ASHLEY
activity of Secretary
BORIS,
The modesty and forbearance,of these men—who have been returned by rote about thirty per cent, less tbah that which they received last October, are altogether unprecedented, and infinitely, refrepbuigj According to Judge HANNA,' they, will demand, as "a condition precWiorit fo their coming forward to be( ^u^l.ifled tbat tbe Bepublicans shall give a solotno pledge that the question of the -adoption of tho proposed Amendment shall not be brought up in, any shape during, the session. la-jptiier words, they will not permit tbeorganreatlon of either House to be p'orfectedj uh leas the majority will agree, in adVat.ce, to submit to the dictation of a factious, revolutionary minority, not only as to the order of business, but as- to th#number and character of measures 1)8 ptesented.
Now we do not believe that the Fit^ teenth Amendment could be got through the Legislature, even If the revolutionists were to qualify and then keep their seats until the majority were ready to adjourn sine die. We know that th«re ,4s not a majority of Senators who will v,ota for it. But, admitting that the Republican* r«ally intended to pass it, the Democrats could defeat it at any time by the same otit rage which they perpetrated a few.jvpsks since.
Under those circumstances, and In order to aviid the great detriment to the interests of the State which must result from a failure to pass the appropriation bills, and sotfto others' of almost equal importance, we would be in favor of so far yielding to the necessities of tbe sit' uation as to permit a tacit understanding that tbo Amendment should not take precedence of tbe inditpcntable work of tha session. But when it is demanded by these hot-headed emissries of revolution that the majority shall go out to meet them with promises and vows, and shall entice them to qualify and take their seats by a total submtssion of the rights rhich justly pertain to thd dominant party, we have no hesitancy in saying tbat the demand is insulting beyond all precedent, and that compliance therewith is simply ... :i'. t* impossible. K,
AVe hnow th.«t a minority has rights, but among the rights we do not recog' nize that of openly and formally dictating what shall or shall not be done by the majurity. A majority may, in an emergency and for the salvation- of great public interests, voluntarily bind itself, but when It consents to pat a rope about its neck and put tbat rope in the hands of a minority, it is time forth craven neck thus bound and iieMy ta feel the elevating, pressure of the strangulating cord. We say then, to the Republicans in the-G^n-eral Assembly, meet the enemy with dignity, and give them no unnecessary pre-
vocation. Show a willingness to proceed at once with the moBt important no desire to hasten ihe consideration of the obnoxious question^ But be assured tbat aA"oaijl die people of Indiana, but tHepg true man Ip the whole country,

THREE skeletons were unearthed at
LaFayette the other day. It is supposed that they are the remains of parties murdered in a house of ill-fame some years ago. It is known that numbers of people mysteriously disappeared about that time, and the house was finally burned by a mob, of which no notice was ever taken by the authorities.—————
A DAY or two ago a workman, while excavating in a gravel-pit on the bank of the Wabash, near Vincennes, unearthed, a considerable quantity of silver plate, church ornaments, crucifixes, censers, silver-candlesticks, &c. These articles bore the appearance of having been buried half a century or more, and as the priests have given no explanation of the matter, it is involved in mystery. —————
A NUMBER of capitalists of Indianapolis are about to organize a company for the purpose of building a large hotel on the southeast corner of Illinois and Mar land streets, extending to, and including the Oriental House on Illinois street, with a front of two hundred feet on Maryland street. The Oriental House will bo re modeled and made to correspond with the main building.?.

Are-nomination of almost a complete set of city officials is very strong evidence not only of fitness in the nominees, but of fairness in the party. Men can not discharge the duties of such positions for two years without exposing their deficiencies, if they have any, aod the competition on Saturday was strong enough to have used e'very-proper advantage, if any could have been found. We may safely conclude, therefor^, that we have a tried and faith ful set oif officers, whom the primary election has made it our duty to ro-elect.

pondent of the Indianapolis Journal, Congressman Shanks, of this State, has introduced into tho House two or three propositions, which will be a great aid to Indiana soldiers, and they have been re ferred to his Committee on tho. Militia insuring them prompt and favorable consideration. One of these is to furnish artificial limbs to discharged soldiers and seamen wherever needed, making a very necessary and serviceable change in tha cumbrous and expensive plan which has been in operation since tbe close of the war. The other, and one which will be more directly valuable to Indiana, is an act to provide for tbo distribution of clothing to the inmates of all legally constituted. Soldiers' Homo in the several States. This places all such Homes as the one at Knightstown, on a par with those Homes established by the United States at Augutta, Dayton and Milwaukee, so far as tbe item of clothing is con cerned. How valuable this aid will be to our Knigbtstown Home, in relieving tbe State of the expense of clothing its Inmates, requires no words to determine. IfGeneral Shanks succeeds in getting tbo messurpj through Congress, he will receive tbe praise he deserves from tbe people of his own State.

