A Good Custom.—We read in one of our exchanges that at a recent wedding

in South Carolina, a young lawyer moved that one man iit the company should

be selected as President] that this Presi-

secret all the communications that should be forwarded to him in lii3 official

department that night, that each usmar,

ried gentleman and lady should write his or bor name on a piece of paper, and un

der it place tbe name of the person they

wished to marry, then hand it to the President for inspection, and if any lady

and gertleman had reciprocately chosen each other, the President was to inform

each ot the result, and thoso who had not been reciprocal in their choice were to be

kept entiroly secret. After the appoint

ment of the President, communications were accordingly handed up to the chair,

!and it was found that twelve young ladies and gentlemen had reciprocal choices, and eleven of the twelve matches

were solemnized.

Now, this is what we call a decidedly excellent custom, «nd we bavo no doubt

The n^edicjnes manufactured by tbe late W. F. Deckerman, tbe old Hungarian Veterinary Surgeon, are regarded here as tbe best for hordes, mules, and cattle ever introduced in this market. The Blood Condition Powers sell almost to tbe exclusion of all other like preparations so great their popularity here. Tbe Universal Ointment &nd the King of Oil Liniment, prepared by the Doctor, are very superior for use on both map beast.

The Ointment is considered an effectual remedy for the Piles when applied according to directions, and the Liniment is considered equally certain in the cure of Rheumatism. They are said to be most excellent for use on stock. Every farmer should bay# a supply of these

DECLINED.

iitr. Stewart has declined the appoint* montof Secretary of the Treasury, and the President has accepted his declination.

It may be stated that from the very beginning toe President and Mr. Stewart were in daily intercourse, consulting the means by which the latter could free himself from the disability of the law.

It is said not a legal geptleman who has been spqken to upon tbe subject expressed an opinion that there would be a violation of the act in Mr. Stewart's accepting the office after paying made the transfer, but that many others thought it might be considered disadvantageous to have the spirit of the law in the slightest degree invaded. This view eminently controlled Mr. Stewart, and in order to remove all objections he declined the appointment,

Sinoe there have been doubts about Stewart's taking possession of the Treasury Department, telegrams from leading merchants have been received, urging bim in the strongest terms to make any sacrifice, even to abandoning $t once all interest in his business, tojefa\n the ofHce, and "a'dvising ilta under no circumstances to decline. Some of the leading members of tho two Houses expressed similar views.

At the lowest estimate, by the means Stewart proposed, $6,000,000 would have been given to charities in New York within the four years of his official term.

Mr. Stewart will return to New York to-morrow.
