Broad Ripple is the boasted fishing ground of Indianapolis. How insignificant the above when we state that a few jaji since too disciples of good old Isaac Walton, caught with hook and line twenty-seven bass, in the Wabash just above the railroad bridge.

HON. HENRY D., WASHBURN passed

through the city yesterday on the way to Helena, Montana, to take charge of his position as Surveyor General of that Territory. He takes his family with him, going to St. Louis, where passage will be taken on one of the mountain boats. We wish him success and prosperity in this new country, and predict that not many years will elapse before we shall record his name as a Senator elect of the new State of Montana. —————

1 tHE special session of the Legislature having closed yesterday, Messrs. Scott, Pierce and Hamilton have returned to their homes, happy to be released from tbtf caret and perplexities of. legislative duties.. We believe they have honestly ani faithfully endeavored in all things te forward the best interests of their constituents and promote the prosperity and bonor of the State. There has been little pleasure and less profit in their service, .and we congratulate them on their release from duties that involve »o much of personal sacrifice.

Already at the gymnasium and skating rink, girls have donned a dross that leaves their legs and lungs freo. The ideatbat a woman is made like a churn on castors is fast passing away, and it will not be long ere she, too, will honor the bifurcated garments and find new health and vigor in deep breathing and freedom of locomotion. BunoLARY.—The residence of Mr. H. H. Teel, north Fifth street, was entered by.burglarsyesterday morning about threb o'clock, and some two hundred dollars wdrth of silver ware taken. Mrs. Teel was awakened by a pair of tongs being thrown iown, but supposing it to be accidental, the fact of the noiso being caused by the burglars was not discovered until too late to give an alarm.

Since the above was in type we loara thtmidtiicsi of Mr. J. R. Tillotson, on Fifth street, and Mr. S. K. Allen on Fourth street were entered the same night. At Mr. Tillotson's the burglars got about $60 worth of silverware. Mr. Allen lost only his pants. The burglars were evidently good judges of ware, as at Mr. Til lotscn's they took only the solid silver ware, leaving the plated undisturbed.

There can be no mistake that there is a gang of burglars and thieves iojthis city, ao4 out people cannot be too careiul guarding their households at night.

was made before the Mayor on Saturday afternoon, and such testimony, although entirely circumstantial, was presented as a? to warrant his Honor to commit the. to jail, to await the

ttionprisoner

of the grand jury. The whereouts of Curran the night of the murder can be traced during the entire night except a short period about the time Jackson received his injuries. There is one witness who cannot be found, by whom this link in the chain of evidence san be supplied. This witness, a fellow laborer, named Golden,haB suddenly disappeared It will be remembered that Flinn and Swift were first arrested, but Curran al though accustomed to be daily at work on the building in the rear of the new Court /House, could not be found. Soon after the arrest of Flinn and Swift, this man Golden went to his employer, Mr. Wood, and asked for his pay, stating that he wanted to leave town, as he did not wiBh to ap-

pear he himself up. Previous to Curran and Golden quitting work on that Monday morning they were seen in earnest convention. The examination before the Mayor^, most strenuous efforts wi bring forward tbi3 man Golden, and it is expected that by the meeting of the Gr^nd Jury, in June, much additional tesiirnony will be obtained.

This explains where a little shm of the money paid into the Treasury goes to, and why the Treasurer could not redeem County orders with it. We are informed thlat he has already received orders in payment of taxes to the extent of several thousand dollars more than what the county's portion of the taxes collected amounts to, which is $40,499 77.

SILVER MINES IN VERMILLION

gives the following account of silver mining operations in that county: We understand that the miners are now operating on the silver mines situated five miles west of this place, on the Little Vermillion. We are informed that the company are greialy encouraged.— They are now burning a coal pit, and building a stone furnace for smeltirig purposes. The company have lately had an old miner to come and prospect for them, and see whether there was enough of the glittering material in the ore to justify them in going ahead and working the mines this summer. The old miner reports favorably and tells them to go ahead by all means that the ore is very rich, and that there is a thousand hidden fortunes waiting for the shovel and pick to expose them to the outside world. The company are going to commence working three hands in the mines just as soon as they can get ready for operations. They appear to be wild with excitement, and think the future before them is a bright one. We hope it may prove so, and that they may unearth milions of the glittering silver, is our prayer. —————

ThsAMidmeat ud the Democracy

The House of Representatives ratified the 15th amendment to the .Constitution of the United States on Friday afternoon last. On that same evening, Rev. JL P. Hansznond preached to the colored" citi zens of this city, »t Misonic ^all, andll is a notable fact that several:of the most active and uncompromising Datnocrats of theStateveiein atteodancej uidi led most freely with our colored friends Ode old. politican, who has Jiarangued "o!d liners" from almost every stump in the State warning them against the evils and shame of negro equality was loud in their midst, and warmly cad affectionately shook each colored man by the band that came within his reach, and seemed to rejoice that the day to him of perfect equality had come. -The black skin of the negro in the past has been a God-send to the Democratic party, By virtue of him and bis color, that 'party held almost unlimited power in the Government for Almost half a century, and for him, and his degradation and continued enslavement, perilled their all in braving the storms ot- treason and-re-bellion. But with all their efforts to enslave and brutalize the negro, he is not only free to-day, but will soon exercise every right and privilege of a free man in the Republic. It is necessary, therefore, for the Democratic party to change front and devise new tactics for -the future. "White husbands or none," was a most admirable motto in the past, but when the negro has a ballot in his hand that may wipe- out the aspiring fate of Democratic leaders and politicians, it is high time to paint new banners and revise old speeches. Our Democratic friends are disposed to take time by the forelock, and the commissioned missionaries who attended the Mascnic Halt meeting are but pickets thrown out from the main arpiy near by, which is ready to surround, capture and absorb every colored man in the State.—Ind.
