The applicants, some eight or ten, were promptly on hand with. their ieveral propositions, and were not a little surprised, as doubtless will be our readers, to learn that the Board had chosen one of their own number, Dr. Daniol HoilingBWorth, as Superintendent. This action of the Board receives the severe condemnation of men of both political parties—.the Bepublicans condemning •3 a high handed outrage, and the Dei ocrats, because it will injure the partyi Dr. Hollingswbrtb is to be paid twelve hundred dollars a year, while good and responsible men offered to take the position at eight hundred dollars. FIRE I—About eleven.'o'clock Saturday night, thq Sarly block, corner of Main and Second streets was difcovered filled with smoke. The alarm was given, and tho engines were promptly on hand, but fully ten minutes elapsed before tho fire was discoveied. It originated at No. 61, the lower floor of which is occupied by Adams & Stewart as a grocery stor^ and the second story by L. Forster & Son, as a furniture wareroom. The engines were good working order, and tbe fire was squelched in throe minutes after the first water was put on. $1,000 will cover the loss of Forster & Son and of Adams ft Stewart, fully covered by insurance. YOUTHJTUL DEPRAVITY!—On Saturday a young lad who has been in jail some ten days on a charge of larceny sent word to Mayor Cookerly that if he would allow him to come to his office he would make a voluntary confession not only of bis own guilt, but of number of thieVings and robberies that have been committed in tbe city during a few weeks past. He was brought-out of jail, and on bis statement, four boys, John Ryan,
Chester Sherburne, Stephen Roach and Jerome Hayes, were arrested Saturday evening and taken before tbe Mayor, charged with breaking into Barllett & Grundy's peddling wagon, and stealing therefrom a lot of goods, some three weeks since. Some of these goods, consisting of hair combs, suspender?, spectacles, and other notions, were recovered by the offioers. THE ISTHMUS CANAL.
The treaty made by General Cushing with the government of Colombia concedes to the United Stater exclusive right to construct an inter-ocean canal across the Isthmus of Darien at any point which may be selected by the United States.
The Colombian government cedes six miles of land each side of the canal, onehalf for its own benefit, and the other for that of the party undertaking the construction of the work.
The canal is to be under the control of the United States, who will fix tolls, and is to be free to all nations in time of peace.
