis left the city. They stopped at Marshall

The Terre Haute Chief of Police knows his biz. He Is no ncrnit, If all we hoar about him Ia correct He knows tha value of his services, and has a keen appreciation of "rewards," as well as punishments. Some time since a fellow named SikM "did" Mr. James Sulgrove and others out of nuns of money aggregating to the amount of $200, by representing that he had *48,006 In New York bankv but was short joist at that time. The T*w Haute police were warned to look out for the swindler. On M*nday our Chief of Police received the following dispatch from the Terre Haute Chief: "Is there any reward fof James Sikes I can get him. Answer Immediately.

Since the above was in type we have met Mr. Crowe, wh» informs us that he arrested Sikes without authority, kept him without authority nineteen hours, and receiving no reply to his dispatch let the mas go.

MANUFACTURERS.—G. W. Haberly,

W. Haberly,

President of the Terre Haute Iron and Nail Works, returned to the city yesterday from a tour in the interest of the Company. He finds a growing demand for the nails prodoced at these works. In many localities they have superseded these of all other manufactories. The Company now has thirty machines constantly running and will, in a day or two, put them on "double time," employing two sets of operatives. Other machines will, ere long, be added, and the day is not far distant when still more extensive additfons will be made to the productive capacity of this enterprising and prosperous corporation. At present. they are turning out two thousand kegs of nails per week, making every size, from a two penny nail to an eight-inch spike. Real estate, in the vicinity of the works, has risen more than four hundred per cent, since the Company commenced operations: This last item is a hint that should not be lost by property holders.

If our city is ever to attain metropolitan proportions, it must depend for its growth, to a great extent, upon the development of its great natural and acquired advantages as a manufacturing town. Trade will do much, but manufactures may and ought to do much more. When our men of eapital will take hold in earnest to build up industrial enterprises the city, new prosperous and increasing rapidly in wealth and population, will start orward [sic] at an accelerated pace in the sure road to substaatial [sic] greatness. =====

The public shall at all events, realize that we, who stand for Protection, habitually read and try to comprehend our adversa« ries, while they ignore our writings and grossly caricature our arguments.

These essays will ultimately be printed together but, in view of the desperate efforts of the Free Traders to forestall opinion and try to wrest a verdict from a public which has not beard tke case ar. gued, we ask the friends of Protection to aid us in giving these essays, as they originally fall from the press, a general diffusion.

The Free Trade League, organized in this city, by and in the interest of foreign manufacturers, is laboring assiduously through newspapers which it controls, and by the distribution of tracts and pamphlets, to destroy the Tariff and surrender our markets to the importers of foreign manufactured goods. Their efforts can best be counteracted by the dissemination of journals intelligently und continuously devoted to the protection of American labor and the fostering of American interests. :.e9*s®
