An enlightened Presbyterian divine is reported to have said in General Assembly, "The cry of orthodoxy is an $mpty sound, meaning nothing." He was not disputed.
The Library of Congress has, within the last sixty days, received an increase of 2,000 volumes, most of them elegant foreign standards, relating to American affairs, and formerly owned by Maximiift. IAN,
PaoMiNitHT memberB of the Kova Scot tiun Assembly are not disposed to allow tho question of falling in with the Canadian Confederacy to go by default. ,To keep the subject alive, and, if possible, secure better terms of federation, a resolution has been introduced, in the shape of a prayer or petition, to England to grant the privilege of forming Nova Scotia into an independent Stato. This i» certainly modest, and a country so lavish of charters as England has been ought not withhold the necessary document in this case.
In the resolutions relating to the transfer of the Hudson Bay Company's lands of the Dominion of Canada, as well as Prince Rupert Land, due regard is had for the Indian: "That upon the transference of the territories in question to the Canadian government, it will be the duty of the government to make adequate provision for the protection of the Indian tribes whose interests and well-being are involved in the transfer." Thus reads the clause whose spirit has been uniformly dealt out, as is proved by the fact that Indian frontier wars and depredations are unknown north of the lakes.
A woman addresses a communication to the Revolution in favor of employing women as lawyers and jurymen. She says, by way of argument, that "the presence of women as jurors and advocates could not but purify the court room.— The unnecessary and indecent cross-ques-tioning, now so common would not be tglerated.'' Tho'N. Y. Sun doubts whether, with women for jurors and counsel, and with women also for judges, much would be spared in the way of talk. At least, such a result would not be in accordance with the popular estimate of tho fluency of the powers of speech. Nor do we think it desirable that cross-oxamina-tions should bo stopped. They make^often all the fun of a trial."' 1
Thk1'editor of the Western Christian Advocate finds a recognition of Christianity in the Constitution of the United States. He says: "While in the body of the instrument there is no evidence that tbis la a Christian country, at its close we read that it was 'done in Convention by the unanimous consent of the States pres. ent, in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty-seven.' He argues that if the framers of our Constitution had been Mahommedans they would have dated the dooument from the Hegira, or had they been Romans it would havo been marked A. U. C, or had they been Hebrews it would have beon dated for the year of the Mosaic creation, Anno Mundl, or had they been infidels the dating would have been after the fashion of the French "Voltaireans, from the year I but tho framers.pt" the Constitution being Christian men, dated it "from the year of our Lord." He thinks that it would have been better to hav,e had a recognition of God and Christ in the body of the instrument itself, -but notwithstanding the omission he fails to soe the expediency of urging the assembling of a National Convention to change the phraseology. We might fail to be a Christian people with the words inserted, and .we may bccome Christian in heart and life with the words unineerted. It is not diflicult to decido which would be tbe more desirable..
Those who have read our telegraphic reports from the Presbytorian Assemblies nre already awarothat after a separate existence of ovor thirty yoars, the Old and New School branches of that Church have decided, through their representatives convenod in New York City to reunite and form hereafter a single Church. The report was unanimously reported in the New School it was unanimously adopted, and in the Old School there were but eight dissenting voice?. Although the plan is to bo siibmittod to the various presbyteries for approval, it may bo considered that tbo question of reunion is virtually sottled. It will be seen that in tho plan adopted by the Assemblies the questions on which the separation in 1838 took place are ontirely ignored. The second clause of the plan embraces the only questions of doctrino and polity touched upon at all. It reads as follows:
Tho reunion shall be effectod on tho doctrinal and occlesiastical basis of our common standards the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments shall bo acknowledged to be tho inspired word of God, and the only infallible rule of faith and practice the Confession of Faith shall continue to be sincerely received and adopted as containing the system of doctrino taught in the Holy Scriptures jmd the Government and Discipline of the Presbyterian Church in the United Stales shall be approved as containing the principles and Tules of our polity."

The "cat" is still administered at the State Prison North. Don't let us throw many rocks at Delaware on account of tbe whipping post until we can dispense with tbe most brutal instrument of torture ever invented. So few of the actual criminals are convicted in this State, tha^ the authorities seem to feel that they are required to torture tbo email number in their hands with unmerciful brutality, to make them suffer vicariously for tbe crimes of the groat mass of criminals who slip through our courts and come out white washed. On this principle, it would be well to burn a dozen or two at the stake, and let the rest go free.
It is a radical defect in the lawaof this State which makes it even possible for a Sheriff to select or "pack" a jury. Whatever number of men may be required from which to empannel a jury, they should be drawn by lot. Any other course is open to the gravest objections, and is extremely liable to turn a jury trial into the merest farce. It would be much cheaper and about as sensible to put tho Sheriff iDto the jury box and lot him decide a case, as to permit him to select twelve men from the whole county for that purpose. Many of the shameful verdicts, in different parts of the State, which have brought jury trials into contempt, and finally evoked the mob spirit, may be clearly traced to the "packing" of juries by the influence of interested parties. It is useless to prosecute a case where the twelve men who are to decide it, are selected—by accurate foro knowl edge- for tbo sole purpose of acquittal.