About a week ago Greene made his appearanco in Norwich, and being recogniued by some of the police officers, was arrested. On hia examination it appeared that the woman whom he shot (Mrs,

A Character
Of no little celebrity among tho advo cates of universal equality here is Mra Dr, Mary Walker. She forms in her own person the advance picket of the "reform movement. ""She is.aslender, girlish, little body, with a tbin, pale face, in which one would hardly recognize her. The first time I saw her she was walking u^ Pennsylvania avenue in her usual habit, followed by the quick, inquisitive glances of a hundred pairs of eyes. From her costume, I supposed her to be a youth of the male gender, there being nothing in the heavy shag overcoat and square cut pants of doeskin or broadcloth to indicate her identity with the fair sex. A second re' vealed the two rolls of long brown hair hanging down to her shoulder blades, and suggested tbat here, sure enough, waa the fabled' What Is It?" Attired in this tjarb, she goes quietly and fearlessly about the city, into tho Capitol, up to the White House, and especially wherey.er tbere is a convention offering the last possible opportunity to put in a word in favor of the oppressed sex. A friend has given me a bitofber personal history,, and, .whilja stoutly resisting the suggestion, '{tat she is a monomaniac, says she is committed from conviction to the doctrine that her dress the most becoming, convenient andhealthful for her sex, and to that she is bourfd to cling with a woman's tenacity of purpose,
She was a surgeon in the Union hospitalsduring tbe war, and was captured by the rebels and thrown into Libby Prison, where ehe says repeated efforts were made to assassinate her, by poisoning ber food, and by shots fired by.the guard £rom.i tbe room below'her, at places where she was known to havo been standing & moment before. Tbe rebels demanded a Brigadier General in exchange for her, and this do mand led to her long detention in^Lbby Prison. She is a grass widow, having^ieen once incompatibly married. The local papers give curreacy t£«jHKtenieat that she has repeatedly^applied at the White House for an interview with President Grant, but has uniformly met with a re pulse, her card beings quietly dropped into the waste basket, and she compelled to retire without the coveted interview. After numerous rebuffs, she is Said to have sent a note to the President, inquiring when she could see. bim, and received for, answer "Not until sha came dressed in tbe conventional garb of her sex." ,'As her dress has become her idol, it seems probable tbat this reply amounts to an ex elusion from the Executive presence.— Wnsh. ffiom the LaFayette Journal.] Can effrontery go farther tban the lowing language of tho Indianapolis Setlf tinel "Tbe Democratic members are willing that any necessary legislation ifeall be nacted at the extra session."
Again: '-'Let the radical members give assurance that this pledge Shall te faithfully' adhered to, then all difficulty about appropriations and other necessary and legitimate legislation will cease."
The pledge referred to is an alleged promise that the ratification of the IStfe amendment shall not be taken up.
The Madison Free Press, another modest sprig of Democracy, says "If the radioal members desire legi'Mafslation tbey know tbe condition. Tbe Democratic members will -reflect the wishes of their constituents and what they believe to be tbe will of a large majority of the people of tbat State.—' Now, we ask, what will tbe radicals d6 about it? Detachments of the regiment have
been, at times, on short rations, and forced to eat their mules. The main body rendezvoused at Fort Dodge, and will be speedily mustered out, though it is probable many of th force may continue in the service in an individual capacity.
Capt. Payne reports that Mrs. Morgan and Miss White, the former of whom was captured by the Sioux and traded to the Cheyennes, and the latter, who was taken by the Cheyennes about seven months, since, were rescued by the command and restored to their friends. Their captivity has been an unintermitting scene of' cruelty, torture and degradation. Both of the unfortunate women are pregnant, having been compelled by torture to submit to the brutality of their captors. Mrs. Morgan, who was a bride of a month when captured, expresses a hope, however, that her offspring may be white, and not of that fiendish race that glories in the murder-of women and children. They were compelled to do the drudgery of the lodge, to bring the wood, herd the ponies, &c. Twenty-five back loads of wood, which had to be brought from a long distance, was the daily task of each. They were scarcely clothed at all and were suffering from the intense cold.
They attempted to warm their hands at the fire, when the Indians would seize them, and hold their hands over the flames until they were blistered.
The recital of the many brutallties to which these poor women were subjected should, inspire every one with a desire for the condign punishment of the savages and nothing less than death is at all appropriate or adequate to their deserts.
The rescue was effected by threats to hang three Cheyenne chiefs, who were prisoners in our camp. The savages resorted to subterfuges to delay in the matter, but when Custar [sic] ordered the chiefs hung forthwith, and had the ropes adjusted for that purpose, the women were brought immediately. Their only clothing consisted of an old flour sack each, tied around their waists, and, as will be imagined, they were in most pitiful and suffering condition. General Custar [sic] is on the Wachita and contemplates a vigorous campaign, but we cannot expect a tithe from the regulars that volunteers from the frontier accomplish.—<Leavenworth Bullelin [sic], April 1st.> =====

He has participated in every campaign for the last six years, and has a very credita-, ble passion for the extermination of the biood-thirsty red. devils.
