MaTBIMonia.1 In publishing mar iiage notices, it is the custom to some times heighten the interest of the simple fact by appending a bit of poetry, or th atterancb of joyous emotions incident to go pleasing an occasion. These appendages are usually written by the editor, and-are induced by presentations of por* lions of the wedding feast, a small fee, or from personal friendship. Another fea

of the appendage of."no cards," tosubstitute toma moral axiom that is consonant witb (he interesting nature of a wedding. This reform has been initiated iQ Cincinnati, in whose journals we read that Robert J. Thompson was united in wedloek witb 'Miss Mary A. Oakley. To this statement the parties append a declaration of what we doubt not is one of the profoundest ioonvietions of both their hearts, to the effect that 'Tis not well to be alone."— •To wblch every person of experience, and *«till more perhaps those of no experience »t all, will heartily cry, Amen! We trust that the custom thus introduced will iba generally adopted. It will add to the 'abarm of an attractive department of the 'newspapers and it will afford an excellent means of impressing true opinions ahd lovely sentiments upon the most suseeptible portion of the community.

Gbowlebs.—There

is a class of men

(and women, too',) in evtfrj 'community, not even excepting the Prairie City, who go about with vinegar faces, growling because somebody feels above them, or because they are not appreciate^ as they think they should be, and who have a constant quarrel with their destiny. These persons have usually made a grave mistake in their estimate of their abilities, or are unmitigated donkeys. In either, case thev are unfortunate. AVherever^ this fault-finding with one's condition occurs, there is always a want of self-re-spect. If people dislike you, don't tell it' all over town. If you are capable, show it. If you area light down olever indi* vidual, wash tho wormwood off your face, and show your good will by jour dtjeds.' Then, if people feel above j#u, go right away and feel above them. If they swell when they pas# you in th8 stroet, swell ywiraelf and if this does not "fetch" them, conclude very good naturedly that they are unworthy of your acquaintance, and' pitv them for missing such a capital chftnce to get into good sof clety. It is the only way to enjoy your own self-respect and be at peace with all, and the only way, also, to make the world large enough to contain all. Try it.

ICEMEN were busily engaged yesterday cutting ice at the Big Pond north of the city. The sudden freeze makes it of splendid quality, although only three or four inches thick. This is quite thin for packing but the possibility of another freeze cannot counted on, and the dealers are making the most of the present crop to remedy the mistake made in allowing the first freeze to go by. There was plenty of ice then, but the dealers thought to make a "better thing" by waiting for a thicker sheet, which would pack double as much with the same cutting, and keep with less loss than the thin sheet. They missed it. A few, however, acting on the sensible maxim, that "the only time to do anything is <now>," filled

A SIK0QLAR discovery h»ia just been made at Cincinnati, that may be useful to our farmers. Il scams that a man upset his kerosene lantern into his meal bio, and he noticed afierward that bia hogs ate the damaged fodder with nviility.— This gave him au idea, and by experiment he found that £ve weeks feuaing \vith the kerosene mixture mado one of his hogs so fat that It could scarcely stand.
