Miss Chaloner last August, having first put her under the influence of chloroform. A few weeks ago he promised to1 marry her to save hor from'disgrace, but subsequently refusod. Her father tben wozit. to a Justioa of tbe Feaco and instituted |u suit against Whittaker for rape. Tho girl was sent for, and her deposition was taken. While this was going on, the brother entered, and learned for tbe iir3t time of his sister's disgrace Ho imm«diately loft and armed himself with a revolver, and learning that-Ensign Whittaker was at the Skating Rink, wont there and fired a shot at him, saying at the same time, "you know what that was for." The first shot missed, and as the officer was making a rush toward him to seize the revolver, he fired agaia, the ball entering the temple. Cbalonsr was immediately arrested1, and now lies in jail. Naturally the nffiiir has caused great excitement, but tbe almost unanimous verdict is that the officer was served right. Kxtraordinary Trial.

An extraordinary triul for murder ai^d

arson has just bean concluded at Jfancji

Prance. Tbo accused, a young'man'of

nineteen, named Jeauson, was a pupit at the school for young men intended for the priesthood, kept at Pont-a-Mousson. Ho appears, however, to have been little qualified for a religious life. In May last ho was detected introducing a copy of Aristophanes Into the establishment and, fearing expulsion, determined .10 mark his departure by a signR! ajt of vengeance. Getting up at night, hp oollooted a hoap of books in tho schoolroom aad sot tire to thuui, and while tho pile was burning he broke opon tl-.o dest8 of the other pupils to tako whatever uioi:oy or valuables they contained,' and then wrolo on tho wail such iiircriptioua .its ."Down with the Priests!" How sweeps vengaancfcl" "I am beginning what others will complete!'' Joanson appears to have been muoh attached to another youth named Jouatte, and on reflocting that after the unpardontiblo act ha had just committed he could not escape expulsion, ho resolved to murder his friend rathe'r than be separated from him. He accordingly went buck to the dormitory, and there in cold blood cut the tluroat of tbo other lad. Tho defense put forward wai in«anlty, although no aats of the previous

As soon as the in. telligence spread abroad, the citizens turned out to arrest tho perpetrators, one of whom they secured, but the rest had fled. Yesterday morning, another one, named J. McEvernu, who had been traced to this city, was arrested by policeman Duvall and Stevens, at the home of his brother-in-law, on Bright street.— He was sent down to Taylorsville. The leader of the gang is said to be a school teacher, named L. Schooler, v»do has hitherto stood very high. Some weeks since, tbe people ot Taylorsville requested him to take the school there, but ho refused, giving as a reason, that tho old teacher had a family, and ho did not wiph to supplant him. With all his gonerogi" ty, he teems to have been us great a villian as ever went unhung.
