IIJVEBDI!
From the Indianapolis Journal, 20th. At about 9 o'clock last night, a heavy
storm of rain and hail, accompanied by wind and lightning, came up and passed over the city. In the midst of it, a heavy shock was felt, shaking the ground and plainly perceptible above the fury of the tempest. Soon after, the fire alarm was sounded, striking the number 1-3, for Massachusetts avenue and Noble street. This gave color to a report which was started by some person, in the Council Chamber that the Bellefontaine car shops had fallen in, and ten or twelve men were buried in the ruins. The Council was immediately adjourned, and several persons started at once for the supposed scene of the disaster. The statement was found to be a false one, when it was reported that it was the Central Railroad Freight Depot, instead of the car-shops, which was blown down. This report was found to be correct, and upon our arrival there we found a crowd collected, while the building, was almost a total ruin. At the time the accident occurred several persons were in the depot, the engineer of the pony engine "Alert," Allen McCutchan, the night watchman, Samuel Bell, a night switchman, a German car inspector, J. B McNeeley, clerk, all in the second story. Rev. Daniel Ballou, a Universalist minister, from Utica, New York, who preached at Masonic Hall on Sunday night last, was passing by the building when the storm came up, and took shelter in it.
Mr. Ballou and Mr. McCutchan, who were both seriously and doubtless, fatally injurred [sic]. McCutchan was terribly bruised, both internally and exteranlly, and with but little hops of his recovery, was taken to his residence, on Liberty street, between Meek and Georgia.
Mr. Ballou was injured about the head, and his hand was badly hurt, but the
ware street, and when we saw him, between ten and eleven o'clock, he was suf-

In addition to the disaster to the Central Freight Depot, several other buildings were more or less injured. The south end of the brick building occupied
