pany of Indianapolis have fifty-seven men, exclusively of the official depart ment, and one hundred and sixty head of horses and mules, in their employment. In addition to the Crown Hill Cemetery line, they have laid down eleven and half miles of single track within the city limits, which is stocked with forty-six cars and one snow-plow. Their buildings, which are brick, have a frontage of 198 feet on Louisiana street and 120 feet on Tennessee street, and comprise car houses, stables, repair and smith shops, and offices. Their monthly expenditures average a little over $5,000 a month.— Five hundred is the average number of trips made daily, including all the routes. -----

with deep regret, of the accidental shooting of our old friend J. H. Beadle, editor of the Salt Lake Daily <Reporter>, formerly

a citizen of Rockville, and more recently of Evansville. Tbe accident occurred near his office, in Salt Lake City, Utah Territory, a few days since. It seems that Mr. Beadle was in the habit of practicing with a revolver each day, and had gone out on the morning the accident occurred, to enjoy a few moments of his favorite sport, when, through some means, one of the loads was discharged, taking effect in his knee, inflicting a wound which it is thought will lame him for life. The unfortunate circumstance will prevent his contemplated visit to the States during the present month. -----

•{There are now, In running order, within the borders of tbia State, two thousand Ave hundred and sixty-six miles of first class railroad. The traoks, engines, shops and all their property oomplete was val qed one year ago at ona hundred and sixty-four mtllions two hundred and twenty-four thousand dollars. The three roads that haVe: the greatest number of miles of track are the Ohio and Missis sippi, Louisville, New Albany and Chi c»go, and the Indianapolis, Cincinnati & LaFayette, accordlog to the old plats but sioce the consolidation of the Indiana Central, Union and Loganspo.it, and Chicago Air Line into the Columbus and Indiana railway, the latter takes the lead of all and in a few days the track to Vincennes will be added also."

regard to the condition of the child: The board with which he beat the child and which was produoed at the trial, is about two feet long, six inches wide, and half an inch thick. Upon examination it was found that the child's back was^beaten 10to a pulp, with strong indications of gangrene. His little hands were terribl bruised in bis efforts to ward off the blows being laid upon him hard and fast, by this lemon in human shape.

To add to the sufferings of the ohild his fingers had been frosan, and bursted with large sores in tbe palms ofthehando, which he says was tbe result of burns received by being kioked into the tire by the brute the child calls hisfather. To add to the uopardonable crime of tbis guilt} wretch, the child bears unmistakeable marks of having been starved, and not naif clad.

But what Is worse than ail, when tbe ifficers went out to arrest this devil in carnate, they found the child, which oould scarely stand alone, with his hande -o much swollen that he could scarcely move a finger, out in the cold, feeding nock!

The child was taken to the office of Dr. Crim, township physician, where he is receiving the necessary medical treatment, the township Trustee having furnished comfortable clothing. ,•

Mr. Schaeffer, with big large family, was on his way from Ohio, where be had sold his farm and effacts, to Iowa, where he intended to buy another farm and commence life anew in the West. Tbe devouring element destroyed everything except what be and his family wore when they were on shore.

These unhappy people were transferred to a boarding house"at the corner of Main and Green streets, from whence the man was removed to the Hospital yesterday afternoon. It is the intention of Mayor Thomas, we learn, to have these people removed to a place of more comfort, and procure, if possible, their transfer to their friends. "Their village was ordered to'.be burned," says General Jeff. C. Davis, in hisiepsrt of the late difficulties with the Alaska Indians and he further says, "that the tribe was niuch frightened at the summary manner they were dealt witb, and they have promised to surrender the murders, whom the Cammanding Gpneral is determined to

The

organ of the Democratic party of

Indiana, has been graciously pleased to intimate that the minority of the Legislature will magnanimoualy refrain from smashing a quorum, so long as they may be permitted to dictate the order of busiaese, and tire character of measures to be presented. This is a degree of magnanimity that approaches tbe sublime, and should excite the profound and lasting gratitude Of the majority!

It goes harder and harder every

day with these hyperborean victims of military civilization but we rather think that if such things go oo, we will have to adopt President Grant's suggestion, anfl withdraw the military from Alaska altogether—after which there will bo nc more fighting or killing than there was before tbey went there. All that v?e need to do in Alaska for the present is to keep up the show of authority, and this oouid be done well enough by stationing on the coast a private soldier, Who should wave the American flag defiantly at sunrise every morning.
