Fatal Shots. From the Helena (Montana) HeraldThose who are under the impression lhat Indiana possess no personal bravery, and that their only prowesa with deadly weapons is when they hold the vantage ground, either among bemselves or in warfare against the* whites,' would have been disabused of this impression Could they have witnessed ono of the bravest and most thrilling enactments of a tragedy, tho equal of which, perhajiij has ne*er takon place within the bounds of Montana. An Indian duel took place, near Mr. Helters' saw-mill, situated on Ten Mile creek, and about six miles from town, yesterday afternoon,an account of whicb, as we were then informed was published in last evening's Herald.
From an eye-witnesa of tha bloody affair we are in possession of -further particulars, which were related to us sis follows:
A few Indians were in a oabin occupied by some of the employes of the mail, when one of them displayed his revolver, at the same time expatiating on its merits and bis own extraordinary skill in its use. This'he carried to such an extent that another brave of the party exclaimed in his native tongue,"Ugh, you can't shootl" and denounced bim as a braggart, at the same time saying that be could put bim to shame at bis own game. Whereupon, native No. I proposed, a test of skill, giving his opponent the advantage of a rifle, his favorite weapon.—
This was at once acceded to, and Immediate preparations were made for a duel in their own peculiar style. By this ti.ma' about twenty warriors had collected, .and all repaired a short way from the cabin where they marked off about forty feet— tbe distance that was to separate the hostile savages. During these preparation^ the doomed warriors looked upon each' other with the most stoic indifference, and the crowd wailed for the denoument ,in silent wonder. When all was made ready, the opponents took their position for the last act standing with their heels on the mark—back to back—one with revolver and the other with bis rifle. One of the natives bad been selected'to act as second for both he took bis position a little aside from the line of fire waved a spaar, decorated with paint and feathers, two or three times above his bead, gave the terrible war-whoop, and, on the the instant, the duellists wheeled and fired. Both fell—one shot through the brain, the other pierced to the heart I—

All returned to Utica before daylight, and leaving the cara in the western part of the city, easily escaped detection. On some occasions the thieves have secreted large quantities of goods in the woods near Oneida. Ooo night they stole an immense quantity of valuable articles, and afterward found itneoassary to make several trips to Ooeida to bring them to this city.
Much valuable property has been destroyed. The acts of vandalism of which these youngsters have been guilty are almost innumerable. Ignorant of their value, the thieves have destroyed large quantities of crepe vails. Only a few nights since they dumped a package of silk worth $5,000 in a ditch by the side of the track. They knew nothing of the value of the bale, and preferred to carry off a quantity of common handkerchiefs. The goods have been sold for very small sums, and in many cases have been given away. At times the property would accumulates# rapidly that it has been found necessary to burn it to avoid detection. A couple of weeks since one cf the rascals, fearing discovery, burned a bag containing two bushels of ladies' gaiters. The last robbery to which tbe boys confess was committed on the 29th ef Matob.

Thus ended one of the most extraordinary and tragic encounters that has ever come within our province to record.

The President seems to have away of his own. He has not left Cincinnati (|nd Newport alone in their tribulationaupder. foreign Postmasters. Louisville can sym* patbize with us in this "onpleasantness." James Pi Luse, proprietor of tbe New Albany (Ind.) Commercial, haa been appointed Surveyor of Customs ,ifor Louisville! Mr. Lass is all right as a Republican, but it is hard for the Louisvillians to welcome a Hoosier to their most lucrative office. But, "Let us have peace!'' and in order to have it local pride must be mortified, and tbe people must break down the fences that have hitborto divided the great fleid of fraternity into ten-acre lots.
Even mountain ranges or great rivers must not continue to be sectional boundaries. "Lands intersected by a narrow frith" must no longer "abhor each other." "Mountains interposed" must no longer "make enemies of nations." Wonder if President Grant is not an admirer of Cowper? He could not find a more interesting "frith" to practice on than tho Ohio and he teems in a fair way to strike tbe old ditch out of the map as the dividing waters between people that should "minel into one." "Let us have peace."—Cin. **v limes.