The extensive flouring mills of Hall & Arlison, of this city, were burned down this morning about two o'clock. They have not been in operation for about three months and it is thought the fire was the work of an incendiary. The loss will reach about $30,000, with about $15,000 insurance, divided as follows AEtna, Hartford, $3,500; Home, of New York, $3,500; Liverpool, of London, $3,000, and Home, of New Haven, $2,500. This is the moat destructive fire we have had for years.
At Warsaw, Indiana yesterdy, another poisoning case was concluded. Over one year ago Dr. Shaffer and his wife were arrested on the charge of poisoning Isaac Jackson, by giving him to eat a piece of pie with strychnine in it. He was taken violently ill after eating the pie, and died in a few minutes. The accused were admitted in three thousand dollars bail for their appearance at Court. In the meantime the Doctor died, and his wife's trial came up at the May term of the Court yesterday. She was found guilty, and sentenced to the State Prison for life. The Doctor, on his death-bed strongly asserted the innocence of his wife, as also does Mrs. Shaffer. She is about thirty-five years old, and takes her sentence with great feeling. =====
Female Warriors.
It is not a very uncommon thing for women to serve in the disguise of soldiers, and our late war presents several exam^ pies. The services, however, appear to have been inconsiderable and the dis guises imperfect, for "discharged*' is the brief record of nearly all- In tbe war of the American Revolution two or-three instances of heroic action on the part of women were gratefully acknowledged by the public authorities. Swapping a Wife for a Horse An exchange tells of an -amusing ,case which came before a lawyer of Pontiac Mich., a short time since. The story goes that a man residing in Oakland county (whose name is not mentioned) became enamored of another mans wife, and supposing that If be could gain her hasbabd's consent, for a valuable conirideration, he could take her to himself without- viola ting tbe law (she being willing),produced a forged letter from the woman's father to the effect that he bad heard serious charges against his son-in-law and was coming to take his daughter away. The husband, supposing that he must lose bis wife, was induced to accept a horse in ex change for her, supposing that he would thus be released from the bonds of matrimony without the trouble and expense of applying to the courts. A few days since tbe husband hearing that his wife intend ed to return to her first love, and not feel ing disposed to receive her, consulted lawyer as to whether she could return and oblige him to live with her, and was much surprised to learn that 'tbe bargain and sale he had made were void. He now wishes to obtain, a divorce, and. congratulates himself on having the best pf the bargain, for he says he has a horse that worth more than the woman ever vras.

BCBiSeK'S TuEHosl^ siaB^r ...... --i Seaweed Tonic aud Mandrake fills will sore Consumption, Liver Completnt and Kfepeyeie, if taken accordivg to ibe directions. They are -all throe to be taken at the lame time. They cleenie the stomach, relax the Jlvei:. andjiut It to work thon the appetite becomes good '|Uia food digeite and makes good blood tho patient^aglna to grow in floeh i- tho diseased matter ripens In. the lungs, and the patient outgrows tbe'jUaeaen and geti well. Thli is the only way to core Oou-J sumption.
To these three medicines Br. i.JL Schaaofc, Philadelphia, owes his unrivalled suoceea ln the treatment of Pulmonary Oousuinption. 'The frulmonlo Syrup ripens the morbid matfeE-da'the Innga, nature throwa It off by an easy toatlvn, for when (he phlegm or matter is ripo a dight congb.will throw it«f, and ths pptipnt has -est, and the lungs begin toJieal.
To do this, the Seaweed Tonio and Mandrako Pills mnat be freely uaed to oieaaae tbe dtomach and liver, ao that the Pulmonic Dyrup and the (bod will make good blood.
Sohenck Mankrake tills act upon the liver, removing all obatruotions, relax the duets of the gall bladder, the bile starts tiealy and ths .liver is aoon relieved the stools wlllab»w,|riw4. tho Pills can do nothing has ever beon invests! except calomel (a Jeadly poiion which it very dangerous to use unless with great care), ttiVf will unlock the gall bladder and start the secretions of ths liver like Uchenck's Mandrako fills.
Liver Complaint is one of the most, (eminent causes of Consumption.Sobenck's SeaweSd Tonio ia a gentle' etimalant aad alterative, and the alkali iu the Seaweed, which ttie prifaration is made of :aaeieur the nomach to throw out the gastric juice to ilisselvo tbe food with the Pulmonic 6y rup, and It li mado into good blood without f»riaepi*iiua«r touring in the stomach.
The great rcasou why physicians do not cure Oonsunipilon is, they try to oo too mncb th give medicine to atop the ooagUs. i»fM the chills,to stop night swesla, hefino fiVirJ anoHiy so doing they derange the wnole digeetive powers, locking np the secretions, aud eventually the partisan sinks and dies. lr. echsnck, in his treatment, docs not try to atop a caugh, night aweau, chiila or fever, liemove the canae, and they will all atop of their own accord. Ho one can be cured of Oonicmption, Liver Complaint, Dyspepsia, Catarrh, Oa tikes, Ulcerated Xnroat, unities the livoi- uid etomach are make health).
If a pertou has Consumption, of course Ibe lungs in some way,',are diseased, either tnbeiclos, abscesses, bronchial irritation, pleura adheelon, ar the inngs area mass or inflammation and fast deoaying. In euch cases, what must bo dune?— it is not only the lungs that are wasting, bnt It is ths whole body. 'lht stomach aud liver have lost their power to make blood outof food. Mow, the only ehance is 10 take l)r. Schsnok's three medicines, whir1* w.U bring up a ton* to the stomach, the patient will bogin to want., food, it will digest easily and makegood blood then 1 lie patient begins to gain in flesh, and asaoon as the body begins to grow, the lunge ooiaiasacc to heal up, and the patient gets tteeky and wcii. This iu the only way I cure Consumption.
When theie Is no lung, disease, anl' unly !iver Complaint and Dyspeps'ia, Schenek's Ssaweed Tonic and Slandrake fills are sufficient, without the Pulmonic Syrup. Take the' Handralke fills freely in all bllloua complaints, a# OeflsMtfgrfectly harmless.
